You have the details a bit wrong. The subjects were not deliberately infected wit syphilis, but they were chosen from persons diagnosed with it. And there WERE specific treatments for it at that time -- not as good as were developed later, but certainly useful and the medical standard for care of the disease at that time. But they were not given such specific treatment, and not told specifically that they had syphilis. This was done so the course of the disease in the absence of treatment could be studied in humans.

Actually they were not told they were being studied at all.
Avatar 12:45pm

Thans for the clarification Robert. I'd thought some subjects were healthy and doing it for the pittance they were paying. Maybe my source was wrong.
  12:46pm
Listener Robert:

I know it well because now medical experimenters are taught it as an example of what NOT to do.
Avatar 12:48pm
Wolfgang:

No, they were not told they were bing studied, but the people living in the area were lied to and told that there was a study about "blood ailments."
  12:48pm
Listener Robert:

Since they weren't told they were being studied, they weren't paid. The pretense was just that this was a clinic where they were being taken care of.

Mike Finnegan is an acquaintance. Mike plays i a band in L.A. with a friend of mine Bill Lynchm that used to date Bonnie. Bill's from Lawrence, KS. Mike went to college there, where he played basketball for KU before relocating to Wichita and founding The Serfs (produced by Tom Wilson). My wife once went to see Bill play in Lawrence when I was away. Bonnie was there and joined the band on stage. Mi esposa still has the $1 bill she had Bonnie sign. My wife worships Bonnie...and Mike still plays in her touring band.

I hope we hear Too Long At The Fair today.

Mike's son is Kelly. Kelly's a solo artist as well as the leader of Monophonics. Kelly sings just about like his dad...though his voice isn't as big. Mike has pipes you can drive a truck through. Age is catching him up, but in his prime he could sing as well or better than anyone he played behind.
