What a venerable group of radio comrades we have assembled this evening. Welcome, NGH, Coel, String, Chresti, and ParUbi!

Right you are about the title of the program, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

Nikhil Banerjee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Probably the Indian classic musician whose work I have listened to most.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

Most excellent musician!

Also, in pre-medieval Hindi culture, there was a horse sacrofice, based on the Bhagavad Vita, where a white horse was allowed to wander around, and wherever it went, the monarch would claim the land it went as its own. said horse would then be sacrificed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Sam Segal:

Kind of a bummer for said horse!

I was hoping for dawn ragas....(or at least ragga ragas)....

Dean:

Ooooh, Nikhil Banerjee, one of my favorites. Was that from the Raga Records series?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Sam Segal:

If I play all the tunes I've selected in their entirety, we may have to switch to dawn ragas at the end.
Avatar 10:32pm
northguineahills:

oh, in the horse sacrifice, it was allowed to wander for one year. The monarch would have messangers follow it and put stakes to show where it went.....

I'm good until dawn....

Sam Segal:

Howdy, Dean! I believe that Nikhil Banerjee recording was released on CD
on a label called Chhanda Dhara.
  10:33pm
Dean:

My Banerjee story involves my having read a highly favorable review during the '90s of a double live album from an Amsterdam club. For years I sought the record, but couldn't find it. Finally, I was in "Little India" near Cerritos and Artesia, California, and I walked into a shop with CDs. I asked about the record, and the clerk got up, walked to the bins, and grabbed the record. Later, I went to the lamented Bodhi Tree in West LA, where I acquired maybe a dozen of his records.

Excellent sounds!

I voted earlier tonight in southern Brooklyn and was surprised to find NO LINE. Apparently early voting sites are less busy near closing time (and it probably helps that it's a weekday).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks for the tip on that one, Dean. I always need more Banerjee in my life. Haven't heard that one. I was first introduced to his music through a radio program on the London-based internet radio station NTS hosted by DJ Nabihah Iqbal.

Welcome, Ike! Congrats on getting the early vote in. I still need to get to my early voting site after work sometime this week. Thanks for the reminder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
ParUbi:

I once wrote Gaurang Yodh an email-- he was a physics professor who played sitar, and I found some of his music on vinyl. He recommended (as in the same vein):
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
ParUbi:

Ustad Vilayatkhan
Ustan Hidayat Khan ( Vilayat Khan's younger son)
Ustad Shaheez Parvez
Ustad Rais Khan ( my teacher's son)
Pandit Ravi Shankar
  10:43pm
Dean:

My introduction was that review. Coincidentally, now that I've lived for nearly 20 years in Berkeley, he was a frequent visitor to these parts. Banerjee is typically more introspective (to my ear) than Shankar, but that Shree Rag is 80 minutes of show-stopper virtuosity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Sam Segal:

Got two from the list in this set! Thanks for the recommendations, ParUbi. Will need to look into some names I don't recognize.

Cripies Ike, if I didn't have to work so late (just finished) I would have gone to vote tonight. All years past I've usually voted after 7pm and no crowd. Went Sunday and the line was half a block long at 11am so I didn't wait.

This Ali Akbar Khan is familiar, indeed.

Occidental College in Eagle Rock, NW of LA (where Obama attended for a year or so), used to (maybe still does) have a music series featuring the very best classical Indian performers, including AAK.

And all New Yorkers, if you're voting Biden, please do so on the progressive *Working Families Party* line. NY's weird fusion voting system means you can vote for someone on any line where they appear and it'll count just as much, and Quid Pro Cuomo is trying to kill WFP by raising the minimum votes for them to keep their ballot line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

Is it far from you, Chresti? Looks like its located in Cambria, CA.

Dean, It was called The Music Circle. I saw so many fantastic shows there. Ravi Shankar for one.

Cambria is, give or take, halfway between LA and SF.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm

Excited to tune into the Ragas Live festival on WKCR. The Indian Classical show on WKCR on Sunday nights, which I think is associated with Brooklyn Raga Massive somehow, was an inspiration for tonight's program.

I saw Ali Akbar Khan with Zakir Hussain outside at Stearns Grove, a big stand of redwoods in San Francisco, out in the Avenues on a very hot afternoon.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm

are any of you californians familiar with a spot called, i think, china grove, near palo alto?
  11:25pm
Dean:

I attended an India festival in Long Beach. Lakshmi Shankar played. Anyway, I was in jeans and t-shirt, and many of the females in attendance were in saris. I sat next to one who leaned over during the performances to whisper to me, "You're the most comfortable person here."

I think there are more than one Pirate´s Cove.
  11:34pm
Dean:

I have no doubt that she was making an objective remark, WR. Besides, this took place in a huge metropolitan convention center where there was no high standard for proper dress. She was, in other words, complaining about being committed to her sari.
