Coel, Doc, TDK, and Chresti! Welcome! Let's see if we can cultivate enough spiritual momentum to carry us through the next 24-36 hours!

Is that Mt. Hood in the photo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
coelacanth∅:

anybody here into Phillip K Dick offer me a recommended starting point?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Sam Segal:

I don't think so, Chresti. All I know is that this photo was taken somewhere in Colorado around 1972.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Sam Segal:

@Coel, I am not a PKD expert by any means, but I really enjoyed his book "Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said." It felt pretty accessible, but still weird and druggy like you would hope for from him.

TDK60:

I was thinkin' Mt. Hood would probably have more evergreen trees around it.

Sam i have a friendly acquaintance recommended the author and a starting point book but i don't remember what he said.
it wasn't that; but i'll consider it.

"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" could be a good one too, Coel.

that's it! Thank you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Sam Segal:

I believe Blade Runner is based on that book. I haven't actually read it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
coelacanth∅:

...actually i'm not sure! maybe that one was mentioned because of the blade runner connection so it stands out in my mind.
hmmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm

Sleep well, TDK60.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

i never saw blade runner either, but the idea that an actionadventure movie was based on this book makes me apprehensive

Glad you dug it, Doc! One of my absolute favorite Art Ensemble recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Sam Segal:

For what its worth, Coel, I think Blade Runner is a pretty loose adaptation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
coelacanth∅:

thanks Sam i just read plot descriptions and it still looks good. probably more serious than what i prefer but maybe there's humor in it too?
anyway i'm ordering Vonnegut and Tom Robbins short stories collections so i can always take breaks from a serious book if i need to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Sam Segal:

I could use some Tom Robbins in my life. Loved "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" when I read it many years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
coelacanth∅:

Sam that was the first Tom Robbins book i read as well and i loved it. then i read jitterbug perfume and i was really glad i'd read cowgirls first. jitterbug is pure Genius! and as good as cowgirls is, it might've disappointed me if i'd read it after.
-then i read 4 others and immensely enjoyed all but one; and even that one i loved... villa incognito is his last novel (? - hopefully not) and the story is his usual Brilliant, but at a certain point when it seemed like it should've gone into yet more weird twists- it just wrapped up. so not like him. also there are many loose ends; things never clarified. also not like him. (it's also much shorter than his others) even so it was very powerful and aspects of it stick with me to this day.
i have 2 more of his novels to read... i'm ordering a short stories book that i doubt the library will have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
coelacanth∅:

jeez
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Sam Segal:

Ah I'll have to check out Jitterbug Perfume. Thanks for the rec, Coel.
