Good morning Bob and all listeners.

Good morning and happy Halloween, Bob and BRAAAAINS.
Avatar 9:04am TDK60:

Good morning, Bob.
  9:05am Pete T:

Mike Gibbins was kind of an underrated drummer, huh?
  9:06am Joe Merklee:

Morning all! Those two albums Badfinger put out on Warner Bothers are superb!
Avatar 9:08am YETI BOB:

This sort of desert-blues guitar sound is getting to be a thing in rock - I'm thinking 75 Dollar Bill, Horse Lords, and the beginning of this Gizzard King song - I like the sound.
Avatar 9:08am Bob Brainen:

And good morning to you, 1whoknewcthulhu & YETI BOB. Thanks Andrew! Welcome Duke, melinda and Really Lisa. Yeah I dig having shows back to back w/ Jeff and Mike. Even better when I get to see them, but we do what we have to do to stay safe. Hope you do the same!
Hey Doc Rock, adamDIEsit & TDK60. Hey Pete T. agree totally about Mike G's drumming. The fill in Baby Blue always kills me! Solid, baby.

King Gizzard aw hell yeah! Getting me awake and pumped. Good morning from Seattle. Ten mile run through Ballard, Fremont, Wallingford and the U District. Bob Brainen spins the soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am James in ATL:

Great start! So happy to have you back on the air, Bob!
Avatar 9:10am YETI BOB:

I've actually avoided listening to KG&TLW because the name sounds like some Jim Morrison nonsense. But that track was hot, I am forced to re-evaluate. (Thanks WFMU!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:10am WilliamfromDumont:

Morning Bob and others.
Avatar 9:11am TDK60:

Yeti, King G. did an album with guitars tuned microtonally.
Avatar 9:11am YETI BOB:

@TDK60: Yeah and again I refused to listen to it because it was called "Flying Microtonal Banana" which I thought was dumb :)
Avatar 9:13am TDK60:

I think they might have a goofiness about them.
Avatar 9:13am YETI BOB:

@Bob Brainen: I'm sure that by now you've heard Ken's vocal rendition of your opening tune - right? He really nailed it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:14am WilliamfromDumont:

The hippest McLaughlin album.
Avatar 9:16am BadBob:

I keep hearing about these ken renditions of theme songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am fred:

It's great to hear this show again. I'd rather be somewhere else though, but it's as good a second choice as can be
Avatar 9:17am YETI BOB:

@TDK60: Yeah - clearly they are an amazing band, I know they are hard-working and prolific, but the goofiness initially turned me off a bit. Like I said, time for me to give these goofs another chance!
Avatar 9:17am Bob Brainen:

Hey Joe M. "desert blues sound" I like that. Gotta checkout those bands you mention! King Gizz actually added frets to some of their guitars to make them microtonal, also they did it to keyboards and harmonicas! Crazy.
Hey SmokinJ, James in ATL hey WilliamfromDumont & TDK60. Yeah, sort of agree on the name and such, but they have their own thing going, for sure. LOTS of stuff on Youtube. Thanks to Pete T. for turning me onto them! I took the deep dive. Def. a goofiness, sort of endearing...sort of...goofy! YETI, I have heard Ken's epic version
Avatar 9:19am TDK60:

Not everyone need be Diamanda Galas or Scott Walker. Hee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Uncle Michael:

Good morning, everyone.
  9:20am Dennis Diken:

good morning Bob & all! Marvelettes rule!!! Happy Hallowe’en!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Marley P. Dogg:

Good morning Bobs and friends! Happy weekend!
Avatar 9:25am YETI BOB:

@BobBrainen: By "Desert blues" I was referring to Tinarawen and Mdou Moctar, etc. In fact Horse Lords & 75 Dollar Bill also have refretted instruments, inspired by Mauritanian music. Horse Lords were the first band I knew of who did that (their guitarist traveled to Mauritania to study), but it's becoming more of a thing. $75Bill's "I Was Real" is one my favorite records of 2019. (Album of the year in WIRE magazine IIRC)

And regarding goofy names, as "YETI BOB" I really shouldn't try to pass judgement on others :)
Avatar 9:25am Bob Brainen:

Hey Uncle Michael, how you doin? Hey Dennis, que pasa? Marvelettes really were great. They never changed to the "name of singer" & The Marvelettes" thing, like most Motown Gal bands, did they!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am StringOFperils:

Good morning, and thanks for playing Everybody Loves a Train. Colossal song.
Avatar 9:28am TDK60:

Opinion: Los Lobos is one of the top rock bands in this here nation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am StringOFperils:

Ill see your nation and up you one world. One of the best bands in this here world.
Avatar 9:29am YETI BOB:

@BobB: If they had, it would have been "Gladys and the Marvelettes" prior to 1965, and "Wanda and the Marvelettes" after that.
  9:30am Krypt PX:

Good Halloween Morning to you Bob The 🧠+En !. suggestion, go by the Halloween moniker - BOB the BRAIN ; just for today, or not. No big deal if you don't go for it.
  9:30am Dennis Diken:

No Bob, they didn’t do that star name thing, never liked when D Ross was added to The Supremes “brand”. Marvelettes made some of the best Motown records, in my book. Speaking of books, there’s one on The Marvelettes, enjoyed it.
Avatar 9:33am YETI BOB:

@BadBob: Check the archives from Ken's show on 10/28. I haven't laughed so hard in weeks.
Avatar 9:35am TDK60:

Yeti, do you know where in Ken's show he sang WFMU theme songs? I don't see where it is on the playlist.
Avatar 9:36am YETI BOB:

it's right before Wing, you can't click on it directly
  9:36am Andrew In Toronto:

Thanks for the reading tip, Dennis.
Avatar 9:37am YETI BOB:

We sing this song every time we go shopping for cat food. Again!
  9:38am Joe Merklee:

Thanks for Cat Food! I was at a session earlier this year and the piano player asked me what I was looking for and I said,"Keith Tippet on Cat Food".
Avatar 9:38am Bob Brainen:

Hey StringOFperils, if that is a play on words, it's a good one. Hey Krypt PX, I was "Bob The Brain" as a kid, taken from "Benny The Brain" from Top Cat!
I gotta check that book out, Dennis. I'm reading a book on The Association right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Rich in Bay Ridge:

Good morning. Bob - you have to watch Fripp and Toyah’s Sunday Lunch videos on YouTube. Fun fun fun.
Avatar 9:39am YETI BOB:

@TDK: Click on F8TLSTK and listen through that track ... then you'll get to Ken's vocal medley. (And I second the Toyah and Fripp recommendation.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Uncle Michael:

I'm doing well, Bob. Thanks for asking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Uncle Michael:

Dennis, wasn't there a Marvelette Barry wanted to date?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:41am WilliamfromDumont:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Chop Scott:

Avatar 9:43am Bob Brainen:

Hey Rich in Bay Ridge, I have seen some. That someone like Frippy can find a mate gives hope to the lovelorn.
Yeah William, kind of clunkily written, but some fun facts to be gleaned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am DjLorraine:

Good morning Bob and all
  9:46am dano59:

This Weekend song is freakin’ luvverly. Erotic even.
Not the biggest fan of sax but it has its place.
  9:47am Mickey Gentry:

I beg to differ about hanging out with Robert Fripp. in the late 70s I was in the punk scene in Pittsburgh PA and Fripp was touring with tape loops at record stores. Someone asked him to come to one of the shows that night and he did come and he was very cool. At the time I asked him what he thought of everything at the show and he said it's great but can they dance? Which made everybody get up and dance. a great night and a great memory of him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Rich in Bay Ridge:

I met Fripp at a signing at Tower Records in 1992, and about 12 fans showed up. He was a real charmer, funny, and engaged with his fans. I was really surprised. He was also very interested in the current Mr Big CD.
Avatar 9:48am YETI BOB:

Nice piece on Keith and Julie Tippet in the Aug 2019 WIRE magazine (with Oren Ambarchi on the cover). Digging that out now to re-read.
  9:49am Dennis Diken:

Indeed, Andrew; not sure Uncle Mike, I forget? Marvelettes were 1st Motown girl group success, right? Book on Mary Wells also good, 1st Motown superstar, kinda shunned (prob cause she had the stones to leave the label in ‘64). deets on Association book pls Bob!
Avatar 9:50am YETI BOB:

@MickeyG: I love that story! I'm sure he has a great sense of humor, even though he's dry as hell.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:53am WilliamfromDumont:

I recently rediscovered how good the self-titled Association lp from '69 is.
Avatar 9:56am TDK60:

Just checked the Ken theme song segment. I'm heartened that WFMU is not run by a person in their right mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Uncle Michael:

Ken theme song segment? (he asked)
Avatar 9:58am Bob Brainen:

Thanks Chop Scott! Hey DjLorraine! dano59 glad you dig.
Interesting to hear those positive Fripp stories. I'm referring to accounts of him being no fun to be around as a band member and also some things he did with reissues that bug the hell out of me.
Den, book by Russ Giguerre, not a really well-written book, but some cool info. to be gleaned. Gonna play some next show.
Wm. that "Stonehenge" lp has some great stuff. Def. a lesser known lp. Past the hits, sort of. And a great album cover inside and out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am adamDIESit:

Waltz/not waltz?
  9:59am Cooh John:

Saturday's are back to normal with Bob back. Good morning DjLorraine.
Avatar 9:59am YETI BOB:

@Uncle Michael: I really don't want to lead people away from this great show that's happening now, but the segment on Wednesday was just epic, and he sings the opening theme to this very show. 10/28, right between F8TLSTK and Wing. (You can't click on it directly)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Ken From Hyde Park:

RIP Agent 007 Sean Connery, age 90. ⚰️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Uncle Michael:

Thanks, YB.
Avatar 10:04am YETI BOB:

Fun Fact - Keith Tippett was born Keith Tippetts, but he dropped the the final S because "Keith Tippetts's Sextet" was impossible to pronounce.
  10:05am Krypt PX:

Upgrading my suggestion from 9:30, better yet, "Bob's Brain".
Avatar 10:07am YETI BOB:

@BobBrainen: The vocal mic is a bit low - turned up the volume to hear you talk, then this NRBQ came in really loud!

We did lose Gordon Haskell-yet another Crimso bassist to pass on. He was not treated very well by Fripp-that's what I was referring to.
dano59, like I said it took me a couple listens then it made sense. Like. I'm impressed they even knew the song. I didn't!
