I'm going to try to guess what random country we are visiting today (*runs randomizer program*) - Is it "Saint Kitts and Nevis" ?

Heya David and winners. Digging the Gypsy Jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm

I can neither confirm nor deny that guess, Yeti Bob. It is a great guess, in any case.

I didn't mean to imply proximity.
Avatar 🚂 12:07pm
YETI BOB:

:) I didn't even know "St Kitts and Nevis" was a country. Just having a little fun, don't want to spoil anything!
Avatar 🚂 12:07pm

We're having pizza tonight. Surprised I could wait 24 hours, after all the pizza talk yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
David Dichelle:

I don't mean to discourage guessing, just won't give it away too soon ;)
Avatar 🚂 12:09pm
Carmichael:

Or it could be a region, like Roma or Basque country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
David Dichelle:

I'm using the full list of countries and territories with Internet suffixes. Well minus uninhabited rocks and the like.
🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
WR:

Now with the pizza talk again?!?! I had nearly forgot and now I'm jonesing for some. Only a barely decent pizza available within reach for me. Hmmmm. May have to venture out later today.

Hey WR - what's all this about pizza?

Uninhabited rocks have an internet suffix?

RE: pizza, ask Carmichael, he restarted it.

The ISO 3166-1 database does not include Basque or Roma territories (too bad)

St. Kitts got hit hard by one of the hurricanes (I lost track), that blasted through that region a few years ago.

speaking of Vanuatu - my wife was working in Vanuatu off and on for the past couple years. She says it and the people there are beautiful. Very unique place on the planet it seams.
Avatar 12:26pm
TDK60:

Th suffix for Antarctica is AQ.
Avatar 🚂 12:26pm
YETI BOB:

@WR: For example .bv is reserved for the (uninhabited) Bouvet Island. But .bv is not open for registration. So it's sort of like an uninhabited rock of a domain... en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
David Dichelle:

Hey Doug, it does sound like a beautiful place.
Avatar 🚂 12:29pm
YETI BOB:

@WR: Don't ask how I know this. Clearly I have way too much time on my hands.
Avatar 12:30pm

Switzerland is CH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm

You are absolutely correct, Yeti Bob, that is one of the places I had to remove from the list.
Avatar 🚂 12:31pm
YETI BOB:

@TDK: Yup, from "Confoederatio Helvetica"
Avatar 12:32pm
TDK60:

ah Yeti, makes sense. How'd ya find the time to know that?

@TDK: I've spent a good bit of time in Switzerland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm

YB: Which part of CH?
Avatar 🚂 12:35pm
YETI BOB:

I was working at CERN, so mostly the Geneva region. But I've also traveled to Zürich and Basel.
🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
WR:

Bouvet Island, natively know as "Bouvetøya", one of three "dependencies " claimed by Norway near Antarctica. Ok, I'm supposed to be working. Back to listening.

PS; I had forgotten about Silly Wizard, never acquiredany of their recordings though know them well through a long ago roommate being a fan. First pizza and now Silly Wizard. Too many distractions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm

Ah, interesting, I spent a year in Geneva as well, knew a few people from CERN.

Hey there Cmurtha!
Avatar 🚂 12:40pm

@DD: US citizens can't get permanent jobs at CERN because of how it's funded. So I could only be a "visiting worker". If I could have gotten a permanent job I probably would have emigrated.

It's an odd situation - a friend of mine who I saw last week is now in the hospital with a 103 degree fever. And I'm feeling sick so I assumed he had COVID and passed it to me. But he just got a negative test result, so I don't know what's going on.

What are these "parking cops," of whom you speak? I do not know them.
Avatar 🚂 1:17pm
YETI BOB:

@Carmichael: All their records are good, but "Masana Temples" (the most recent one) is a standout - I play that record A LOT.
Avatar 1:18pm
TDK60:

Brian, Handy's making lunch. NYC has traffic ticket cops, a separate part of the police. Some activists are trying to take that duty away from the NYPD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
David Dichelle:

Thanks for the recommendation, YB!
Avatar 🚂 1:19pm
βrian:

What would happen if there were no such parking cops, practically speaking?
Avatar 1:21pm
TDK60:

Society would fall apart fast Brian, of course. (In NYC many South Asians have jobs as ticketkops.)
Avatar 1:23pm
TDK60:

..as far as I know, the NYC ticket cops are unarmed.
Avatar 🚂 1:26pm
βrian:

In Madison, parking patrols occur only in certain zones. We're pretty close to downtown but haven't seen them, even though there's a city-wide reg prohibiting parking for more than 48 hours on a given street.
Avatar 🚂 1:26pm
YETI BOB:

@βrian: I think it's a revenue thing, the city makes money from issuing tickets.
Avatar 🚂 1:27pm
YETI BOB:

NYC seems like a difficult place to have a car. When I lived there I didn't own one. Here in Chicago the parking rules are a little less Byzantine - none of that "alternate side" stuff. Just street cleaning & snow removal.
Avatar 1:28pm
TDK60:

Yeah Yeti. I'm in NYC and want no car here.
Avatar 🚂 1:28pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
David Dichelle:

Poor lost owl: You knew they were out there somewhere.
Avatar 🚂 1:32pm
YETI BOB:

No, it would never fly in NYC. Dibs is a very Chicago thing. Here's some great pics - note you don't have to use lawn-chairs, you could use, say, vacuum cleaners, or statues of Jesus and Mary - www.thrillist.com...
Avatar 🚂 1:32pm
YETI BOB:

Also we do great things like U-turn into a parking space on the other side of the street, that I don't think you'd get away with in NYC.
Avatar 🚂 1:33pm
βrian:

Enforcement for declared snow emergencies is much more aggressive. They've realized that if they can't plow curb-to-curb, chaos will likely ensue.

Something told me that he didn't come to Rammstein mainly through Ken's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm

Fun fact: Till Lindemann of Rammstein is originally from Leipzig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm

Or maybe not that fun after all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
fred:

If there's a Yiddish Rammstein, is there a Yiddish Laibach?
Avatar 🚂 1:51pm

Maybe one day, Fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm

Back to the parking cops: TDK60, yes, they are unarmed. Their attitude really seems to be that they don't *want* to give out tickets -- they know it's a racket -- but they will if you are parked on the wrong side of the street during ASP rules. But unlike most cops, they actually know the law and the differences among parking, standing, and stopping. So if someone is sitting in the driver's seat, that car is standing, not parking, and so not ticketable. So it becomes like a mini-block-party these days, with everyone out to wait until they see the cop and then hop in their cars.

Though my Bangladeshi neighbor was telling me he once got a ticket while sitting in his car even though no one else did. He took a picture and called the 311 about it, and that parking cop has never come back to the block.

Carmichael, i was going to mention to you that there is now a new Top-Lever domain of ".irish" -- i thought you might have an interest (when i discovered it last night) 🍀

So wait, have we been experiencing German Irish music? As played at Die Blarney Stone Pub [I'm sure I have the article wrong]. I mean, especially that Wacholder piece...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
spodiodi:

glad we both made it through that, Bas :) -- this was the second time i've had to repair the heater (the cord just wore out after several years. the thing is old as mud)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
David Dichelle:

Hey Jeff, funny you should say that. This (Und Nichts Nachher) was actually recorded at the Irish pub around the corner from me.

Jeff Moore:

Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
David Dichelle:

They are mostly traditional German songs, though.

Sounds tricky, spodi! I'm an electronics engineer, so blown fuses are my calling.

Just had my weekly project review meeting. I wanted to check in with my colleagues even though I'm sick. Fortunately, they said "Let's keep this short today".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
spodiodi:

coo, Bas.... do you know this joke:

A graduating engineering student: "Four years ago, I couldn't even spell "engineer". Today, I are one!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm

aloha Brian and Jeff

aloha, all 🚇
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
spodiodi:

the joke is that many engineering students don't have strong literary skills (and/or at least not English literary skills.) Was told to me by my friend's mother, on a rafting/camping trip, with a bunch of engineers

spodi, one kid I graduated HS with went to Rice to study engineering. He said he was going to and then actually DID go into class late in his last year wearing a striped hat to say that while all this math they were studying was interesting, he really wanted to know when they were going to start driving trains!
Avatar 🚂 2:38pm
Carmichael:

@Bas, that's the joke about higher education. one knows more and more about less and less, until you learn absolutely everything about absolutely nothing.

"Das Wattenmeer" is the Wadden Sea, in English. But I don't think "Wadden" is an English word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm

hahah, Handy -- another good one. I'm familiar with the "Choo-choo!" self-deprecating joke-reply to someone announcing that they are an engineer
