Only now they get phone calls saying, "Now that you've been promoted, you can serve on this committee... be a journal editor... become department chair...," i.e., new work added to your previous duties. Anyway, congratulations on your success!

Assistant Professors spend years dreaming of the luxury of having tenure and not constantly worrying about losing their jobs. Then they get tenure and... nothing has changed. Only now they get phone calls saying, "Now that you've been promoted, you can serve on this committee... be a journal editor... become department chair...," i.e., new work added to your previous duties. Anyway, congratulations on your success!

Our house has been a woodpecker pecking site, and we were told that scares them away (I used to review jazz for a small audiophile magazine, and got many CDs of "jazz-lite" I had no interest in that were useful now. Once during a staff meeting when somebody referred to him as "the boss," he responded, "I don't like to think of myself as a boss." It was genuine, not false humility at all.
