Chris Watson | Gobabeb | Touch: Isolation (V/A) | Touch | 2020 | Gobabeb Namib Research Institute sits in the heart of the hyperarid Namib Desert. It provides easy access to the three distinct ecosystems of the Namib, reflected in our logo: the Sand Sea to the south, the Gravel Plains to the north, and the riparian woodlands of the ephemeral Kuiseb River. These three ecosystems provide a rich diversity of arid-adapted organisms. The Namib biota includes a number of endemic taxa. Gobabeb also is situated on the ecotone between fog and rain precipitation, enhancing further Gobabeb's unique capacity for desert research. It is embedded in the indigenous cultural landscape of the ≠Aonin (Topnaar) Nama pastoralists that have inhabited the Kuiseb River for centuries.(gobabeb.org) | 0:00:00 (Pop-up)

Peter Cusack | Aral Sea Thunder - Camels, Skipping, Vital Rain, Village Life In The Storm | Aral Sea Stories and the River Naryn | Corvo | 2019 | The Aral Sea is situated in Central Asia, between the Southern part of Kazakhstan and Northern Uzbekistan. Up until the third quarter of the 20th century it was the world?s fourth largest saline lake, and contained 10grams of salt per liter. The two rivers that feed it are the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, respectively reaching the Sea through the South and the North. The Soviet government decided in the 1960s to divert those rivers so that they could irrigate the desert region surrounding the Sea in order to favor agriculture rather than supply the Aral Sea basin. The reason why we decided to explore the implications up to today of this human alteration of the environment is precisely that certain characteristics of the region, from its geography to its population growth, account for dramatic consequences since the canals have been dug. Those consequences range from unexpected climate feedbacks to public health issues, affecting the lives of millions of people in and out of the region. Clorinde | Hercules And Cacus | The Gardens Of Bomarzo | Etruscan | 2013 | 2nd full-length album by Italian brother duo Andrea & Simone Salvatici / About an hour and a half north of Rome, just shy of the city of Viterbo, is the town of Bomarzo, home of the Sacro Bosco (Sacred Woods), aka Parco dei Mostri (Park of the Monsters). These Mannerist gardens, filled with gigantic sculptures of monsters, animals (elephant, tortoise, whale), and other mythological creatures, were created in the 16th century then left mostly abandoned for 400 years until they were rediscovered in the early 20th century. Pier Francesco “Vicino” Orsini was the aristocratic patron behind this landscaped garden, work on which was begin in 1552 and finished some time before Orsini’s death in 1584. Pirro Ligorio (who worked on nearby Villa Lante, Villa d’Este, and Casino Pio at the Vatican) was the chief planner of Sacro Bosco. And while Simone Moschino was the primary sculptor of the strange statues here, which were hewn from the many rocky outcroppings in this part of Lazio, the vision for Sacro Bosco came from Orsini. Art historians and others have debated for years over whether the gardens were a whimsical response to the typically Mannerist Villa Lante in Bagnaia (a few kilometers from Bomarzo) or if the gardens devolved into some kind of sad, surrealist fantasy following the death of Orsini’s wife Giulia Farnese, who passed away in 1560. | 2:32:01 (Pop-up)

Will Ferrell | Happy Christmas, Hanukkah (Belated), Sunday, Family Celebration, Celebration of Life!! | Elf | John William Ferrell was born in Irvine, California, to Betty Kay (Overman), a teacher, and Roy Lee Ferrell, Jr., a musician. His parents were originally from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Ferrell became interested in performing while a student at University High School in Irvine, where he made his school's daily morning announcements over the public address system in disguised voices. He started as a member of the Los Angeles comedy/improvisation group The Groundlings, where fellow cast members Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph and former Saturday Night Live (1975) repertory players such as Laraine Newman, Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman began their careers. It was there he met Chris Kattan and the two became good friends and both went on to Saturday Night Live (1975) later. He has also appeared on several television programs, including Strangers with Candy (1999), Grace Under Fire (1993) and Living Single (1993) during his time at The Groundlings. Will also lent his voice to the armless and legless dad of cartoon family "The Oblongs". In 1995 he became a feature cast member at Saturday Night Live (1975) during the show's rapid re-casting. He was declared quite possibly the worst cast member ever during his first season. However, his talents of impersonations and range of characters shot him forward to making him arguably the greatest Saturday Night Live (1975) cast member ever. During his seven year run he is one of the few cast members to ever be nominated for an Emmy for a performance and played George W. Bush during the 2000 elections. He has appeared in every Saturday Night Live (1975) movie since his premiere on the show in 1995. In 2002 he left Saturday Night Live (1975) and was the only cast member to ever receive a farewell from all the current cast members at the end of the season finale show. Since leaving the show Will has pursued a career in films. In 2000, he married Viveca Paulin, and lives in L.A.(imdb.com) | 2:54:07 (Pop-up)

Graveyards are great. We've made special trips to visit them, all over the place. Often you get little stories on the gravestones, that sometimes, like we found today, give intimate details of peoples lives back then.

@dale, @Tom from Stirling
I saw a segment on the progam "What In The World" about how the Aral Sea shrank over time to just a pond. One theory considered by most geophysicists connects it to global warming. Tom, you should feel sorry for the fishermen who've trawled those once vast waters for many years. If you ever go to the fishing village that once strattled the sea, you'll see row upon row of landlocked fishing trawlers leaning on their hulls.
