Signs / Star Wars | 577 | 2020 | Raised in Detroit, Cleaver was inspired by his father, drummer John Cleaver, Jr. (whom Uncle June is named after), he began playing the drums at an early age. He later played violin in grade school and trumpet in junior high & high school. As a teenager he gained invaluable experience playing with Detroit jazz masters Ali Muhammad Jackson, Lamont Hamilton, Earl Van Riper, and Pancho Hagood. While attending the University of Michigan as a music education major he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Study Grant, to study with drummer Victor Lewis. He graduated in 1992 and began teaching in Detroit where he worked with Rodney Whitaker, Marcus Belgrave, Donald Walden, and with visiting musicians Hank Jones, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster, Cecil Bridgewater, Eddie Harris, Howard Johnson, Diana Krall and Don Byron. In 1995 he accepted an appointment as assistant professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Michigan, and in 1998 also joined the jazz faculty at Michigan State University. It was an amazing show though, Heidee! My friend said someone suddenly couldn’t make it and would I like to, I had not heard of them prior. I remember our seats were way up in the nose bleed section of the theater. I didn’t want to step out for a drink or anything, didn’t want to miss one second.

How are you?
Horrid semester is over but just as I ws going to start grading mountains of papers, my computer crashed and was deemed not really worthy of fixing. Couldn't afford a new one so had to wait for the disgruntled Dean to personally drop off a dynabook so I could begin this truly arduous task. I need to finish the process but I am so out of sync after my cat's antics and my lack of sleep. Wah wah wah boo hoo hoo, as SAM the computer would say.
