But I feel I don't see international, tech, most other things as in the print version (I still get the print version, but often don't have the luxury of sitting down turning pages. Like to do that Sundays when I can, weekdays I often just catch articles between other activities). Doctorjazz, the Times does have such an algorithm, developed under the (execrable) name Project Feels. It's done well for them -- online business is booming -- but it's the opposite of the sober reporting, delivered without regard for my apparent preferences, that I count on them to deliver.

(Also, no apologies necessary - I read typo fluently, and make more than my own share.)

Innit tho? Naturally, they blog about it: open.nytimes.com...

Plugging that in to the fleeing-the-city thread, COVID meant that I'd only see a paper Times once a week, after a 15-ish mile drive or bike ride… neither practicable or worth it as an everyday thing. When I did get and read the physical Saturday edition, I was shocked by how much better informed I seemed to be. It was like a whole different paper.

Been reading a bit lately about the use of machine learning and other data science tools in humanities research. It is (and has been for a very long time) a fascinating topic, but obviously the technology is nowhere near the promise some advocates anticipate. Looks like the NYT pretty clearly subscribes to the "good enough" model of design. But I love the ambiguity of "Project." Noun? Verb?

"machine learning"...that could mean any of several things but either way it sounds like something i should learn about so i can develop a plan to put an end to it

Hi there! Batiste is not great at bantering with Colbert every night, but he’s a heck of a good musician.
Avatar 2:43pm
Stork:

Ike: Colbert is perhaps the worst banterer I've ever seen, though I like him a lot. Terrible interviewer in general, and awkward as hell with Batiste. He should stop the lame attempts at chat, and let Batiste and the band play - a LOT more. Actually can't wait for Jon to quit the show and go do even more amazing stuff. He is exceptional.

- new to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm

I still like him but yeah, he’s really leaning into the awkwardness and some of the jokes are too corny. He probably misses his audience. John Oliver is better, though doing only one ep a week probably helps a lot there.
