With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio and The Stork Club denounces explicit and implicit racism. We condemn the culture of white supremacy, which enables the brutalization of black people and other communities of color. We support Black Lives Matter and the movement it stands for. |

I've been keeping Whitney Balliett's collected writing by the bedside. It's interesting to watch his position on Roach shift over the years, from admiring annoyance with his "typewriter insistence," to reverence for a continuously-evolving elder statesman. Here's a snippet from 1990: imgur.com...

I find the drink of the house, Stork's Hoochie Coochie Libation, to be altogether lacking in both Hoochie AND Coochie.
How about a double, on the house, just so that I might be absolutly certain?

I'm looking forward to patronizing some west village jazz venues when the pandemic lifts. It had been a while, even before. It's fair to say that NYC jazz venues are always closing -- I thought they might be over and done in 2001 -- but this time has been a challenge like none other.
