A good hello back Austin!

Good to see you in the chat, John R! Always a pleasure.

Austin Rich:

A very classic trope on Box 13 this week, which I've seen in many noir and detective style shows and movies. The dick is supposed to go on vacation... and instead, gets another case.
  6:02pm
John R.:

Is that Paul Frees?
  6:04pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Now I'm picturing what Alan Ladd would have looked like in college
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
Austin Rich:

The guest? It might be. Paul did a lot of radio work, and it does sound like him. I guess we'll have to wait and see if he's mentioned in the credits.

Austin Rich:

Hey, nice to see you in the chat, Ellen!
  6:05pm
Ellen Lovebug:

That makes sense. There are always mysteries any good detective can sniff out. Hi, you too! And I got a new postcard today!
  6:05pm
Charles:

Kaput! Hello.

Good Hello, Charles!

Glad the postcards arrived! I was hoping to get them out closer to the beginning of the month, but... you know...

This episode aired a week before Valentine's Day. Could this be the love interest for this episode?

:) I like orchids. I've never had the skill or time to devote to raise one

I was reading today that "Blade Runner" was originally green-lit by Alan Ladd Jr., based on the success of having green-lit "Star Wars." "Blade Runner" is a noir story in a Sci-Fi setting... a nice lineage for the Ladd family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
WR:

Austin, that reading book commercial you did was fantastic.

Freud's work was not exactly "common" in the late 40's, in spite of hive having published already. It would be more in the 50's that psychoanalysis begins to take hold in the popular culture, but it would make sense that the writer of this episode was probably fairly well read... and therefore, aware of Freud's work from college.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm

"... in spite of him having published..."
  6:12pm
Listener Robert:

This program always strikes me as more sophisticated than its competition.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Austin Rich:

I agree, Listener Robert. It has a little more research than most of the other noir / pseudodetective shows, and certainly Mr. Holiday is a little more erudite than your average joe, too. Since Dan is a writer, I suspect the writers of this show wanted to reflect that... and do the research themselves.
  6:13pm
Ellen Lovebug:

That is amazing about Blade Runner, wow

I love when there is grand orchestration to accentuate the most important or suspenseful lines

Ellen Lovebug:

I can't imagine what it would be like to read those books as a kid. Then again, I read all of Daphne DuMaurier's Rebecca for a book report for 5th grade. The teacher didn't believe I'd read it, thought I'd just watched the movie. So I put her to shame by publicly naming the differences between the book and the movie.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Austin Rich:

The music of this show is really a treat. I was listening to a show that has really poor organ accompaniment, and that's it for the music. Compared to stuff like this, it just sounds bad.
  6:17pm
Listener Robert:

Think Mr. Holiday would've tried to impress his readers with obscure details like Thomas Pynchon? Nah, I think Holiday was too cool for that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Austin Rich:

Dan is well cultured, in addition to well read. He probably sees a fair number of movies when he's avoiding deadlines.
  6:21pm
Listener Robert:

Seems she knows it's valuable, but doesn't know how/why.
  6:21pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Pretty sure I still have a lot of my childhood books. At least a couple favorites. Though likely somewhere in storage, which means I might not ever get to see them again
  6:21pm

Or she THINKS that's valuable, but missed the real treasure.

This scavenger hunt in an old house is something I'm an absolutely sucker for, but I'm sure we could all come up with a ton of examples of a similar stories in a number of adjacent genres. It's a nice story trope that's easily grafted onto a number of formats.
  6:29pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I'm part of a charity scavenger hunt in August. I'll keep you posted when it happens. Meanwhile I have to get back to work, but I oriented my whole day around Box 13, I had missed it!
  6:29pm
Charles:

I hope Suzie wins the treasure hunt.
  6:29pm
Listener Robert:

No Paul Frees, it seems.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Austin Rich:

See ya next time. Ellen.

Yeah. It might have been, but he didn't get credit. (Which happens a lot in this era of radio; sometimes, only the stars get mentioned.)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Austin Rich:

@Charles: that would be cool if Suzie is secretly good a treasure hunts.
  6:31pm
Listener Robert:

These days scavenger hunts are geocaching. Though I don't know what the tech really adds to the experience. Maybe makes participation by large numbers over longer periods easier.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

We are edging into the Christmas season on the Scarlet Queen. This is the week before Christmas Eve, so depending on the region, some kids would be home, and some people would already be off work for the holiday. I feel like that shades the way we'll hear the next few weeks of shows.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

You are totally right, Listener Robert!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Austin Rich:

Pretty good sound this week.
  6:34pm
Charles:

I did a little geocaching. I had a good time. I could have gone without the cache in a tree hole filled with slugs. Slimey!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Austin Rich:

I've been with friends who were Geocaching while we were out on a hike. It was kind of cool, but I'm not sure it's for me. I would loose patience too quickly.

That was a great SHADDAP.

oof this didnt age well…
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. This one is a little rough, story-wise.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Austin Rich:

Certainly there's a long tradition of adventure fiction that uses the "island" and "native" tropes as a story element. It's always a little misguided, and at this point, is probably as much influenced by the similar story in King Kong, a well known and widely seen movie with natives on an island acting very primitively.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Austin Rich:

None of that makes the crimes of this show "right" or "okay" given context; it was wrong as it is now. This is merely a reflection of that part of our past, presented for consideration.
  6:52pm
Charles:

I can't wait for the episode where Phil and crew will have to face a giant ape.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Austin Rich:

Yet again, Red implies he's been "avoiding" marriage, as he's married to the Scarlet Queen...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:54pm

The Scarlet Queen vs. Grape Ape.
  6:55pm

  7:05pm
Charles:

Ooh, l'm curious about that Dimension X episode now.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Austin Rich:

Dimension X often has a "creepy" flavor to the stories that aren't comedy. This one definitely depends on some old horror tropes.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Austin Rich:

I was imaging what it would be like, if someone did an edit of Chandu, with just the "plot advancing" moments from each installment. I suspect that you could cut down each episode to about five minutes.
  7:18pm
Charles:

That would be funny. What's New with Chandu!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Austin Rich:

Lots of Korla Pandit music in this episode.
  7:19pm
Charles:

Oh I thought you meant if soneone edited together just the summary at the beginning of each episodes.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Austin Rich:

That was be very funny, Charles!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Austin Rich:

I edited another show down, getting rid of the "next time," "Previously on," and other bits like that, and instead just kept the story bits. I was able to cut out about 40 minutes from the overall running time of the entire serial that way. Went from 2 1/2 hours to 1 Hour, 50 Minutes.
  7:24pm
Charles:

It adds up for sure.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Austin Rich:

I believe that was the "Friday" installment of the show, which means that listeners would have to wait two days for the next part of the story! Of course, we only listen to one Chandu a week, so our pace is off.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Austin Rich:

The sound isn't great this week. I did some EQ and noise reduction to help improve it, but there are some limitations to the overall quality I can offer, even that way. Still, it's not bad... just... thin and weird sounding.
  7:28pm
Listener Robert:

I take it from this that Chandu's real name is Frank Chandler. That sounded familiar, so I looked up the Wikipedia entry on that name. Too bad Chandu was on too early for that to have been a tribute to pulp author Terry Harknett.
  7:29pm
Charles:

That's an interesting intro.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Austin Rich:

Perhaps Terry Harknett got the name from Chandu?
  7:30pm
Listener Robert:

But maybe the pen name "Frank Chandler" was a tribute by Harknett to Chandu!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Austin Rich:

Jinx!
  7:32pm
Charles:

You listen to the radio too much, Junior!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Austin Rich:

We're coming up on a "gap" in the Dimension X schedule. In 1950, the show took a few weeks off in October, where local stations either re-ran previous episodes of their choice, or put on some original material until there were new Dimension X episodes. (Which would, interestingly, be a "re-run," a new production of a script that they had already done, but this time for Halloween.) There wouldn't be a "new" episode until November, which was common practice for shows in those days. (And, for shows these days, even.)
Avatar 7:34pm
Mr Fab:

Hey Austin! Lots of great dialogue here - calling the coffin a "wooden kimono."
"Oh, a wise guy eh?"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Austin Rich:

My question is: should I pick a few choice Dimension X episodes to "re-run" in the running order, the way local stations would have done in 1950? Or should I just play the recorded episodes, in order?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Austin Rich:

Oh yeah, the dialog in this one is great, Mr. Fab!
  7:35pm
Listener Robert:

Oh, Gowanda. I'd thought Gowanus.
  7:38pm
Charles:

Mild delusions.
  7:38pm
Charles:

There's something about that cat..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Austin Rich:

Certainly, that's some Burroughs style slang, regarding the "Junk" that guy is using.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Austin Rich:

I wonder when "junk" was first being used in reference to dope?
Avatar 7:43pm
Mr Fab:

yeah 1950 is pretty early to hear "junk."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Austin Rich:

It's not surprising that people who reading sci-fi in 1950 would also be reading other fringe writing. Perhaps the people who adapted this story had read Burroughs, too?
Avatar 7:48pm
Mr Fab:

Burroughs' "Junkie" was published in 1953, sez wiki.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Austin Rich:

The story version was published in 1934, but Fletcher Pratt. The radio version was adapted by George Lefferts, one of the in-house Dimension X writers. Lefferts is probably the one who used that slang.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Austin Rich:

by Fletcher Pratt.
  7:48pm
Charles:

It's not Grimshaw, it's Grimshaw's Monster.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Austin Rich:

I guess we'd need to read more about drug culture from the late 40's to get a sense of the origins of that word, but I suspect Burroughs is writing this at the same time. Likely: they both borrowed from the same source.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Austin Rich:

It also seems likely that Lefferts added the WWII / Mengela overlay on Dr. Grimshaw's backstory.
