a bookmark? holy crap, please enlighten my kids. they insist on just rememebering which page number they are on. that works fine for one book i guess, but they often have 5 or 6 going at the same time!

Hi all. Back to hear the dulcet tones of clarinets and Alan Ladd
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm

This is sort of the plot to DOA, but projected onto a proxy, instead of having to solve the case for themselves.

Ellen! Always a pleasure!

Hi :) *waves*. I remember the movie Double Indemnity
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm

Double Indemnity is also a very good movie! And the book, too!

Austin Rich:

Some "dicks" or people who are solving cases outside of the law are met with a lot more static than Dan gets from Detective Kling. (Sometimes Kling seems to even be a friend to Dan.) It's an interesting dynamic, for a genre that usually has more tension between police and the leads in these kinds of shows.

Sometimes I want to remind Dan: #ACAB.
  6:11pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Time to save an innocent man's life. I wonder if there was ever a tie-in book written ostensibly by Dan. I'd read it.
  6:12pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Austin Rich:

"Hunt And Peck" in modern parlance refers to someone who types slowly. (They have to "hunt" and "peck" for the keys.) But the phrase also had another meaning before that, and comes from the behavior of chickens eating seeds off of the ground. (They would "hunt" and "peck" for something to eat.)

Prior to typewriters, to "hunt and peck" also had a "slang" in the detective world: to sort of try things out, and see if any of your "hunting" revealings a "clue" you can peck.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Austin Rich:

I don't know about any novels, Ellen, but there was definitely a graphic novel.
  6:14pm
Ellen Lovebug:

OOOOH. I did not know about that 3rd meaning of Hunt and Peck. I used to collect bookmarks

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Austin Rich:

I like that both Dan and Kling can quote (and recognize) Shakespeare when appropriate.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Austin Rich:

I suspect that we can conclude that Kling went to college, too. (Or, is very into theater, at least.)
  6:19pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Have you seen Will, TNT's modern take on Shakespeare? It reimagines the crowd at The Globe as a mosh pit, for one. Jamie Campbell Bower as Marlowe is captivating

"With one arm?" Suzy is the best.

I also love how quickly Suzy can type.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm
Austin Rich:

I wrote MANY papers for my Shakespeare classes in college, plus it's good to read a few more plays here and there for other classes. I prefer 19th Century novels, but I don't mind those plays.
  6:22pm
Ellen Lovebug:

There are a few plays I'm fond of. I've gone multiple times to the fest in Ashland. Took my developmentally disabled client one year
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Austin Rich:

My grandfather on my dad's side was a High School substitute teacher, and taught a lot of classes. He was often the one putting on plays with the students, and led a few groups (some that included his own children, occasionally) for productions in Ashland. I wish I could have seen a play he directed. My grandfather was sort of an educated hillbilly, and had a really weird sense of humor.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Austin Rich:

I usually comment on the quality, and this week is fair-to-middlin', as my grandmother would say. There's certainly better sounding ones, but I did a little EQ, noise reduction and signal boost to get it to sound better. It's very listenable, but not as good as I'd like.
Avatar 6:31pm
Mike Rogers:

  6:31pm
John R.:

Is that Red calling orders in the beginning of every episode?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

Mike: not really. Typewriters are a 19th Century invention, but you didn't really see them in wide use until after WWII, when office jobs became common.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

Goodnight, Ellen and Mike!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Austin Rich:

Sometimes it's Red, and sometimes it's Neilson, depending on the episodes. They sort of sound similar as characters, and I think they might even be the same voice actor, possibly. But it seems that Red would make the most sense, given his position on the crew. But logistically, there are times he is talking, and someone else is yelling, so...

Maybe someone else can speak to the authenticity of this Australian accent. My ear is not that finely tuned, but it sounds... bad?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
Austin Rich:

I do like the idea of a "ship cat" on The Scarlet Queen. That seems like something that Red and Phil would HATE, but could offer a lot more fun story beats. The cat bits in this story speaks to a lot of cat interactions.

I like that too.

The actor playing this part sort of has an "Ertha Kitt" vibe to her delivery.

i always liked Gangbusters
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Austin Rich:

Gangbusters is pretty good, but I haven't listened to that many of them. Maybe I should give them a shot?

I found a show that features both sailing, adventure, and celebrity leads... who sort of solve crimes! It's like Box 13 meets Voyage of The Scarlet Queen. So I think that will be the show that takes over after Box 13.
Avatar 7:10pm
Charles!:

What's your take on OTR comedy Austin? I'm guessing there's not much of those on the horizon for Dimestore?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Austin Rich:

Mr. Fab suggested that, and I think I should probably institute an "April 1st" comedy ritual. (That makes the most sense, for the format.) But There's a LOT of great comedies from over the years. Mayhaps someday I'll have to sneak in a comedy show for a spell. Orson Welles Radio Almanac (a sort of "Welles does Jack Benny's show") is HILARIOUS.
Avatar 7:12pm
Charles!:

Good to know!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Austin Rich:

There's a podcast that rarely updates, but I love, called "Orson Welles: On The Air," that just plays old radio appearances of Orson Welles. I've learned a lot of weird radio history from that show. (And all the old episodes are available to hear, which are great.)

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm

As a "kids" show, they have to make sure you know that there are kids in the show, even if they aren't really in the first scene.

I almost made a "camel SFX provided by" joke!

This episode originally aired almost exactly 84 years ago! (Off by 3 days.)

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:19pm

(Chandu started airing as a "summer" show, and since it was "daily," even though it began in the summer, and we've been listening all year, we're still listening to summer episodes.)

Korla only gets credited every few episodes or so, but I should snip that out, and just add it to every episode. Korla is the best.

Going by that logic you should add it after all four shows because he's that good.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Austin Rich:

In keeping with the "Dimension X" theme (and a lot of other old radio shows from this era), there is a healthy distrust of marriage, and it's often used as the butt of many jokes.

Or in this case: as the butt of the joke of the plot of this episode.
Avatar 7:33pm
Charles:

Nice seeing you Kitschy Mama!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Austin Rich:

Of course, the idea for this story is based on a real behavior that old merchant ships used to participate in: kidnapping people to work on a long-haul sailing vessel. Transferring the idea to a deep space is a stroke of genius.

(Listening on archive because I coach football at that hour.) Holiday says only two people knew he'd be where he specified on that phone call -- forgetting about Suzy!
  10:41am
Listener Robert:

She's a touch typist too. Things not looking so good for her at this point if I'm on the case!
  10:56am
Listener Robert:

And the man Holiday is trying to finger was a typewriter sales demonstrator, who would surely have known you can't tell one touch-typist's output from another's.
