Coffee was rare in Japan before the war. After the war, what is called "American" coffee is grounds that have been used to already make a cup of coffee. The US military would make a cup and then throw to grounds away, the Japanese staff would rescue the grounds and make another cup. They called it "American." Really!

Cocal Cola came here and really pushed the Japanese to drink it, but it didn't catch on so much (some people drink it) but Coca Cola company makes it's money on tea and water and canned coffee. And half the vending machines in Japan are Coca Cola! And as you know the number of vending machines in Japan outnumbers the population! ;)
