I have been listening to bluejays scream at buzzards all morning. I think I finally scared the buzzard away when I went to put the trail cams back up. There's a dead deer down front near the road, but I think the buzzard party has pretty well wound down.

I don't have the book with me, but he said he wanted the Nightfly to be devoid of the typical irony present in Steely Dan, that it was from the perspective of a young man in a more hopeful time (the early sixties).

That Major Dudes book was really interesting. They talk a bit about how most of the Steely Dan lyrics are from the perspective of what Becker called "capital L losers." Sometimes they don't even know they are losers (example Becker used was "Deacon Blues"). But the Nightfly record really lacks that lyrical approach. Later Fagen solo records seem to reacquire that lyrical approach, but maybe with less self-delusion on the part of the narrator.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am

Wasn't The Nightfly from Fagen's own perspective? making the album autobiographical?

@ Ken From Hyde Park. I went and viewed the official video for Donald Fagen's "New Frontier." It has some fun and innovative animation but, like Slouchmaster General said, I don't think any of it was "stop motion." There is a very quick showing of one of Pablo Picasso's most famous paintings, "Three Musicians." My high school French Club used this painting and two others in a skit we created for a talent competition that brought 3 of the master's works to life with accompanying music. I wasn't in the "Three Musicians" segment, but I was involved with the one where we had 6 boys dancing in wigs and ballerina tutus. A signal moment in my early education! LOL!
