I'll mention now: I'm doing four hours tonight! While Mike Rogers is out, I'm covering "Sounds From Space." So I found a Sci-Fi dramatic comedy that will be PERFECT for fans of this show, and fans of his! So it's a night of radio dramas on Sheena's!

↳ Song: "The Syncopated Clock" by "Leroy Anderson"
While written and popularized by Leroy Anderson, "The Syncopated Clock" was a staple of late night CBS television in the 50s, and was the theme music for their "Late Show," where they played old movies from the "Shock Theater" package.

While they don't mention it every episode, they try to reinforce the way that Sailor is dressed, when they can. In 1951, women didn't wear jeans very often (except for work), so Sailor's insistence that she dress in men's clothes is supposed to make her stand out, now. However, the impact it would have in the 50's is lost on modern audiences; women wear pants and jeans all the time, and are less gendered than they used to be.

I do apologize! Seems like we had a moment of stream interruption. Hopefully that wasn't too distracting to anyone out there.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm

That usually doesn't happen, but I can't alway control our ISP. I hope everyone could still piece the story together?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:56pm

I don't believe that is actually true. (That dead men don't leave prints.) But... sounds good for a goofy radio show?

My joke around the Lava Lamp Lounge: it's the pre-cursor to Science Friday!

He seems to be a little bitter about being pre-empted by Football, and I do love that he's encouraging correspondence from listeners during the "off" season for his show.

Austin Rich:

↳ Song: "14 September 1946" by "Adventures In Science"
It is interesting, in that this show seemed to be genuinely trying to approach science as a new subject, with reporting, and headlines, etc. I suspect that, just like now, Science News was a hard sell for audiences.

It was the first thing that came up when I searched, "Adventures In Science," and since there's very little record of this radio show anywhere online, this image seemed as good as anything official.

I like this call for the world to take science seriously, so our future won't be bleak...

Oh, he is salty about the football season! Poor buddy. Been tuned in and puttering here! I'll miss Mike Rogers and AI Robot but I'm looking forward to you covering Sounds From Space!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm

↳ Mr Fab @10:21
I still tune in for Science Friday on NPR when I can... but I do feel like there's less "news" in any given show than I wish there was.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Heather Z @10:22
Yeah, you can really tell the host of Adventures In Science was not into the impending football season. I used to work at a radio station that occasionally had shows pre-empted for football games, and I REALLY felt his pain.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:25pm

There was cool science news today: that asteroid sample that landed in Utah. That was interesting!

↳ Song: ""Girl Bites Dog"" by "Jane Endicott, Reporter"
While it is nice to find a show with a female lead, it is frustrating that, like now, her boss immediately questions her qualifications. Sigh.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Heather Z @10:28
There's far too few scientists accidentally creating super-heros through some kind of advanced research. The world needs to get on it... clearly there aren't gonna be rich billionaire superheroes, so radiation might be our only option.
  🎸 10:29pm
Heather Z:

↳ Austin Rich @10:28
It would be unrealistic otherwise, though. Sigh.

But they just hired her! She hadn't even had a chance to try to deliver a story! It was just too... real?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

↳ Heather Z @10:30
Did they think they would get powers from that? I thought it was just to be rich and cruel?
  🎸 10:32pm
Heather Z:

↳ Austin Rich @10:31
Mummies were supposed to be a cure for various diseases. But I think one did have to be rich to get a nibble.

↳ Heather Z @10:32
Has there been some meme going around about eating Mummies? Seems like a lot of people have been randomly talking about that the last few weeks. Marla brought it up a while ago, too.
  🎸 10:35pm
Heather Z:

↳ Austin Rich @10:34
I did see a meme recently! It's been a thing with me for ages. I am surprised this is the first you've heard me talk about medical cannibalism! Eating mummies is fascinating to me and I talk about it..... too much.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Song: ""Requiem"" by "X-Minus One"
This was, theoretically, the "Halloween" broadcast for X-Minus one in 1955. It's not really a Halloween story, but it has it's own kind of horror to it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Song: ""Requiem"" by "X-Minus One"
We've heard this story on the show before; Dimension X did a version of it. However, THIS version has better audio quality than the one we heard before, and is slightly shorter. As a result, some scenes are slightly different, too... not much, but a little, mostly just to accomodate the shorter length.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Austin Rich:

As someone not on social media right now, any time I have three points of data, where three different people are all mentioning the same obscure thing within a week of each other, I can tell a recent meme has passed through the culture.
Avatar 10:41pm
Mr Fab:

Eating mummies? What the hell are you people talking about?!
  🎸 10:42pm
Heather Z:

↳ Austin Rich @10:39
I'm big into cat memes and cheese memes. And depression memes so we can laugh about how sad we are. Lmk if you want me to send em your way.

Hi Mr Fab! Sorry I'm always talking about the mummies!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

Here's a good Smithsonian article about it:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Mr Fab @10:41
Short version: when all the pyramids were being excavated, rich people thought eating mummies was a status symbol. (And, could cure disease, apparantly?)
  🎸 10:45pm
Heather Z:

↳ Austin Rich @10:43
Lots of snake oil type stuff. Have a mummy! Cure your scabies!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

↳ Song: ""Requiem"" by "X-Minus One"
So ironic... he made trips to the moon possible... and he can't take a trip himself!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Austin Rich:

This one's got a sad ending, so strap in for that.

And we're getting close to the end of Dimenstore! Stay tuned for a special presentation, in the spot where you would hear, "Sounds From Space." Stay tuned!
