The original archived version of this show is mangled. (I've included a reference link in the playlist.) There's skips, repetitions, and all sort of weird artifacts of poor archiving. I made hundreds of edits and changes to THIS version, so there is a little of that kind of stuff, and you can just listen to the show. HOPEFULLY, the artifacts of all the mangling are largely absent from this presentation, but don't be surprised if you hear a weird artifact of that legacy of this recording.

That I could find, I don't think the first two Elgin Watch Christmas Specials exist in the modern age. But there are a number of these holiday special that Elgin Watches put on, and they were a well loved part of the Armed Forces Radio Service broadcasts every year.

I was caregiver for a gentleman named George Johnson, near the end of his life, and he would just tell me stories all day long. Apparently, as someone who grew up in LA, and lived there in the 30's and 40's, he met Rochester, and would go over to his house to hang out, and swim. Apparently Rochester loved to have pool parties.

(George's mother was in vaudeville, so I think that was his "in"; he had some other stories that involved vaudeville folks. George told a story about partying with Spike Jones that made me INCREDIBLY jealous.)

One thing to keep in mind about this broadcast is that, at this time, Don Ameche was at the height of his sex appeal, and people were SWOONING over him at this time. So a lot of people were tuning in for Don.

These kinds of shows were broadcast on AFRS, who encouraged the kinds of irreverence that you heard on these shows. So the "anti-army" sentiments might seem bold, but were really there by design, to make the military men feel more like they belonged.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Imaginos @9:21
I'll have to check that out!

I do love this Carmen medley. On songs like this, I had to do a fair amount of editing, as there were skips. So I would cut out a similar "phrase" and replace the "skipped" part with the right musical phrase.

Almost all the songs suffered like that in some way, and needed some repair.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Austin Rich:

"Reasoned Bleatings."

I realized some people misunderstood that phrasing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Austin Rich:

There were sentences, jokes, and other "beats" of this show that had to be cut, due to there being no real option to "fix" the line. I did do one "VO" to include the part of a joke that got skipped, but otherwise, there's about three minutes, total, that I had to completely scrap.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm

I'm a sucker for Gracie Allen, and George Burns is pretty fantastic, too. They were pretty big on radio in these days, so it makes sense they would appear on a show like this.

I love her timing. She is HILARIOUS.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

She's doing laps around him, and he's sort of holding his own. It's fascinating to watch, because George certainly outlived her, and he was around, I think his reputation lasted quite a while.

But recordings like this prove she was a MASSIVE force in her day.

There is a fair amount of "cheese" in this variety show, but... I don't mind. These shows reflect the times... and this kind of cheese was what people sort of longed for. (Not everyone... but... many Americans, anyway.)

I guess "YouTube" and the Internet has sort of returned entertainment to a "variety show" sort of situation: you see some comedy, you see some music, it's serious, it's funny, it's this, it's that... and then it moves on to the next thing.

I mean, it's Les Paul? What can you say? Just an amazing performer, and very popular with GIs and soliders. I know a DJ who got to interview him in the 90's, and holy cats... how cool is that? Music royalty, if there ever was.

Our govt TV station used to show these old black and white movies, and I,'d be up in the AM. I can't remember what they were called. But it was basically a film from I think the 30s that just filmed the show from audience POV...There may have been some backstage stuff, but not sure. There were several of these movies.
