He says that the cycle of chords on one of these is extremely remarkable, and he can't figure out how Ellington pulled it off.

New to me drummer: Juan Pablo Carletti. Played with a modified kit: same layout but with frame drums instead of toms and dyembe instead of snare. I ran into him at the bar after and asked him why: "to be more African."
	♥ 11:25am StringOFperils: I think you just have an idea that you're striving forward to get to, even though you can't quite see it yet, and you're plagued with the inability to communicate it to those with whom you've forged alliances, and it's infernally frustrating because you want to get on with it, and every detail of arranging things to make someone else comfortable is just getting in the way of thinking, and it drives you mad, and you get angry and want to run away, but then you turn and look at the bandstand and there are all these lunkheads sitting there, and somebody called it genius but really it's just the loneliness of being ahead of the world. It rachets up your stress. But you can't make orchestra/band music all on your own...except when you're alone (ahhhh) working out arrangements. Genius is mostly hard work and struggle and sometimes disappointed isolation...with a soupcon of being able to clear one's head enough to hear and see things that most people don't

	♥ 11:25am StringOFperils: I think you just have an idea that you're striving forward to get to, even though you can't quite see it yet, and you're plagued with the inability to communicate it to those with whom you've forged alliances, and it's infernally frustrating because you want to get on with it, and every detail of arranging things to make someone else comfortable is just getting in the way of thinking, and it drives you mad, and you get angry and want to run away, but then you turn and look at the bandstand and there are all these lunkheads sitting there, and somebody called it genius but really it's just the loneliness of being ahead of the world. It rachets up your stress. But you can't make orchestra/band music all on your own...except when you're alone (ahhhh) working out arrangements. Genius is mostly hard work and struggle and sometimes disappointed isolation...with a soupcon of being able to clear one's head enough to hear and see things that most people don't
