Ellington knew how to get the best performances out of these men.
The difference between a band like Basie's (where the musicians are fined if they aren't on the bandstand at the appointed time) vs. Ellington, where he just walks on and is like: who's here? Or Paul is still finishing his drink? Well I'll play something that will make him want to get up here. Maybe his tune to hurry him up, or maybe Hodges... A master manipulator (in a good way?)

You put your finger on it! That's what I was wondering: I'm sure there are some great artists who realize they are great and then become difficult... but there are also completely unambitious people, non-artists, who are just difficult. BUT... not completely independent (genius and emotional complexity) perhaps

They did record together a few times.

But the quote I think of is Mingus saying to Miles: I wish I was as black (as dark) as you.

I've never seen him live, but I do like his albums (have a few, don't think I have all). He does tend to slow, minor key ruminations, though, I can see some finding it draggy (I do like it, though).

Would imagine being clear who was Leader on any enterprise would have been essential for Mingus & Miles to collaborate - once each was established as a Leader...

On one hand - one thinks of Creatives as especially sensitive & receptive sorts - but I think Having Something to Say - & then the fortitude to actually see it thru & Get It Said - requires a rather notable measure of self-interest & motive force.
Put all together - what Profile does that define...

I went Friday night (too wet and rainy to get back on Saturday). Really good: Bobby Zankel added to "In Order To Survive." New to me drummer: Juan Pablo Carletti. Played with a modified kit: same layout but with frame drums instead of toms and dyembe instead of snare. I ran into him at the bar after and asked him why: "to be more African."

I think you just have an idea that you're striving forward to get to, even though you can't quite see it yet, and you're plagued with the inability to communicate it to those with whom you've forged alliances, and it's infernally frustrating because you want to get on with it, and every detail of arranging things to make someone else comfortable is just getting in the way of thinking, and it drives you mad, and you get angry and want to run away, but then you turn and look at the bandstand and there are all these lunkheads sitting there, and somebody called it genius but really it's just the loneliness of being ahead of the world. It rachets up your stress. But you can't make orchestra/band music all on your own...except when you're alone (ahhhh) working out arrangements. Genius is mostly hard work and struggle and sometimes disappointed isolation...with a soupcon of being able to clear one's head enough to hear and see things that most people don't

One long suite of compositions, dedicated to Fred Anderson, Sunny Murray, and climate change. And followed by a story about meeting the bride of Frankenstein on the streets of Philadelphia (with Cooper-Moore egging him on).

My experience (talking to experimental filmmakers) aligns with Fox's. If they were good with words then they wouldn't be filmmakers. (Although they work at it, because they have to apply for grants, so it's like they've figured art-infrastructure-speak even if it doesn't actually articulate what they are motivated by)
