I'd disagree with that chatacterization-nothing more real or "actual" about musicians lined up in the center of a soundstage with some depth but no lateral separation. Well recorded stereo, on good playback gear, (to my ears, of course) sounds much more real. In the end, all recording is just a representation of a real performance, with the brain filling in some of the missing information.

mono more of a 'mind' listening, stereo..."ears". two kinds of spaces, one internal, the other external

Dean:

I'm with doctorjazz. The illusions generated by good stereo reproduction can be stunning. CIMP and Water Lily Acoustics tend to record exclusively acoustic instruments, sometimes solo performers. Stereo done right puts the room in which the recording was made--a church, a studio--into the space in which you're listening.

Aptly, see this:

I know some hear it that way (and prefer it); to me, it's just different. Sometimesthe mono shows up things you don't hear in the stereo, other times the stereo has more "information", varies from recording to recording.

Well I like the mono Beatles because... they mixed them that way first and then left it to the engineers to make the stereo mix. And sometimes they missed a fade or a pan or (crazily) used different performances (aborted guitar licks on "I Call Your Name," Paul's voice cracking -- albeit exquisitely -- on "If I Fell").

Didn't George Martin insist that the CD issues of the early Beatles records be mono for just that reason? That's the way they were recorded.

I'm also a big fan of humble stereo systems, relatively affordable gear combined for synergy. A friend long ago had a pair of small, floor-standing Mordaunt-Short speakers, a VPI turntable, a B&K stereo amp (iirc), and a Nakamichi CD player. It was a joy to listen to.

I think "Beatles Stereo" has a lot to do with the preference for mono-they were recorded in Mono (the mix the Beatles, and Brits, cared about), then the stereo mix was done (for US listeners), highlighting extreme separation, right and left, no center instruments, sort of a gimmick to highlight the right/left abilities of stereo (I grew up with the stereo mixes, still like them, but I can hear why they can be annoying).
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:34am
DJ Peter:

One other weird thing about stereo is headphones vs. speakers: if the sock cymbal is recorded on the left then I prefer to listen in headphones.speakers tell me i'm in the audience and headphones tell me i'm in the band. and if the hats are on the left I feel like I'm not in the audience.
But it's contextual right? If it's a recording that's clearly a studio creation and not mimicking the sound of a live band (say, "Tomorrow Never Knows") then I don't care, pan the drums all around if you want to!
