It seems as if, on a long enough timeline, most radio shows from this era have a "cowboy" or "western" installment. Certainly, westerns were much more popular in the 40's and 50's, and it was easy enough to use the same FX and other gear to recreate a "western" vibe for your show. Candy Matson, and Box 13, had westerns stories... and I'm sure we'll find more as we keep going.

A lot of pulp writers, like the people writing shows like this, were adept at changing gears, as the same writer would work a number of genres. Certainly, the mash-up and urban wise-guy and cow-poke was probably what appealed to this writer. (I think it was Lefferts, but sometimes other folks wrote this show, too.)

So this script was NOT by George Lefferts - who wrote most of the series, and created it - but it was written by his writing partner, Earnest Kinoy, who PRIMARILY wrote Sci-Fi, but in this case, did the wise-guy / cow-poke mash-up.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Austin Rich @9:28
We've heard a lot of Kinoy scripts; he did a lot of adaptations for "Dimension X" and "X-Minus One," and he occasionally turned in original stories / scripts for that show. It was nice to hear him work in another genre.

I as well. I think I've listened to several "Rat Pack" docs, and I'm not sure I would like any of them, but I'm completely fascinated.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Austin Rich:

There's a few "glitchy" audio elements to a number of Blue Beetle episodes, including some artifacts of the episodes being transferred from one medium to another. I think someone was recording this off of the radio, when someone else was playing their transcription discs, and that is the version that someone has uploaded to archive.org. So there's a number of points of failure, in terms of getting a pristine recording.

↳ Song: ""Nightfall"" by "X-Minus One"
We've heard this one before, and it is one of the more famous installments of X-Minus One. Nightfall was issued on vinyl, and among Asimov's stories, it's one of my faves. I do like that it was broadcast in December... one of the darkest months of the year.

You know those astronomers roll deep. Don't mess with that gang.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Austin Rich:

This story sort of hinges on the idea that this race of people hasn't spent any time in darkness. How do they sleep? They are depicted like regular humans in every other way... and part of the story is this idea that these people will go crazy if they experience darkness.

Certainly they sleep in some way?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

Darkness is described as an "Instinctive" human fear. Is that true?

Like a lot of Asimov stories, there's a lot of drinking in them.

This is also a sub-theme in "X-Minus One" and "Dimension X" stories, too, but Asimov seems to enjoy having his characters get drunk.
