In a couple of weeks, the Makaya McCraven trio is going to play here. Anyone know anything about this? Marquis Hill on trumpet, Junius Paul bass, McCraven on drums. His father apparently played drums with Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef. Chordless trios are a bit risky, so any input would be welcome.

Patty Hearst, kidnapped fifty years ago today. I was old enough, 14, to recall the news reports. It only just occurred to me that the kidnapping took place on the south side of the Berkeley campus, along the north side of which runs a street, Hearst. And of course the Greek Theatre was funded by her grandfather, WRH.

When I saw McCraven: he had Joel Ross and Jeff Parker (plus a bassist whose name is escaping me) in tow. Parker and Ross were both willing to be "rhythm players," create a riff and hold on to it, as if they were looped.
I think rhythm section players are predisposed to playing this way. Not all horn players are. I saw Peter Evans "Being and Becoming" with Craig Taborn in for Ross, and Evans himself can play that way: repeating a rhythmic lick.

Dean:

I know of, but don't know the Davis opera. I need to remedy that situation!

Speaking of rhythm, Trio M at Piedmont Piano Co. two nights ago were wonderful. Purely in terms of decibels, Dresser and Wilson were prominent. Melford was almost always on, but not able to compete with her partners' volume level. That is, until she went berserk and made a lot of her own sweet noise.

She played a 7.5" Fazioli, only because the store's 9" was being test-driven at Stanford. The owner of the store, which supplies water and wine to customers, announced, "If you place your glass of water on a piano, you just bought it." Price-tag for the instrument Melford was playing? $200K. Now consider that classical pianist Angela Hewitt plays the flagship Fazioli, which movers dropped not too long ago, leaving her without her favorite keyboard.

I've seen Joel Ross play just as you describe, locked in with bass and drums beneath a soloing horn. For me, it evokes both Kansas City riffing and hip hop sampling. I dig it.

I think that's a problem-Vijay Iyer also had to compete with Sorey and Raghavan, who were whipping up quite a storm, and Iyer wasn't always clearly audible (he's not by nature a piano pounder).

Dean:

Trio M's encore was a Matt Wilson tune, "Don Knotts." Something tells me they play that one a lot.

Campus station KALX earlier today played this amazing Sonata da Chiesa by Adolphus Hailstork, Harlem Chamber Players, cond. Tania León.

What they're hearing on the stage may not be what we're hearing in the audience.
I have just been listening to a duo CD of Kris Davis and Ken Vandermark, and I think that Davis is recorded too far back... you have to TRY to listen to her. And it's only a duo!

Dresser was amplified, and Wilson plays with vigor. Sets consisted of three tunes without breaks, yet it was clear when they had turned from one to another.

I only just saw Iyer for the first time. They have very different sounds -- or densities, to use doctorjazz's useful term -- but he made me think of John Lewis, cerebral and swinging. He sat very still, barely pedaled, and almost never tapped, the fingers of his right hand dropping like type hammers against the platen.
