Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - September 16, 2008

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Sean daily take that

Tue. 9/16/08 11:09pm From: efd

he never comments on my show, I don't think he stays up this late.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:12pm From: wonder woman

efd--how was your summer? i hope you remeber me,,,TONI DAYTONA,, i'm in the mood for some funk 2nite evan. please play some,,,,,love u mucho!!!!=)=)=)

Tue. 9/16/08 11:13pm From: Sybil

No fair! You can't be Wonder Woman! I called dibs!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:14pm From: efd

call in the St. Bernards! welcome back, Toni.

Not much funk tonight, I'm afraid.. at least, not til after the live session that's coming up

Tue. 9/16/08 11:15pm From: john

Hey folks! Think i'm finally getting to the Dodger game this Sunday! Went to my first Angels game on Saturday, did get to see K-Rod break the most meaningless record in baseball.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:17pm From: Sybil

Great, John!

Did you see the Mets-Braves game Sunday? I'm still trying to figure out what got into Tavarez.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:17pm From: toni daytona

sybil u could be batgirl. EFD u have NO IDEA how much i missed you,,=) hugz & kissess

Tue. 9/16/08 11:18pm From: Billy in JC

love that stones tune.....and the devil dogs cover of it as well.....and now headcoats! keep it up

Tue. 9/16/08 11:18pm From: Sybil

And I just want to say, for the record,

BLAST THESE "MATH" QUESTIONS!

And no, I won't be batgirl ;P

Tue. 9/16/08 11:18pm From: efd

hi John, hi Sybil!

John, I would argue that the most meaningless record in baseball was broken this evening in the Bronx.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:21pm From: john

Sybil, I did see it, dammit all. All I can think is that any Brave's career is automatically resuscitated by coming in against the Mets. And you're always Wonder Woman to us.

EFD--Doesn't even count. They tore down Yankee Stadium in 1974.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:21pm From: Sybil

There's a lot of competition for the record of Most Meaningless Record in Baseball.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:22pm From: toni d.

evan GROOOOOOOOOOOOVY set 2nite,,,tell me did ya miss me??? ok syb,,u could be wonder woman

Tue. 9/16/08 11:23pm From: efd

if you like the opening set just wait til you hear the live band coming up!
And yes, of course we missed you!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:24pm From: Sybil

I like this song a lot. Would I like it as much if I were listening to the lyrics? Happy chain?

Tue. 9/16/08 11:24pm From: john

I'd still vote for the save--an arbitrary designation, the breaking of the single-season record for which nearly guarantees a blown-out arm in future.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:26pm From: Mr Met

in the in game poll tonight, 56% don't think the mets are making the postseason at all

Tue. 9/16/08 11:26pm From: Sybil

Great set btw.

And Toni, we missed you like anything!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:27pm From: john

Was the theme of this set The Rolling Stones and a bunch of bands that blow them the hell out of the water?

Tue. 9/16/08 11:28pm From: Sybil

Oh, no. It MUST be the Mets in the NL East, and the Dodgers in the NL West. Poetic justice. (My sensible Yankee fan colleagues [yes, they do exist] both agree.)

Tue. 9/16/08 11:28pm From: E.L.

I didn't see this one coming.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:28pm From: efd

what happened in the Senior Circuit this evening? I was only following the AL East on the internets before my show.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:28pm From: Sybil

John nailed this set, I do believe!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:29pm From: efd

and the blowing-them-the hell-out-of-the-waterest of them all is still to come!

(There is a reason behind this p. como track which I will explain presently...)

Tue. 9/16/08 11:30pm From: john

Phils win, Mutts lose. You may hear that a lot. What stinks about that is that I'm looking for tickets for the last regular season game at Shea and if they don't make the playoffs they'll be a lot more expensive.

Hmm...Pretty Things? Flamin' Groovies? Not a lot of other bands can outrock the Downliners Sect...

Tue. 9/16/08 11:31pm From: pete

i think of this set as Perry Como & Friends

Tue. 9/16/08 11:31pm From: Sybil

The Dodgers won. Manny has cut his hair (again) to about 2004 length, except for payess-dreads at the ears. Or payot. Dang, what's English for payot?

I checked out of the Atlanta-Pirates game after Julian finished so I couldn't tell you how they fared in their role as spoilers/kingmakers.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:31pm From: toni daytona

efd,,sybil,,john i feel the love the love in here. EVAN is the REAL love guru=)=) ohhhh efd will you bb in the fall schedule??

Tue. 9/16/08 11:32pm From: E.L.

Perry does lead nicely into Evan's Theme.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:32pm From: Sybil

And Lionel Newman to top it off!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:32pm From: Mr Met

mets lost 1-0 to the nantionals, phillies beat atlanta 8-7....milwauke lost too......

Tue. 9/16/08 11:34pm From: john

Sybil, I just call them curly sideburny ringletty things. That may not be in the dictionary, but then again I don't wear them.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:41pm From: toni d.

guys,,i'm afraid this is my last post of the nite=( it's been fun,,efd i hope you will be back in the fall ,,G'NITE ALL peace--love & joy=)=)=)

Tue. 9/16/08 11:42pm From: efd

E.L., that segue was another motivation.

Goodnight Toni!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:42pm From: john

There is really loud mariachi music coming in through my window from a glorified taco stand just across Sunset Blvd from me. Exceedingly odd.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:44pm From: efd

thanks for the baseball updates... sounds like I will be hearing a lot of despairing callers on WFAN on my way home tonight.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:44pm From: Sybil

Atl-Phillies, not Pirates.

I still get Cincinnati and Cleveland confused, too. I'm geographically challenged.

Tue. 9/16/08 11:49pm From: Mr Met

yeah i'd steer cleer of WFAN tonight!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:51pm From: efd

well, it keeps me awake when I'm driving home. Though it was more fun when the desperate Yankee fans were calling in.

I'm going to see the Mets/Cubs next week, I guess that'll be something like the 5th-to-last regular season game. I am pulling for them to bounce back and prevail!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:51pm From: Jim

The Phillies rule!!!!!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:52pm From: a foxy babe

evan you are one of the greatest dee jays by far!!

Tue. 9/16/08 11:54pm From: efd

oh hi, Jim!

Toni, I thought you were done for the night...?

Tue. 9/16/08 11:58pm From: Mr Met

yes there still is hope.....i was at the sunday night game where delgado hit 2 hrs......the place was packed....everyone was so psyched....time will tell i guess

Wed. 9/17/08 12:05am From: Joe

The lead singer sounds like Michael Caine when he talks. Which gives him many awesomeness points.

And this is to nobody in particular, but though I had no tickets, I will be at the Stadium on Sunday, just walkin' around. Call me sentimental.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:08am From: efd

hi Joe! You're sentimental.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:22am From: Sybil

I saw Yaz play in his last season, at Yankee Stadium, the last game I was ever able to drag my son to. Yaz hit a HR too. Oh, and the Red Sox won.

The place will always be special to me for that.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:27am From: efd

That's a nice memory, Sybil.

I remember going to the rally/parade/whatever it was (I guess I don't remember very well!) in Boston after Yaz got either his 3000th hit or 400th HR.

I don't know why I'm even mentioning this since I'm clearly fuzzy on the details.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:29am From: Joe

Oh god, these dudes are so awesomely Anglo.

Even though I spent the first ten years 20 minutes down the LIRR from Flushing, I ended up a Yanks fan. The fact we had to -drive- all the way to the Bronx, or ride the subway, made the stadium seem that much more special. Plus the design. If you've ever been to Shea, you know what I mean.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:31am From: efd

Joe, you have no idea how awesome they are in person.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:32am From: Sybil

Thanks Fallen Leaves! Thanks Diane!

Wed. 9/17/08 12:37am From: Joe

I gots my tickets for the Wire show. No bitching from me this time.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:37am From: john

My first game was at Yankee Stadium back when the monuments were on the field, before the depredations of 74-75 turned it into a theme park-like shell of its former self. I have much fonder memories of Shea. I have no feelings at all about the destruction of Yankee Stadium, as it was really torn down 34 years ago. Just one man's opinion.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:41am From: Joe

I've been hearing that alot, from my own dad even, and I do think it's a valid opinion. But as a younger dude, its the only Stadium I've ever known. Its like with comics and cartoons. The Golden Age is whatever was happening when you were 8.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:45am From: john

Amen to that. So you missed the Groovy Goolies and Hong Kong Phooey too? Dewd.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:50am From: Joe

Cartoon network, brah. I am -down- with the Phooey.

I recommend the Sublime cover version of the theme song . It was on some Skunk records comp of cartoon theme song covers.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:51am From: efd

btw, if any of you missed Tom Scharpling's recounting of his recent visit to Yankee Stadium with his Dad you should be sure to check out the archive of his show.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:54am From: john

Phooey is epic. Scatman Crothers and Kung Fu Fighting all in one janitorial package.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:56am From: Joe

I always liked how he was the only talking dog on the show, and nobody figured out that maybe the talking dog janitor and the talking dog karate superhero were maybe the same guy/dog.

Wed. 9/17/08 12:58am From: john

He wore a hat as penrod the janitor and a mask as phooey. I think that's what fooled people.

Wed. 9/17/08 1:02am From: john

Plus he was quicker than the human eye, which could only have added to the confusion.

Wed. 9/17/08 1:26am From: christian

play it at 33!

Wed. 9/17/08 1:26am From: Joe

I thought the sped-up version was thoroughly plausible, especially given the exclamation point in the band-name.

Wed. 9/17/08 1:29am From: Joe

AWESOME. I take back the dig at the name. Wow.

Wed. 9/17/08 1:30am From: christian

did anyone ever have that CD of saturday morning cartoon theme song covers? I believe Sublime did the cover of Hong Kong Phooey...

Wed. 9/17/08 1:33am From: john

i do have that CD! I didn't remember who did Phooey, though Butthole Surfers' Underdog and Liz Phair and Material Issue doing the Banana Splits theme come to mind. Of course it's 3000 miles away now.

Wed. 9/17/08 1:34am From: Joe

Yeah we went over that. I thought it was on Skunk but looks like I was, as they say, "way off". Butthole Surfers doing Underdog, Reverend Horton Heat doing Johnny Quest, and to truly blow the mind, Gigantor by HELMET

Wed. 9/17/08 1:38am From: john

Yeah! I forgot Gigantor was on that too. Used to rush home from school to watch that on Channel 9...

Wed. 9/17/08 1:43am From: Wht

that is a fine association song

Wed. 9/17/08 1:43am From: christian

Wed. 9/17/08 1:45am From: efd

glad you agree, Wht!

Wed. 9/17/08 1:47am From: Joe

Have we a translation of "Nos Llamamos"?

Wed. 9/17/08 1:48am From: chris

we call ourselves?

Wed. 9/17/08 1:49am From: efd

that seems plausible.

Wed. 9/17/08 1:51am From: Joe

clever

Wed. 9/17/08 1:06pm From: Jessica

Here's my belated "Wooooo!" for The Fallen Leaves.
Man, they sound like they're having a good time.
