A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Thu. 8/16/18 10:58am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Linda Lee I am SO TIRED of hearing blatant AutoTune used in pop songs. It is such as stupid ugly development. It sounds like a robotic voice to me.

it is that.

Avatar Thu. 8/16/18 11:03am melinda:

@Neil I feel the same way, it's like robots took over and they thought no one would notice. If it was used only now and then I could appreciate it more as another musical tool (I'm a fan monotone robot-voice), but it's not a substitute for a genuinely tuneful voice.

Aretha has now passed. She was an amazing voice and as an ex-Detroiter this is a big loss for Detroit music.
Avatar Thu. 8/16/18 11:07am The Oscar:

@melinda That's pretty much my take. Dismissing it outright feels like shunning synthesizers or drum machines, but the fact that A&R types don't need to take musical talent into account when finding new singers is dispiriting.
Avatar Thu. 8/16/18 11:08am Linda Lee:

that's the bothersome bit for me as well, Oscar. so then the surface is most important. & we're into that one too far as it is.

Reading Ned Rorem's New York Diary. Just read a hilarious passage in which Leonard Bernstein conducts the premiere of Rorem's Third Symphony. Rorem writes, "On the same program, though, was Bill Russo's new piece whose attractive last movement featured Maynard Fergusen's trumpet which, like Truman Capote's opinions, sometimes reached pitches only dogs can hear, sticking out like a sore thumb and rather sounding like one..."

Depending on my mood - rereading any Chronicles of Narnia

  Thu. 8/16/18 11:33am Dean:

Reading poetry, too, lately: Frederick Seidel, William Alabaster (devotional stuff by a 16th century Protestant-turned-Catholic-times-two), William Carlos Williams. Must return to Emily Dickinson, John Ashbery, many others. Did folks see the story in the NYT by Ilya Kaminsky about his return to Odessa, where he'd grown up deaf? Around 2005 I met him at a gate at Oakland Int'l Airport. He had just published his first book of poetry, Dancing in Odessa. We flew together and talked Shakespeare (whose work he knew very well in English), poetry, studying law. He is a marvelous poet.
