well, well, coelacantho let it out of the bag. Sadly, I am not on the Fall Schedule - I couldn't sustain this time slot and I'm angling for a daytime jam but was not yet in the cards...I do have some fill-ins lined up already. And you got me for one more week!

That’s my selfish reaction. Tom, love your show; I will very much miss it as long as it doesn’t show up in future schedules.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22am

Wow - thanks Scraps! Humbled and will be getting back on I hope in the future, just couldn't keep this late night weekend thing going - in the meantime at least one Sept fill-in and a few in November to start...

Have greatly enjoyed this run of DatDash as well. Solid on its own but also an excellent followup to MM. Hope you land at a time I'm listening. Plenty of unlistenable stuff during the week I tune out for (not naming names...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am
coelacanth∅:

unfortunately the cards are, and have been for over 5 years now, stacked against punk, metal, noise, outjazz... "edgy" music, by wfmu standards (?) -as far as daytime and evening shifts go.
i guess you could stay if you wanted to do mn>3 or 3>6 right?
that must wear most people down.

Still, I have lots of years old stuff to page through....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am
coelacanth∅:

well as far as "edgy" music, of course we still have Creamo Coyl and several others; but fmu is like "the left wing" - gradually moving toward the center, where people who couldn't stand being jarred occasionally or cracked wide open maybe a better way to phrase it can now call themselves out there, as they listen to an out there version of the z morning zoo.
sorry.
(and i like Clay; just not the entire morning show concept)

All my favorite shows have been the 12-3/3-6 variety, hmm

coelacanth∅:

Scraps i think many people who've been listening to wfmu for a few years have reservations about the high-hype crap. people who came for the music and/or adventures in sound of one sort or another. i came for the music. >40 years ago. never listened to the religious fanatics when they were on, pre internet; so i've always been used to wfmu not being there for me sometimes. but yeah that is what some people call "an insult to one's intelligence".
when tourists point at my tshirt the majority of the time they mention only one show. wake n bake. these are the same people who get in front of the dumb backward locals at the café, and leave their garbage on the tables.
z morning zoo people who now think they're hip because they listen to a bizarroworld version of it.

We've been having dinners in the back yard with this lineup as our background and it's been perfect! Tom we're going to miss you! Of course we appreciate your giving up Saturday nights and staying up insanely late for us this summer. Totally understandable not to want to return. Thanks for the time you've put in!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am

Agent Peter, when the religious crap was on m-f, 6-9, after fmu got on the www, we had a web-only show each day. a different show every day, like the rest of the schedule. 5 good shows. when Clay's morning zoo came in those shifts were obliterated.

I don't know if planed or not but WFMU is always a good soundtrack to watch the man burn at burning man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am
coelacanth∅:

i'd bet the wake n bake show is mostly listened to by people in or around new jersey anyway; and if they just broadcast that exactly as they used to broadcast jm in the am, just frequency modulation, and make those shifts freeform again on the web, they wouldn't lose a significant number of listeners.
i have trouble imagining people in germany or scotland or even san francisco give a crap about the wake show.

diciassette "jm in the am" (jewish moments in the morning) was just that.hosted by a charismatic zionist with an extremely devoted following for decades, who contributed lots of money to the station. just a couple of years ago he moved on to something else and instead of taking the opportunity as more time for freeform radio Ken decided to create the first paid dj position in fmu's history, wake n bake - somehow reasoning that it would create more revenue. maybe it has done that? though i cannot imagine how, and i doubt it.

It really does give one an appreciation for what Ken did/does
  1:35am
rw:

coel, Yes! I wake up to Surface Noise, Garbage Time, etc. Those shows are plenty populist in a morning show sort of way for me. Then off to work around the time the noontime shows kick in. Drive home to the Downtown Soulville, etc. and evenings (dinnertime into homework time) are Daniel Blumin and Dave the Spazz into Inflatable Carcass and Nick Name.
  1:37am
rw:

coel, the documentary seemed a little dated to me not long after it came out. Worth watching though. Mostly talks about how weird WFMU is and how difficult it is to keep the funding going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am
coelacanth∅:

Ken saved the station, at least that's how it seems to me. it seriously might not exist now if he hadn't taken over back then.
unfortunately i think he's now lost sight of what made fmu so wonderful to begin with...that wonderfulness that "the masses" would only mock, but now a lot of wfmu is masses-friendly.

@diciassette

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am
coelacanth∅:

rw i think you're right, to a large degree anyway; but you never stopped appreciating new sounds, and things new to you - which i think is the common thread of wfmu listeners. (with the morning show being somewhat of an exception to that; though i like to think formerly closed people might open up a bit because of that show)
we're digging on NOT hearing the same great song every damn day or every damn hour - even if it is great.
  1:46am
rw:

There's a public radio station out here who's tag line is "Hand Picked Music". I'm guessing to differentiate themselves from algorithmically picked music. Unfortunately whoever's doing the picking has terrible taste.

Ha! Mostly the neighborhood kids hung out here. I felt like I was doing them all a public service by having weird music playing all the time. The worst was when my daughter was about 14 and would crank misogynistic hip-hop in the car. We had a few discussions over that!
