fortunate enough to have survived the purges of artists and intellectuals by the Khmer Rouge. Zac found Chhom in the Cambodian community of Long Beach CA, and the rest is history...
Dengue Fever is one of the many great bands participating in the annual one-night world music festival Globalfest at Webster Hall, 125 East 11th St, on January 21st.

Ron English, who has been accurately labeled "celebrated prankster father of agit-pop," has since the early eighties been tirelessly building a prolific body of work including his controversial and illegal "liberation" billboard art series in which his favorite corporate targets include Joe Camel, Mickey Mouse, and McDonalds. In fact his less than flattering Ronald McDonald images are featured in Morgan Spurlock's documentary "Super
Size Me." As well as painting (on canvas and other surfaces), the
ever-busy artist also makes sculptures and toys such as his brand new Cathy Cowgirl toys. Additionally he has worked closely with other artists including Shepard Fairey, the Billboard Liberation Army, and Daniel Johnston with whom he collaborated in both visual art and music. Ron English will play some of those recordings as well as talk about his illegal art past.

The Ex Tuesday, January 9th, 2007, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
Since 1979, Holland's greatest musical export has been setting the bar higher and higher. Starting off as squat-residing political punks that learned music only after booking their first gig, the band has grown into an incredible example of living its message via passionate and prolific output both musical and print-related. Through the years, their world travels have allowed them to grow and absorb many genres of music into their sound, from European folk, to improvisational jazz and African pop; in the last few years they completed a self-promoted tour of Ethiopia and have released CD's from some of the continent's greatest musicians including the famed Konono Number 1. Live, the current lineup of Terrie, Andy, G.W. Sok, and Katherina are a veritable tornado of pounding rhythms and dissonant twin guitars, tearing up the stage more each time they return to New York. They appear for the first time ever in WFMU's live room today for a full session (with video forthcoming on the blog!), plus interview afterwards that will include their current tourmate DJ/Rupture.

single drum performance that marks his first return to the US since his late

A special, sickly sweet box of Christmas
chocolates.

Max Brennan / Wight Light Orchestra Wednesday, December 13th, 2006, 7pm - 8pm
on
Phuj Phactory with Ergo Phizmiz
A visit to the Phuj Phactory from "spiritual disco technician" Max
Brennan, creator of the acclaimed "Alien to Whom" and "Maxwell House" series. The Wight Light Orchestra is the latest adventure from prolific producer Max. After a break from the business and a lot of time spent in the Himalayas on a cosmic quest of meditation and presence, Max has teamed up with fellow cosmic warriors Louis Soteriou and Jon Mcmullen. The project "Wight Light Orchestra" (named after the Isle of Wight, which means life, sprite, & enlightened spirit) aims to capture and
transmit directly from the heart, pure presence. The project weaves mantras, Tibetan singing bowls, temple bells, classical guitar, and rhythmic dynamics with twisted time signatures and inspired lyrics not seen in Max's work until now. This project
is forging ahead with the emphasis on presence, on being here and now and playing to the global -- if not universal -- presence and consciousness that's now growing in the boundaries of social awareness.
Jesus Christ Superstar Wednesday, December 13th, 2006, 9am - Noon
on
Ken's show
Ken celebrates the birth of the baby Jesus by paying musical tribute to the death of the baby Jesus. Yes, Ken finally purges Andrew Lloyd Weber from his system by playing three hours of versions of Jesus Christ Superstar. So maybe it won't go to
three hours. It will still be way too much Jesus-based bombast for that hour of the day. Included will be surf versions, moog versions, versions in Japanese, Russian, Swedish, and the best version ever - the Dutch one. Everything but the original soundtrack and the unmentionable film version.
