project called the M. Shanghai String Band, Brooklyn musician Matt
Schickele is resurfacing to come out to WFMU. According to Pitchfork
Media, "Matt Schickele's approach is distinctly different, drawing
from weird parallel universes of sound while still keeping one foot
planted on Earth. It's a balancing act that's hard to fully
comprehend, and even harder to ignore." Matt gives us a rare live
performance.

David Hykes AND Botanica Monday, November 13th, 2006, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
Starting things off on a beautiful, otherworldly note is David Hykes, founder of Harmonic Chant and the Harmonic Presence work, an
Enlightenment-dedicated body of primordial wisdom practices,
including the universal sacred music music called Harmonic Chant, as well as meditative awareness training and healing harmonization. David is a composer, singer, world and intraworld traveller in a stay-at-om universe, but is here for a special, intimate concert and kirtan with Krishna Das to benefit The Breathing Project on November 16th in NYC.
Then, led by erstwhile Firewater co-conspirator and international
piano man Paul Wallfisch, Botanica makes punk rock chamber music for
the 21st century. Bridging the gap between Secret Machines and The
Dresden Dolls, Botanica produces gritty, epic, sexy music that is
neither blind to politics nor ignorant of romance. Called the sonic
equivalent of an Aki Kaurismaki film by Intro Magazine (Germany),
Botanica's music was also recently described in the New Yorker as
"...trafficking in sonic noir with an undercurrent of sinewy
menace...sinister sophisticates providing the perfect soundtrack to
the after-hours, urban experience."
Brooklyn Qawwali Party was founded around the question: What would happen
if New York jazz musicians were to play and improvise around the melodies
of the late great Sufi Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan? Answer: Tune in and find out! BQP consists of fourteen musicians: five horns,
three percussionists, guitar, acoustic bass, harmonium, and three
designated clappers who will all squeeze into the FMU studios for a live

Still Please" on Merge Records.
Tom Brosseau Friday, October 13th, 2006, 9am - Noon
on
Give the Drummer Some with Doug Schulkind
The old-timey music of the '20s and '30s was actually a revival of the music of an era half a century before. Tom Brosseau, a 27-year-old North Dakota native, sings songs of lost love that shimmer like aural tintypes, harkening back to that earlier time. His guitar is lovely, a harmonica adds color, the pump organ is a masterful touch. But the ingredient in this mix that will flat out give you chills is Brosseau's voice, which sounds eerily like a high-lonesome reincarnation of Jeff Buckley--with faint echoes of Karen Dalton.

That paved the way for the pioneering cut'n'paste duo's influential hip-hop "Lesson" series which in turn went on to influence a later generation of DJ/producers including Cut
Chemist and DJ Shadow. Since then Steinski, as a solo artist, has
continued to innovate through his numerous recordings and occasional live performances. He has also produced many radio specials both in the UK and USA including many for WFMU.

Later in the program, Sweden's Jakob Olausson with Susanne Skov Gronlund, will craft beautiful tunes that touch on lazy cosmic excursions. Jacob's been described this way, "If Skip Spence were somehow, instead of finding his white-frocked self stuck in the rat-infested hole that was Bellevue, transplanted to the pine forests north of Malmo, Sweden, in a sonic nest of gimbri, bells, shakers, and clothed in Tibetan silk, one would come slightly
closer to the reality of Jakob Olausson's migratory musical whims.."
