John Allen's show
Seven years in the making, My Name is Albert Ayler is a new documentary about the iconic avant-garde saxophonist. Obsessed with his radical music and by the thought that people one day would understand it, Ayler said in his own words "If people don't like it now, they will". In 1962 he recorded his first album in Sweden. Eight years later he was found dead in New York's East River, aged 34. Director Kasper Collin will phone in for an interview to be broadcast the morning of the US theatrical premiere at the Anthology Film Archives. (THIS SHOW IS WEBCAST ONLY)
Sic Alps Tuesday, November 6th, 2007, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
If most so-called modern psych and garage bands seem to have trodden paths a bit too familiar with you these days, enter the Sic Alps, a Bay Area combo
joyfully stuffing the Nuggets Box roster into a reverb-soaked trash compactor
and extracting busted-up remnants at leisure. While the Alps' junkpile
approach to classic rock via wasted echo-chamber vocals and
lost-in-space mod guitars might sound like a bad trip to some, there's a
real cohesion and weirdly tuneful vibe carried through the scuzz that might
make their new LP Description of the Harbor one of your year's faves.

on
Liz Berg's show
We Are the Arm brings synthesizers and strangeness to WFMU from upstate New York. With sounds that could be filed under art damage and post-punk, We Are the Arm's paranoid songs are fit to be the soundtrack for a malevolent alien invasion (they've opened up for Gary Wilson, after all). Roll the Super 8 and prepare to submit to your overlords.
Francis Baudevin Sunday, November 4th, 2007, 9pm - Midnight
on
Stochastic Hit Parade with Bethany Ryker
Listen in for the world-premiere of a specially-commissioned sound piece by Swiss abstract painter Francis Baudevin. Drawing from dozens of albums from his personal collection of his experimental music, this new work is an extreme accumulation of continuous sound that can be at times a densely packed barrage of information, and at others, an extended moment of almost-stillness. The beginning and the end of the work is
marked by a "jingle" appropriated from an early vinyl copy of Terry
Riley's "In C".
This broadcast is the first of three programs on WFMU as part of
PERFORMA07, a festival of performance art across NYC. Commissioned by PERFORMA Radio, this series expands the field of performance into radio-space by inviting visual artists use radio as an artistic medium.

The label's latest release "The Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru" is a revelatory collection of chicha - a heretofore obscure variation of Colombian cumbia played by Peruvian bands in the 70s. He will introduce us to the CD and some tracks that didn't make it. We'll also hear other Peruvian styles, some vintage Colombian cumbia, Cuban electric guitar music, and whatever else Olivier comes up with from his bountiful collection.

Ed Askew with Joshua Burkett Tuesday, October 30th, 2007, 9am - Noon
on
Hatch's show
After languishing in obscurity for decades, the music of idiosyncratic singer-songwriter Ed Askew is finally getting the attention it deserves. "Ask The Unicorn", his 1968 debut album for ESP-Disk, has often been compared to the work of labelmates Pearls Before Swine. Askew's equally wonderful second album, "Little Eyes", was recorded a few years later but remained unreleased until the De Stijl label pressed a limited edition
LP in 2003. This year, they've finally made it available on CD. Although Askew once accompanied himself on a kind of Latin American soprano guitar called a tiple, carpal tunnel syndrome now prevents him from playing. For this live session, contemporary psychedelic folk artist Joshua Burkett will be playing the instrument for him.
