Not the Restless Records' Doughboys of the late '80s/early 1990s. These Doughboys are a 1960s New Jersey garage band from Plainfield. They were regulars on Zacherle's Disc-o-teen and won a battle-of-the-bands contest on that program that earned them a contract with Bell Records. Their two single releases, "Rhoda Mendelbaum" and "Everybody Knows My Name" are sought-after collector's items. The Doughboys have recently reunited with a great new album called "Is It Now".

Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg
Puerto Plata is a 84-year-old acoustic guitarist from the Dominican Republic. He held tight to rural guitar traditions even as they were formally discouraged under the Trujillo dictatorship and informally because of popular prejudices. The master of Dominican son is in town to play Globalfest, the annual, star-studded world music showcase at Webster Hall on January 13th and also to support his new CD "Mujer de Cabaret" on IASO Records. Puerto Plata will be joined by IASO mastermind Benjamin de Menil, whose mission is to share once-neglected Dominican roots music with the world.

Palestine, The Velvet Underground, Jim O'rourke, and Faust. Although Tony has been a frequent guest on WFMU, this will be the first time that he will perform in the studio. His collaborator, M. V. Carbon has performed live with Tony on a number of occasions and performs frequently as a solo artist.

For this week's first installment, Rob shares a succulent Spanish lunch with the charismatic young Inuit singer Tanya Tagaq. Tanya hails from Nunavut in arctic Canada. She has morphed traditional Inuit throat-singing into her own wildly dynamic, very un-traditional vocal style. Tanya, who has collaborated with Bjork as well as the Kronos Quartet, showcased with her own ensemble at WOMEX and she'll be in New York at the BAM Cafe in March.
