A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

YB, sure -- but defaulting to having Google read your geo info and demanding an e-mail address to use a free ID service is one step past running on AWS, I'd say.

We have some white-throated sparrows hanging about, and current thinking is we have several of the genetic variants. Punk rock head stripes!

@NGH: the other day in Military Park in Newark, we were looking for warblers when we heard the last bit of a hermit thrush's refrain being repeatedly endlessly high up in an oak tree. Usually those guys are on or near the ground, so we crane our necks and eventually spy a goddamned starling just perfecting the doubled flanged sound of the final notes over and over again. It was really something. Then the guy went back to typical starling lazer sounds.

Rev Rab, bird song is still a mystery to me in many ways, but Kate and our very musical neighbor are great at it, so I bet you would be. There's an entire system of notation for it, which is discussed in many field guides. Find (or check out) a Petersen's or Golden, and I bet the first lesson will get you started finding more.

I am going out of my way to NOT use Amazon as much as possible. Yes, it means paying for shipping sometimes when I could get free shipping. Example: I bathe with Dr. Bronner's liquid soap every AM (mixed 50/50 with water in a squeeze bottle, Tea Tree blend). I also do my hand-washing with it. So, I now buy it from an indie health food store or direct from Dr. Bronners, NOT Spamazon. Also pivoted away from them for as many household items as possible (shower spray, cast iron pan cleaners, kitchen chotkies, etc). BEZOS IS EVIL. I am SO glad that we, the people of Queens, kicked his greedy ass to the curb despite Cuomo and DiBlasio fellating him at every opportunity.

Andrea and Dayffid, my partner, Kate (K8 on the boards, mostly Sundays), has been a teaching artist in NYC schools for like fifteen years. Drama, poetry, music, and singing.

I used to teach at Hunter College, but the pay sucked, and I'm not the best speaker. I would love to go back to NYC, but I'm not sure I'm cut out for sub teaching (due to the stories of my friends that teach at NYC public schools).

Andrea:

redbed - sure! the teaching artist world is interesting and in flux like everything else now. Some people do it as just one of their gigs, and it can be a puzzle, and it is not for everyone. There are wonderful nonprofit organizations and some that suck. You gotta love it and love kids and be committed to equality etc... but I love it, especially after experiencing terrible jobs. Feel free to email me.
@Handy- interesting about your partner- does she like it?

Handy Haversack:

Actually, Augusto Boal's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, which lent itself to the title of the episode of the Modern World today, is critical to Kate's teaching and her own pedagogy. (Jinx, Andrea!)

@Andrea, she does, but there are a lot of ... issues? From the bureaucracy of the schools to lack of support from placing organizations to an atomized semi-freelance workforce that has no collective representation and a strained sense of collective identity. It's a hustle, all the time, and there's a lot of feast-or-famine to it. But also, YES, she does like it because the students need it and often respond and don't get what she does from any other source.

Dayffid:

Andrea - Thanks! yes I will definitely email you. I don't have a lot of teaching experience but I think its something I would probably enjoy, and also not really something I was aware of before.
