Handy, that's a charitable assessment in my book. They made me want to gouge my own eyes out. (Rogue One excepted, Julie). And hey, why not take an actor of the stature of Max von Sydow and use him for about three minutes? Grrrr.

haha, movies v books time for a sec. my last experience was with the movie Savages. after reading the Don Winslow novel and hearing he would be involved with the making of the movie, i was stoked. went to see it as soon as it came out. became increasingly incensed that the characters were not portrayed well. and near the end of the movie, in the denement of the bloody story, they just went a completely different direction. i actually exclaimed loudly, "you've got to be fucking kidding me."... time passes, the movie is released to streaming. i decide to watch it *again* just to make sure. this is how good the book is. what a great story. same thing happens. long story, short... i try not to watch movies of books i love.

David (in London):

A friend of mine told me about the guy who promoted Daevid Allen in the UK years ago taking him to a rave in Liverpool in the early 1990s to give him a flavour of the 'modern psychedelic culture'. It was packed, and when he turned his back to talk to someone, he looked back and Allen was gone. Then he noticed the entire club turning to face the same direction, and Allen had clambered up on top of this podium thing and was 'conducting' the whole club, hundreds of MDMA-enhanced ravers. They didn't know who he was, but they recognised a psychedelic leader when they saw one.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm

I'm glad you bailed that early, Julie! I think I read three before I finally asked myself what the hell was wrong with me. I wish I'd bailed on the show after three years, too, once it came along.

@3:23 Julie: you might like them! Very theathrical stuff (Klaus Nomi & Sparks come to mind), that Associates' 1982 album 'Sulk' which I have. A very odd (ignoring the original chord changes quite a bit) of 'Gloomy Sunday'. Didn't remember one-time Cure bass player Michael Dempsey is on that album, and did not know John Murphy is there too (his CV was/is a bit of a who's who of "certain type of music" SPK, Whitehouse, Death In June etc.)

I used to visit concerts on the MS Stubnitz while moored in Amsterdam harbor. Fantastic place. And old East-German fishery vessel with a stage in the freezer. (That was basically everything below deck). Great 'dead' acoustics as no walls were straight.

When I saw Faust in the mid 1990s, they started the gig in complete darkness, before turning on some massive air-blowing fans and emptying bags of wet leaves in front of them, turning the place into a maelstrom of madness. I got a massive wet horse-chestnut leaf in the face and it was like being attacked by the face-hugger in Alien. By the time the lights came up, the audience were in absolute disarray.

She will eat honey, now (it's a far as she goes), but used to be a pescadorian when I first met her. There are veggie stocks available. (and boullion cubes that are veggie).

I was a veggie for years until grad school, and it was too expensive at Hunter in the Upper East Side. Now, I cook veggie, if an option, but I eat crappy stuff when broke (like now), or I eat meat when it's some dish I've never tried before.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I used to say 'less killing still filling' - but the vegans made sure the world knows how awful the egg & dairy industries are...
I gave up animals one by one some time ago now. First swine - then cows. I thot - chickens are healthy. Then they told about how they're raised - which is the absolute worst... Ate seafood a good while still - & they shamed me outta that. Started with cholesterol & additive concerns - my own health. Now I feel it's about humanitarianism & such - & was always about environmental impact. That matters...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...So I do think it's good to have as little impact as possible - but the fact is you literally can't wipe yer butt without impact. It took a few decades for vegan products to catch up with animal-based (especially when it comes to baking - remember how bad vegan desserts used to be?) - but by now you can easily find stuff at par or better than the usual milk/butter substrate, if you know where to look
Avatar 6:50pm

If you ever driven past an industrial chicken "farm", you know how bad their conditions are. Same w/ industrial pork farms. Beef farms don't seem as bad (unless to go to the Plains), until you see the killing floors *cue Troy McClure, "don't worry Billy, it's more of grating then a floor"*)

eating with compassion is also very pricey. i am ridiculously privileged to be near farmers who raise food. and i can buy direct from them. but damn its costly and not sustainable for a large population. so, yeah, need to hop on the plant-based band-wagon. :)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& frankly when I was starving in the pandemic year I took charity - & was offered some remade meals w/ meat - & there they were, dead already - & I took them. I wasn't paying for people to do that - in fact the opposite ! & I wasn't gonna make a habit of it.
So - I was already hungry - but the rush of consuming meat was quite a thing! It's obviously the complete protein - but also blood iron & minerals & b-vitamins... But pretty quickly I got that 'clogged up' feeling that I'd like to avoid...
Cost is one reason I still eat eggs & dairy, I'd say. I'm not sure beans & rice cost more than beef & bacon - but I'll concede that somewhat...
ngh that's another thing: Just because it's not an animal doesn't make it the best thing to eat - simple enuff...
