I just got news my cousin has died.
(She dated Ray Davis in the sixties!)
  3:19pm Mark R:

You're on this comments board all the time Julie, I don't know what you're talking about. Is Joy Division goth? I sorta think so, on accounta the singer hung himself.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Handy Haversack:

Very sorry to hear, Stanley. Solidarity.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Julie:

oh no Stanley, I'm so sorry to hear that. Hiya Mark! Yeah Joy Division fits

My condolences, Stanley.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Julie:

hiya WR. Yeah Mark it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

digging this John Cale
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:26pm David (in London):

Handy, Stanley, WR, james, rich, Cha Cha. Evening all.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm David (in London):

Julie, don't know if Gloria Mundi are on your gothdar, but they are sometimes credited with being the first ever goth band in the UK. Bauhaus were a post-punk band till they played with GM at the Marquee and then revised their approach considerably. Their stuff still sounds amazing, too.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:30pm David (in London):

Stanley, so sorry to hear that sir. A doff o' the hat to her.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Cale from this era is among the greatest stuff ever.
Avatar 3:30pm Sylvia:

Hello Julie and radio friends, I'm beat so just saying hi, I'll listen to the show tomorrow on the archives, have fun

@Stanley sorry for your loss :(
Avatar 3:32pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:29 David (in London): gotta admit I have never heard of them let alone known they had an impact on Bauhaus - so thanks for telling us about them, I need to check them out ASAP.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:34pm chris in the redwoods:

hi, David (iL), agreed about early Bauhaus. also thinking early Cure, the Singles... i dunno goth so much, and figure all my selections would already be selected or be naiive by comparison. have not heard Gloria Mundi, for instance. thanks for the tip.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Handy Haversack:

OK, back soon. Need a few supplies.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Julie:

yeah Im gonna try to get the staples in, Cure, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Sisters.. I think I have some Gloria Mundi will have to look!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm chris in the redwoods:

i went on a Peter Murphy bender for awhile, back in the 90s, but i'm not sure i like his music so much anymore.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Julie:

I never really got into him, strangely enough
Avatar 3:44pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Peter Murphy's solo career is a mystery to me - I loved Dali' Car (him & Japan's Mick Karn) though.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:45pm David (in London):

Cha Cha, I second that emotion. Dali's Car was a brilliantly left field for both of them.
Avatar 3:46pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

The Chameleons! It never ceases to amaze me how they never made it "big", for the sake of a better expression. I mean they do deserve a lot more attention. Thanks for playing this, Julie! It's one of my dearest vinyls.
  3:46pm miles of middle texas:

I'm secretly listening. But I heard these Chameleons and have to stop and say , hi Julie. Thanks for the selections. Hi everyone else too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm drowsy:

I was typing but then @photocopy said it well! Cheers everyone!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Julie:

hiya Miles! Yes I think you got me into them, Cha Cha so thank you!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Julie:

hiya drowsy!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Julie:

drowsy = me MOST of the time lately
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

nice song. I don't want to think anymore! that's what she's saying in Russian.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm David (in London):

Here's a favourite Gloria Mundi for later if anyone wants to give it an ear. 1977!! That's insane:
en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Julie:

Ryan you speak Russian?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm David (in London):

Agree that The Chameleons should have been bigger.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Julie & dark ones.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Julie:

hi Ken!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Stanley:

Hi David - haha Gloria Mundi. I think I've already told you I used to do flyers for them and hang out.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Julie:

oh that's awesome!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Stanley:

Alien Sex Fiend are one of my favourite goth outfits but I don't think back then they were considered goth.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Julie:

oh yes they definitely fit
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm David (in London):

The Specimen, too. Saw them on the same bill as ASF several times.

Stanley, I never miss an opportunity to big up GM! We must discuss it further at some point over a pint or three...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

@Julie Yes, I am a Russian teacher at a university.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Ryansterlingvirtue:

@stanley ASF were on the original Gothic Rock compilation, I'd say that qualifies them.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm chris in the redwoods:

i'm sure if you were my prof, Ryan, i would remember more Russian than i do now. took a few semesters at uni. :)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Stanley:

David - I look forward to that.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Julie:

Batastrophe is a hell of a great name for an album
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Julie:

aww charles grodin passed. hell of an actor.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm chris in the redwoods:

super funny guy. 86. good run, RIP.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Grodin was great. Especially in Clifford
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:16pm David (in London):

I never understood why Toyah seemed to generate such vitriol. She is a great British rock eccentric and deserves to be treated as such.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

The King Crimson group on FB I belong to had to lock down comments on those lockdown lunch videos. I met Toyah twice and she was amazingly gracious.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Julie:

When I interviewed her all those years ago I got a phone call asking me to stop playing her.
Avatar 4:19pm HyperDose:

Hey Julie!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:19pm David (in London):

If Kate Bush had sung this, people would be rhapsodising over it.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Julie:

hiya Hyperdose!
Avatar 4:20pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:18 Julie: I don't know the circumstances but i personally would find this a bit creepy. The caller misunderstood the term 'freeform radio' for sure.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Ditto ChaCha. What kind of person does this?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Julie:

well they wanted more freeform and I was playing so much of one person, although it wasn't like it was the whole show
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Fripp did extort me - made me buy Toyah’s “Ophelia’s Shadow” album in exchange for his autographing my copy of Discipline.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Julie:

haha that's so funny.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Handy Haversack:

Well, that took longer than expected. HBD, Toyah!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:24pm David (in London):

You might say this is Blur ten years earlier.
Avatar 4:24pm HyperDose:

Ooh Birthday Massacre, nice. I saw you played Kill Hannah last week. Hope you enjoyed the album!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Julie:

yes, thank you!

1992 or 3 at Tower Records NYC. Record release appearance/signing in store for Robert and Toyah’s Sunday All Over The World album. Attended by Robert, Toyah, a dozen Crafty Guitarist Fripp disciples, my friend Andy, and me.
  4:27pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey hyper, Julie, dil, handy, et al
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Julie:

Nice! So envious, Rich. They were interviewed at the station I THINK it was Dave Mandl who hosted them.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

They must have been disappointed that nearly nobody came out for them, but they were so great to spend time with.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm David (in London):

Hey HyperDose.
Rich - nice to have seen that!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Julie:

Discogs managed to separate solo Toyah from Toyah the band.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

@David (4:31) I was just lucky to have dropped into Tower a few days before the appearance and noticed the flyer. Had to fake illness and leave work. Was 2 pm on a Tuesday - I guess release day.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Bill Rieflin was another tragic loss over the past year or so.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:42pm David (in London):

Rich, you faked illness and left early to catch it? Hats off sir. Bonus points to you!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

I was scared I would get caught. Was a dumb kid and actually felt bad.

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Julie:

is the solo stuff good?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:12pm David (in London):

Cha Cha, Fourth Draw Down is a favie of mine. The later stuff gets a little bland musically, but even then, his vocals are incredible.
Avatar 5:12pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

This is quite good post-punk of its time, the lyrics on the other hand.... (Above The Ruins)
Avatar 5:14pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@5:12 David (in London): I love the vocals, so over the top dramatic and yet not ridiculous but absolutely fascinating

Ohhhh I love this!

Huh, we have never been there, Julie. We usually go to Karaoke Duet in Koreatown, 35th btw. 5th and 6th.

HyperDose, my "Borderline" and "Magic Man" are crowd favorites, and my "Wish You Were Here" has literally terrified passers by.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm northguineahills:

Actually, had an interview this morning for a job I want. They prefer me to come in person w/ socially distancing rules in place, but it's 180 km away, and I don't have a car, but they said they can Zoom it.

@Handy: That's the place my partner's friends used to drag me to. I went for the K-town cuisine (beforehand), and the soju (I have to be properly blitzed If I'm going to do karaoke.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:48pm David (in London):

Right, gotta split now. Thanks Julie. Night groovers.
Will join in for some of the fun on Saturgoth.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Julie:

Night David! NGH that's great, how did it go?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, Julie, private rooms. What we usually do (did ... ?) is do the "marathon" on a weekend day. It's $15 per person to book the room for up to seven hours! So we invite everyone and go from like 1 PM to 8 PM! Usually the first hour is just me and Kate singing sad songs about alcohol to each other. "Tom Traubert's Blues." "Joey." That kind of thing.

David, I once made the mistake of thinking Pulp's "Common People" would find a working-class sense of fellow feeling when we were at an extremely rural roadhouse karaoke session on the Fourth of July in western Michigan. I was greeted with a "Welcome to America" when I finished. So I thinks to myself, well, everyone loves classic rock.

Rush did not land with that crowd either.

Night, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Scott67:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Julie:

two things I hate at karaoke, Jim Steinman songs (too long) and white wall street types trying to rap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm northguineahills:

@Handy: I don't think I've done karaoke before 1am over there(we once stayed in a room until 5:30 am.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Julie:

Sid Gold's is a piano bar, it's feels like real singing so that's fun
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Julie:

Yes Julie! I lucked out and found a dreamy place in Bayonne. Was going for a 2br to have an office, but one of the corner penthouse units (1 of 4 with a balcony) was open. I move on Thursday!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Julie:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:00pm B R M:

Oh I am so happy to hear OG 4AD material tonight... Thanks for this Julie!
Avatar 6:00pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@5:48 Handy Haversack: Heh! At least you were not looking for trouble on purpose. Your rural karaoke incident reminded me of yours truly deliberately pissing off local redneck barflies of my small home village by dedicating the '3 songs for 10 Finnish Marks'-option of the local bar's jukebox to Nirvana's Endless Nameless, played three times in a row. They did not like it the first time very much to say the least. By the third time the song started playing, both the drinkers and bar staff wanted the jukebox's power to be disconnected.
Avatar 6:01pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

And happy birthday Doctorjazz!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Scott67:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm B R M:

HIS NAME IS ALIVE- so, I grew up in Michigan in the 1980's (c/o 89) an was in college at the University of Michigan in 1990 and let me tell you, it felt LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE that this band was from Livonia, MI (a suburb of Detroit...) the idea that this was being made just down the road was MINDBLOWING. Heroes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm northguineahills:

ahhh, the first HNIA album. Warren Defever would evetually take the band to an indie R&B direction. And he did remixes in every genre....
Avatar 6:06pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Oh the days when the vinyls in the 4AD section of, say Notting Hill's Music & Video Exchange were actually - affordable... no such luck with Pale Saints' 'In Ribbons' for instance nowadays, yikes.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Julie:

new vinyl prices are crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm northguineahills:

By the time I finished uni, Ann Arbor and East Lansing (and all places in b/tn) were hotbeds of new music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm northguineahills:

@ B R M:: in NYC, 1/4 of my friends were from the aforementioned towns, or Wayne County.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Handy Haversack:

Cha Cha (@6:00), ha! I understand entirely!

When I was in grad school in Ann Arbor, 1997-99, it seemed like the only music around was white-boy blues bands. Depressing.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Julie:

there's an actual place called Wayne County?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:10pm B R M:

@northguineshills - ha! At The University of Michigan everyone was from NYC! 🤣
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Julie:

well probably several..but of course I think of the singer
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Handy Haversack:

Home of Wayne State University!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Will check out the rest of the show on archives. Cheers, all! Thanks for the show (and the Toyah), Julie.
Avatar 6:11pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:07 Julie: yes, new vinyls are expensive and frustratingly often not of the best imaginable quality. I seem to remember around early 00s that 4AD vinyls were quite cheap (in the UK at least) as the music itself was not too fashionable?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Julie:

see ya, Rich!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm B R M:

I picked this INSIDES record up at Record Store Day a few years back... was a long-coveted record for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm northguineahills:

Wayne County is the county that encompasses Detroit and Livonia....
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Handy Haversack:

Julie, was it you who did the 4AD cover-art retrospective show a year or two back ... ? Yeesh, my memory is blown!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Julie:

I like Ann Arbor, Detroit less so
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Julie:

Handy that was Meghan, but she and I did a 4AD show together on UWP years back
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm B R M:

oh man... Victorialand!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Handy Haversack:

Ah, maybe that's what I'm thinking of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm northguineahills:

Detroit does have one of the best techno/house fests in the US.(in the summer).
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Julie:

Yeah that 4AD show was on the mothership so we're talking pre 2015
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Handy Haversack:

I saw some decent larger shows in Detroit. Portishead, Jane's Addiction, Shane MacGowan and the Popes.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Julie:

UTP or UWTP whatever letters you wanna use..not UWP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm northguineahills:

@Handy: by the late 90s, there plenty of great indie rock bands and noise bands from Michigan.
Avatar 6:16pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:09 Handy Haversack: it was a surreal experience, as the drinkers i entertained with my "3x1" jukebox selection probably did not rock music, if any music at all (maybe some Finnish tango or other popular Finnish music) only to be treated with a very noisy piece of music.... three times. My home village was one of those places where time literally stood still with very little influence from the outside world.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm B R M:

@Handy @northguineshills The recent SOUTHEAST OF SATURN 90's Michigan Shoegaze comp was a real eye opener for me... so many great bands!
