	12:06pm Gerry from Miami: Bob, way back in the 80s, they had an Arts Festival in connection with the 1984 Olympic Games being held in Los Angeles. It was fabulous and the musical acts were presented at many different venues throughout the area. The event my friends and I grabbed tickets for right away was to see the original Ornette Coleman Quartet performing for the first time in many years. Much to our chagrin, upon arriving at the Orpheum Theater in downtown LA (took us forever to find a parking spot!), there was a sign in the window of the ticket booth that trumpeter Don Cherry had emergency dental surgery that afternoon and would not be playing with the group. Making no last-minute substitution, the trio soldiered on without their bandmate. They were super, but it was still something of a disappointment not to have Mr. Cherry in attendance.
	12:08pm Jeff: (Mr) Bill - I just opened it up last night. Only read one chapter. So far, so good. Ironically, I’ve had the book a couple of years and went to a discussion with Will Birch and Nick Lowe at the Strand when the book was published in 2019. One fringe benefit of the pandemic is that I’ve been reading a lot of books (and listening to lots of records!)

	12:17pm (Mr) Bill: Thanks, Jeff. I picked up Pete Townshend’s autobiography a few years ago and was pretty disappointed. Made me leery of my musical heroes’ self-reporting on their lives.

With no functioning AC, the maintenance staff opened all the side doors of the theater to help us sweating spectators. Yes, Ornette pulled out his white violin and gave the listeners a taste of his rarely-used skill. Higgins and Haden were their usual magnificent selves, of course.
	1:33pm Bob Brainen: Yeah, but they leave behind a lot of great music, so there's that.
	1:35pm Bob Brainen: My Mom said if you have nothing good to say, keep your mouth shut, but, she may have also said...Ornette and his violin, I need like a hole in the head.
	♥ 1:42pm Doug Schulkind: My mom may have said, "The entirety of the being that was Ornette was the art. There is no separating his work on violin from the rest of his playing." Or maybe she didn't.
	1:43pm Gerry from Miami: Bob, I was hoping you would see the subtle sarcasm of my phrasing "rarely used skill" in describing Ornette's "adventures" on violin. Thank God he could play the heck out of the alto sax! A true innovator.

	♥ 1:57pm Doug Schulkind: Yes yes of course. One is not conscripted to experiencing an artist's work through an all-or-nothing filter. But I personally find that, at a certain point with certain artists, I am no longer liking or not liking their work. I am embracing it all from the perspective of "loving the artist means loving their work." If there is a specific piece or performance of theirs that doesn't easily meet my approval, then I fully accept the likely reality that there is something inadequate about me, not the artist.

	12:06pm Gerry from Miami: Bob, way back in the 80s, they had an Arts Festival in connection with the 1984 Olympic Games being held in Los Angeles. It was fabulous and the musical acts were presented at many different venues throughout the area. The event my friends and I grabbed tickets for right away was to see the original Ornette Coleman Quartet performing for the first time in many years. Much to our chagrin, upon arriving at the Orpheum Theater in downtown LA (took us forever to find a parking spot!), there was a sign in the window of the ticket booth that trumpeter Don Cherry had emergency dental surgery that afternoon and would not be playing with the group. Making no last-minute substitution, the trio soldiered on without their bandmate. They were super, but it was still something of a disappointment not to have Mr. Cherry in attendance.
	12:08pm Jeff: (Mr) Bill - I just opened it up last night. Only read one chapter. So far, so good. Ironically, I’ve had the book a couple of years and went to a discussion with Will Birch and Nick Lowe at the Strand when the book was published in 2019. One fringe benefit of the pandemic is that I’ve been reading a lot of books (and listening to lots of records!)

But I personally find that, at a certain point with certain artists, I am no longer liking or not liking their work. I am embracing it all from the perspective of "loving the artist means loving their work." If there is a specific piece or performance of theirs that doesn't easily meet my approval, then I fully accept the likely reality that there is something inadequate about me, not the artist.
