Wonderful track by Karen Mantler! Decades ago, i was the promo director for the New Music Distribution Service, which shared its space with Karen’s loft, previously occupied by her parents, Carla Bley and Michael Mantler, who founded NMDS. It must’ve been odd for Karen to have a non-profit and small warehouse housed in her living space, but she was always cool about it.

Things must have been (and continue to be) deeply odd but also wonderful for Karen Mantler growing up in her particular circumstances. Some of this is humorously reflected in her design for Carla's website: www.wattxtrawatt.com

Well TDK, it was less So.Cal than their fearless leader.

Professor Longhair had a single in 1957 with the b-side Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand. Was he the first to record it? And did he write it or pick it up from somewhere?

@Bob Brainen
I used to see Ray Franks driving the F train in the subway. I sure felt like the baddest motherfucker when a subway train would pull into a station, and the engineer would point to me and wave.

TDK, My older sister brought Decals and the first Ry Cooder album home when she started college. She checked them out of her school library!

Doug, Ha, that's a cool memory & I can picture it. Ray had a great smile.
We played music together for a couple of years, even did a broadcast on FMU!

I support local bookshops, but it's been a strain lately. Amazon is evil, but 3 months and counting (paid upfront) is a long time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
coelacanth∅:

scamazon is also unnecessary. any book you can get from them you can get elsewhere for less money.
(actually most things you can get for less money than from amazon...except when jeff bozo's in the midst of trying to put a small business under. then he lowers the prices)
Avatar 1:21pm
annie:

i use powell's, our local used bookshops are close to worthless when it comes to knowing what they have. run by young people who have no idea what they're doing. and we have some great used book shops, but you're not allowed to browse; you have to be able to tell them WHERE the book might be. a royal AITP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
fred:

Sure, but Amazon is hogging the supply these days so that independent bookstores can order but not get delivered

proud to say I've never made a purchase from Bezos's empire of greed - you can always get what you're looking for elsewhere

I'm ashamed to say I used Amazon this year. Got a gift card at work, since it was already paid I thought I'd use it. I still feel stained somehow though. No books though, my stomach wouldn't stand for that

fred (@131) i used to know someone who worked at starbucks and got coupons for free drinks all the time. she didn't use them since she also drank for free while working so i used them. it only works against them
same with your gift certificates. if you didn't use them it's money in amazon's pocket.
