It was fairly small, they really didn’t have many (if any) records, mainly CDs, but they were playing great music and the guy working there (who I assumed was the owner) was the nicest coolest most knowledgeable record store person I’ve ever met. Happy Birthday to my good friend (and ex-record store manager) Doc Rock!

	11:54am Gerry from Miami: @doctorjazz. And don't forget the talented bunch of kids Charlie and Ruth produced. Had the good fortune of seeing Charlie play live twice. In the 70s as part of the Keith Jarrett Quartet at UCLA's Royce Hall and at the Orpheum Theater as part of the LA Olympic Arts Festival in 1984. It was supposed to be the reunion of the original Ornette Coleman Quartet, but trumpeter Don Cherry had to have emergency dental surgery that day and the band went on as a trio. Still a great concert.

	♥ 12:06pm Franco Twinkie: Gerry! I was at The Orpheum show too! I got my ticket at the last minute and had to sit up in the rafters. Previously, I saw Ornette with Primetime at the Westwood Playhouse. Was Charlie in that band? I can't remember. What I do remember was Jamaaleen Takuma on bass.

	12:09pm Gerry from Miami: Bob, another advantage of living in LA for 37 years was the amazing radio. I had many opportunities to hear Charlie Haden when he would drop in on the "Morning Becomes Eclectic" show hosted by Tom Schnabel on the West Coast's flagship NPR station, KCRW. Charlie would bring records in all genres from his own collection and provide expert commentary. I especially remember how excited he would get when playing Faure's "Requiem." He was one of a kind. RIP, Charlie.

	12:13pm Eugene Bentley: El Chicano a very underated band. A lot of their catalog was destroyed in a fire.
	♥ 12:16pm Franco Twinkie: I remember that too Gerry! Tom could be a bit pedantic, but his show was great. I saw That Dog, the Haden kids band at some club in Signal Hill of all places. And Josh Haden's band Spain at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood. Lastly I saw Petra play with Stan Ridgway at McCabes. She's quite the cut-up.

"The Name Game" was a schoolyard classic all ovee America. But we didn't want to get caught doing certain names. Like Chuck, for instance...............

	♥ 12:22pm doctorjazz: @Franco, There was a Town Hall Ornette concert that's the closest I know of Haden playing with Prime Time. It was at Town Hall, NYC, Ornette presented both his original quartet and Prime time June of 1987 (I was fortunate to be at that concert). Here's a NY Time review of the concert: www.nytimes.com... Speaking of Prime Time, this Prime Time Ellington, with his new bassist, Blanton!

	12:26pm Gerry from Miami: Franco, never got to see any of the Haden kids live, but I bought and played Petra's solo all-vocal version of "The Who Sell Out" many, many times over. And actor/comic/ musician Jack Black married one of the Haden daughters.
	♥ 12:31pm doctorjazz: @Gerry-That Petra Haden album is fantastic! (as are the other Haden albums-she uses a similar technique, recording all the parts herself, on a Movie Theme album). She appeared with Bill Frisell's group called Harmony; they released an album (worth gettting). I got to see them pre-pandemic, NYC's now closed Jazz Standard, what a wonderful group/concert!
	♥ 12:31pm Franco Twinkie: Doc, I know the Primetime show was before the 1984 reunion. It could be a false memory, but I have a strong suspicion Charlie was in the band. The Westwood Playhouse was a small well- lit theater and we were up close. The stage was dressed as a suburban living room!

Town Hall is a mid sized venue, and that was in 1987 (which I wouldn't have remembered, it could have been any time in the 80's or 90s. I googled and found the NY Times review of the concert). Not familiar with that venue, but I'm sure you remember it correctly.

	12:40pm PT: It's only recently that I've realized what an interpreter supreme Richie Havens was. He really makes this song his own.

	12:49pm dan: Fotheringay had such an underrated lineup. Interesting of all was bassist Pat Donaldson who moved to Canada to be the full time member of the Kate and Anna McGarrigle band.

One time a friend and I went to see Warren Zevon at The Roxy in Hollywood. Don came over to our table swirling a mixed drink in a glass. He plopped himself down with a world weary see-it-all expression on his face, made a couple of smart remarks then staggered away.

	1:18pm Jeff: Franco, Nicky Hopkins was such an important figure in both British rock and roll and the US west coast scene. I had a ticket to see him on a double bill w/Nils Lofgren at the Bottom Line in NYC in 1975 (this was the very first show after Springsteen’s legendary 5 night run). Sadly, Nicky was ill and cancelled. Another musical hero of mine, Al Kooper, performed instead.

The price is right...

	11:54am Gerry from Miami: @doctorjazz. And don't forget the talented bunch of kids Charlie and Ruth produced. Had the good fortune of seeing Charlie play live twice. In the 70s as part of the Keith Jarrett Quartet at UCLA's Royce Hall and at the Orpheum Theater as part of the LA Olympic Arts Festival in 1984. It was supposed to be the reunion of the original Ornette Coleman Quartet, but trumpeter Don Cherry had to have emergency dental surgery that day and the band went on as a trio. Still a great concert.

	♥ 12:06pm Franco Twinkie: Gerry! I was at The Orpheum show too! I got my ticket at the last minute and had to sit up in the rafters. Previously, I saw Ornette with Primetime at the Westwood Playhouse. Was Charlie in that band? I can't remember. What I do remember was Jamaaleen Takuma on bass.

	12:09pm Gerry from Miami: Bob, another advantage of living in LA for 37 years was the amazing radio. I had many opportunities to hear Charlie Haden when he would drop in on the "Morning Becomes Eclectic" show hosted by Tom Schnabel on the West Coast's flagship NPR station, KCRW. Charlie would bring records in all genres from his own collection and provide expert commentary. I especially remember how excited he would get when playing Faure's "Requiem." He was one of a kind. RIP, Charlie.

And Josh Haden's band Spain at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood. Lastly I saw Petra play with Stan Ridgway at McCabes. She's quite the cut-up.

It was at Town Hall, NYC, Ornette presented both his original quartet and Prime time June of 1987 (I was fortunate to be at that concert). Here's a NY Time review of the concert: www.nytimes.com... Speaking of Prime Time, this Prime Time Ellington, with his new bassist, Blanton!

	12:26pm Gerry from Miami: Franco, never got to see any of the Haden kids live, but I bought and played Petra's solo all-vocal version of "The Who Sell Out" many, many times over. And actor/comic/ musician Jack Black married one of the Haden daughters.

She appeared with Bill Frisell's group called Harmony; they released an album (worth gettting). I got to see them pre-pandemic, NYC's now closed Jazz Standard, what a wonderful group/concert!
	♥ 12:31pm Franco Twinkie: Doc, I know the Primetime show was before the 1984 reunion. It could be a false memory, but I have a strong suspicion Charlie was in the band. The Westwood Playhouse was a small well- lit theater and we were up close. The stage was dressed as a suburban living room!

Town Hall is a mid sized venue, and that was in 1987 (which I wouldn't have remembered, it could have been any time in the 80's or 90s. I googled and found the NY Times review of the concert). Not familiar with that venue, but I'm sure you remember it correctly.

I had a ticket to see him on a double bill w/Nils Lofgren at the Bottom Line in NYC in 1975 (this was the very first show after Springsteen’s legendary 5 night run). Sadly, Nicky was ill and cancelled. Another musical hero of mine, Al Kooper, performed instead.
