Mornin', Bob! My younger sister introduced me to Spirit on a holiday trip home from college in 1968. She was crazy about "Fresh Garbage" and "Mechanical World." I had only heard "I Got a Line on You" on AM radio. A whole new world opened up after hearing what they were really capable of, not just a Top 40 single.

My friend saw the Spirit/Kinks/Bonzo Dog Band show @ Fillmore East October 69. The mind boggles, if only for Spirit headlining over the Kinks! (In fairness, it was the Kinks' return to the US after their infamous 4-year ban, and they had some serious ground to make up)

Coel; one reason may be, the more freeform-oriented, "progressive," underground" radio formats faded into, or were overwhelmed by, to more commercial "ROCK" radio in the '70s-'90s. A more restricted amount of music.

It was so weird watching them on prime time TV doing 1984 surrounded by kids sitting on the floor. But at that time the networks were trying to be 'with it'. For me, as a kid sitting on the floor at home salivating, it was heaven.

Thanks (Mr) Bill. I sang it as a kid.

The song is based on Psalm 133:1, which is sung with various melodies in synagogues and at Shabbat dinner. There are a few popular melodies but this was an original one. It's the first American Hebrew rock song I ever heard. I'd love to know the story behind it.

Frank Zaatar:

The verse means, "How good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together."

Who sings lead on Jewish? Ferguson or California.

Scott Benarde’s book “Stars Of David” has a chapter on Randy California. It’s a great read.

Didn't Randy California play Silvertone guitars?

Sundazed did fans a great service by finally getting all those tracks from “Model Shop” released in a proper soundtrack. The great lost Spirit album!

@dan: I meant “cringe worthy” in a Cop Rock context: bursting into song mid-scene. I’m sure Umbrellas of Cherbourg would evoke a much different reaction.

Jay Ferguson hss stayed quite active in the music world. I had to do some research when I saw his name repeatedly showing up in the credit roll for TV's NCIS: Los Angeles. He actually won an award for the soundtrack to "The Office." as well. And it turns out he has written the soundtracks for at least 15 feature films, including "A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child." Pretty busy and talented guy.
