Hello Sheila, hello Friday friends. Today was building up day on the Mega Record fair in Utrecht (NL). When I came home they announced the record fair was cancelled because of new Corona measures. Tomorrow we (Platenclub Utrecht) should have presented our new (13th) single, this time by The Flingelbunts. Such a pity

Yay Dionne & PolyStyrene. There's a doublebill !
Well - the WiFis I was stealing here in the building I live in have gone Off again - this last time after having been On for me steadily since late April. I get the impression whomever was providing it has moved out for good...
So - no Interwebz @ home, except when I put my laptop nearest the right window I can sometimes get a somewhat unsteady stream from the Community Center across the street
...otherwise it's sitting outside in front of the Public Library - with my laptop - now in whatever weather NewHampshuh wishes to dish out in November - which is the month that all changes in...
This means less here in Zuckerland (which is mixed in assets & liabilities - as is being here...) - & less music Streaming (more serious!) & less being in the WFMU chat Community (more relevant than the uninitiated can understand ...but even good to give FMU & its servers a break from me...) Tho seems to be working OK this moment !
...Looking into what Interwebz deals there may be for the utterly impoverished (such as I) this late still in the pandemic...

Passion, good.
Care, good.
Strain, drain and damage, obviously no good. I hope by now your experience, wide knowledge, preferences and creative musical curation and presentation vision can adopt a sustainable shape and momentum that are sensible and satisfying. With all those things I just ticked off being so strong, I can't imagine the show will suffer with a more chill and self-leveling approach to doing it. The chops and foundation and central unquenchable care have power you can carry in a bag of your own choosing.
Thank you.

KCRW is doing a retrospective Program on their DJ Deirdre O’Donoghue who 1st brought contempo Alternative music to the station back inteh day - what a personality she was & her struggles even with the KCRW people themselves...

@Handy not too bad,
I slept about twice as much as I normally do, lost my sense of taste and smell for about 8 days, but as I live in a small town, I followed the advice of my epidemiologists buddy.
He told me to double mask up, not touch anything, and not get within 100 feet of anybody, but to walk as much as possible during my quarantine.
Apparently, studies were being released that were saying the sedentary nature of people during their illnesses seemed to be accelerating long-term fatigue.

Hi, Sheila - re: show prep, back in the 90s there was an FMU dj named Laurie S who by her own on-air account simply brought in a stack of records she wanted to play, listened to a cut from one for 30 seconds and put it on the air if it was OK, then proceeded to the next one while the first was playing, and did a fine show entirely that way.

Handy Haversack:

@Sheila, I just wanted to say that I really hear you about both the necessity and fraught difficulty of not killing yourself to produce the thing you love. I went through something similar with the game that I run and have stopped spending hours and hours prepping for it (instead switching down to sporadic just hours). And, really, one of the things that gave me the freedom to do so was listening to my friends/players that they really did enjoy it and enjoyed most of all the times when we/I were just winging it, letting it flow, relying on all the years and background of prep and skill to let it happen rather than trying to think through every possibility in advance. And I have loved doing it more than ever ever since.

So ... I guess my main point is listen to how much your listeners love and respect your craft and your gifts to us. And know that the thousands and thousands of hours you have spent over the years creating this gift are still there crafting and shaping what you do even when you're not forcing yourself to attend to every last detail in advance, even when you're letting yourself have the freedom to relax and just *do*.

And of course all of this backgrounded with just heartfelt thanks for what you (and all the WFMUers!) do, week in and week out. What. A Gift.
