It's called Louis Bar, off the Oude Kerk

That piece from the 1920s makes such conspicuous use of the high hat, people who want to caricature popular music of that era can do so by using the high hat a lot.

Yeah that's it. Maybe Sarah isn't there now. She served for a couple trips I was there

  10:43am
Listener Robert:

The funny thing is how so similar to Dutch veld is German wald, but that means woods! And from a little Wiktionary research I just did, it seems these words for field and forest come from the same root. Since both cultivated plants and trees can have roots, why should they not share them, huh? ;-)

Try adding that last line in bass to "Istanbul" and you'll see how well it would work.

There's a clarinet-heavy version of "Istanbul" that's very heavy on the rubato, an ultra-swing version that I think a lot of people have heard. It would work just as well with that "Byzantium" addition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am

Is it the version on the ultra longue swing comp?

I'm guessing that means, "Rosamunde, ask you nothing."
  11:32am
Listener Robert:

Google Translate agrees exactly with you, Mr. Turkenburg. I mistook "doch" for a 2nd person pronoun, like du/thou/tu.
  11:33am
Listener Robert:

But "Bohmische" is Bohemian as I'd guessed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am
MHLee:

Jerry Garcia covered this song and it's great
  11:37am
Listener Robert:

Ha, "handen" meaning "hands" was easy, but "work-loose"? Google Translate gave "idle hands". Of course, it means the hands are "loose" in the sense of "free", "available".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am
Jan Turkenburg:

in this case it means 'unemployed hands'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am
Jan Turkenburg:

It's a song about poverty and unemployment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am
Jan Turkenburg:

these days it's spelled 'werkeloze" with one o
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
MHLee:

So something like Arbetlose Marsch
  11:41am
Listener Robert:

1934 was the middle of the Great Depression, so it makes sense there'd be commentary on conditions.

Interesting spelling change, because I'd guess "loss" for "loze", so "loss of work", or "lack of work".

chresti:

Hi Feldy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am
Feldy:

Jan, I didn't know your other shows were pre-recorded
  11:47am
Listener Robert:

Regarding progress of spelling, in English we have a fairly consistent progression in compounding over the past two or three centuries. We start with two words, then hyphenate them, and finally eliminate the hyphen. In French they stay at the hyphen stage a very long time, don't compound easily, while in the Germanic and Nordic languages they jump quickly to compound, no hyphenation I'm aware of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am
Jan Turkenburg:

They are prefab rather than pre-recorded. The talking is live, but I usualy prepare a complete mix to fit in exactly one or two hours and talk over it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am
MHLee:

when i was in 2nd grade they made a big deal about the dropping of hyphens in words like ice-cream
  11:50am
Listener Robert:

It bothers me that people in English compound words when they don't need to, when it doesn't assist the meaning. They also get confused about the reasons for compounding, so for instance "setup" should be used ONLY as a noun, never as a way of saying the VERB phrase "set up". Just a peeve of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am
MHLee:

Cannot bothers me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am
Rich in Washington:

That drives me nuts too, Listener Robert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am
Jan Turkenburg:

we have similar issues in Dutch
  11:52am
Listener Robert:

"Cannot" has its uses. In a noisy environment it can be heard clearer than "can't" to distinguish it from "can". Of course there's also the entirely different word "cant".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am
MHLee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am
MHLee:

@Listener Robert but why is cannot not can not?
  11:53am
Listener Robert:

Worse is "alot". Why confuse "a lot" with "allot"?
  11:54am
Listener Robert:

It's subtle, MHLee. "Can not" means it's possible to not do something. "Cannot" means it's impossible to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
