Dictators! I have this CD Bloodbrothers - so good!!!

Gerry from Miami:

DENNY, I think the Coca Cola corporation owns the Rock 'n' Soul stream. I heard Mr. Manitoba mention the drink in the lyric to that tune. And BUNNY, the Artificial Intelligence robot, drops tons of Coke ads when he is running the channel. What gives? WFMU is non-commercial, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
Candy-O'67:

The first time I saw the Dictators was at The Shake Down in Vegas in the early 2000's. I actually only discovered them when I was at that festival! I immediately bought the CD they had and was an instant fan! I've seen them plenty of times since then. One such time was when I was still drinking and saw them on a trip back to Houston when I still lived in CA around that time, they played at a small venue Rudyards, and we stayed after hours and partied with the band at the bar! I hardly remember that part, though - three sheets to the wind! haha!!!
Avatar 2:16pm
LesleyK:

That's cool Candy. I never saw them play. But spent some time at the bar Manitoba that he used to have in east village.
  2:16pm
Gerry from Miami:

@Candy-O'67. You were such a wild child back then!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
Candy-O'67:

Wow, can't believe you never saw them, Lesley! I've been to Manitoba's! I went once with my girlfriend from Houston who was visiting NY with me and met a friend from New Jersey there when we were visiting my sis when she lived there in the early 2000's :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
Candy-O'67:

Gerry, totally!!! haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Dennis Diken:

first saw Dictators in '76 at Club 92 (I think it was called?) on E4th St. we became fast friends w HDM, Top Ten and AS. they were kinda untouchable as a live band!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
Candy-O'67:

That's so cool you knew them and saw them back then, Dennis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm

Hi Mom!
  2:29pm
Myron Feld:

Hello Dennis and all Denizens! Sorry I’m late. Dennis, that was the 82 Club you saw the Dictators at — I was there as well. Saw them many, many times back then — definitely one of my top bands.
  2:29pm
Gerry from Miami:

Yo, MOM WHIG! I'm a fan of Evan "Funk" Davies's show, but I almost always switch over at 2 pm on Wednesdays so I can listen to the full two hours of Denny's program.

WLSClark:

Dennis, perfect bowling alley music!
Hi Candy, Woo, MOM and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Stu Rutherford:

@Gerry & Dennis - Some of the DC5 records feature BOTH Dave Clark & Bobby Graham. Compare the mono & stereo mixes of "Can't You See That She's Mine". The stereo mix features Dave's pedestrian drum track only. The mono mix has both Dave's basic track sweetened with Bobby Graham's fills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Woo:

OK the picture has the answer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Candy-O'67:

There's your answer, Woo - I think! haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Candy-O'67:

Hey Clark!
  2:35pm
Gerry from Miami:

Denny, are we talking about the same band? I have never seen Bobby Graham's name in any profile of the Dave Clark Five. I am totally confused.
  2:36pm
WLSClark:

Stu, whoever wrote and played those drums for the DC5--they did a GREAT job!! haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Dennis Diken:

@Myron Feld - thanks for the clarification - so you & me might have partied back then?! were you there on 7/4/76 when they played til 4am to a largely empty house at 82?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Stu Rutherford:

@Gerry - Bobby Graham was a session musician. That's why no credits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
Dennis Diken:

@Gerry - Bobby played on early Kinks records, Dusty Springfield, Them etc etc
  2:39pm
ike-o:

peace and greetings everyone
  2:39pm
Gerry from Miami:

Ah, I see. Thanks for the info, Stu! Another case of "Hal Blaine-ism." So I guess Dave Clark was not considered to be a great drummer.
Avatar 2:39pm
Reechie:

Dave Clark didn't want you to know about Bobby Graham. That's why you've never seen him credited.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
Dan from Peekskill:

God save the Kinks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm
Dennis Diken:

this Kinks track has Bobby on tubs. Ray discusses his involvement in depth in X-Ray
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm
Woo:

Dave Clark is a mysterious man.
  2:42pm
Gerry from Miami:

@Reechie. And they still won't induct the Monkees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Pop and rock music couldn't have survived without all those great session musicians!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Woo:

Gerry, I was just listening to the Monkees Headquarters today. It's a great injustice that they are not in the RRHOF but we could go on and on about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Dennis Diken:

Bobby Graham played on countless beat era masterpieces, mostly obscure. but that is him on "You Really Got Me" and "All Day And All Of The Night"
  2:46pm
Gerry from Miami:

DENNIS, even at my age, I am still learning new things about the music all us Denizens love.

I was recently watching a clip of Bun E. Carlos talking about drum influences. Regarding Hal Blaine and Bobby Graham, he speaks of discovering that 3 or 4 of his favorite drummers were the same guy!

Bobby Graham was asked to sub for Ringo in Australia in '64 when he had his tonsils removed, but he declined! but I think it was Bobby who recommended Jimmy Nichol

French lesson, DENNY! NEE is pronounced NAY. Means "born." By the way, today is also the birthday of Harrison Ford(80 years old, like McGuinn), Cheech Marin, Cameron Crowe and the "Cube" guy, Erno Rubik!

Gerry from Miami:

When I was young and poor during my college years, I always traveled between home and school by Greyhound Bus Lines. At stops all along the east coast, they always had these awful and overpriced Post House Cafeterias in the stations. But with jukeboxes! It seemed I was forever hearing Wilson Pickett songs, like "99 1/2." But mostly it was "Midnight Hour." The Wicked Mr. Pickett was one popular artist in those long-ago times.

DENNY, extra note on the Bo Diddley Homecoming appearance. The following year we had Dionne Warwick as the featured performer. But she was so drunk, they had to escort her out onto the stage and prop her up at the microphone. She still sang pretty well!

I tried several times to get BUNNY, the resident Artificial Intelligence robot here at the Rock and Soul stream, to play that great Skeeter Davis tune. Never happened. Thanks to you, Denny, for the spin!

Ah, "Tonight!" One of the very best Move songs, and that, as the Velvelettes taught us, is really saying something.

Gerry from Miami:

Everybody knows that Del Shannon was going to be Roy Orbison's replacement in the Traveling Wilburys, right? Unfortunately, he passed away too! Here in 2022, we have also lost George and Tom from that supergroup. Would have loved to hear what Del would have brought to the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
Dennis Diken:

@Gerry from Miami - Del was a fine artist and I think he would've continued to give us good stash!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm

@myron feld - I'd need to research it but I think it was "an all-LA band", might've been Howie Epstein on bass
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Dennis Diken:

@Michael Shelley - thanks, my brother! @Lesley K - THANKS! good luck tomorrow!
  3:56pm
WLSClark:

James Holvay penned a great Brian Hyland song that sounds just like Del singing, but came right at start of Beatlemania in 64. James and Brian wrote while on Dick Clark tour together.
