Sorry for the setback, doctorjazz. I hope that cable arrives pronto. I need to think about replacing my speaker cable, if only because what I have is two long spans of them. But I'm a fan of Dunlavy.

Seeing The Microscopic Septet tomorrow night (with Dave Sewelson). Caught 2 of their sets Sunday, they were great, looking forward to catching their last show for a while.
  11:02pm
Dean:

If this is "post-rock" then I'm post-Mozart.
  11:03pm
Dean:

If musicians these days had the slightest imagination they'd opt for post-Telemann.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

  11:04pm
Dean:

On the nose, doctorjazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Sam Segal:

Hahaha, I don't know if that Parallax Ensemble would be considered post-rock, even though it was co-led by David Grubbs who was/is definitely post-rock in other contexts (Gastr del Sol, for example). But it seemed like Parallax Ensemble leaned more toward the contemporary jazz side than post-rock. Other co-leader of the group was Ken Vandermark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Sam Segal:

I think the documentary was about post-rock, but the soundtrack wasn't totally post-rock...sort of confusing.

Still getting used to the new work schedule. Used to start late on Thursdays, could sleep late. Now have to get up 6:30 (on the other hand, I used to get home 10-11 PM on Thursdays, have gotten Thursday evening back).
Hey Coela!
Really like Craig Taborn, been listening a lot to a recent album of his recently.
  11:08pm
Dean:

I love Vandermark's work, and I suppose I'm not surprised that he fiddled in the "post-rock" area, but I don't quite get the moniker. It smells of The Wire to me, and I am extremely skeptical of anything The Wire has to offer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Sam Segal:

Have to brag that Craig Taborn hails from my home state of Minnesota.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Sam Segal:

What do you find dubious about The Wire, Dean?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
doctorjazz:

rw-if the horseshoe fits...
  11:22pm
Dean:

I'll abbreviate. First, it's mostly bullshit opinionating. I have no reason to trust any of the commentators. Second, the writing is dreadfully bad. Ben Watson is a great example: unbearably overwrought blathering of no real import. Third, there is no sense of rigorous selection. They just write about anything and choose to promote it. Wire Tapper is a great example. So much of it is ridiculously pointless. Fourth, their heroes simply aren't interesting. Cat Power? Bonnie "Prince" Billy? Tortoise? The Sea and Cake? These artists can't survive without independent promotion. (I'd argue Can, too, is pointless, but they do survive.)
  11:22pm
rw:

Not to change the subject, but we did some photos at the Skirball Museum in LA the other day. Evidently there's a new holiday called Tzedek?
  11:24pm
Dean:

Short story shorter: Wire is cult-like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
coelacanth∅:

rw that's a whinny

  11:26pm
Dean:

Saw Uri Caine at the Skirball in LA with Don Byron and, I think, Jim Black.
  11:26pm
rw:

Or maybe I was given some misinformation or misunderstood... I'm not seeing anything on the interweb.

Thank you coelacanth. You're too kind.
  11:27pm
rw:

Dean, we were saying they should get Zorn.
  11:28pm
Dean:

Well, sure, a great venue for him. I'd be surprised to learn that he hasn't already appeared there. I saw Caine, whew, more than 20 years ago?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
coelacanth∅:

Sam, was "zest" your bed music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
doctorjazz:

That's a great band, Dean, Caine, Byron, Black, seen them in many configurations.
Zorn is doing another matinee at the Village Vanguard with his New Masada, but I'll be away that Sunday.
OK, gonna try for some beauty sleep, thanks Sam, laters all!
  11:32pm
Dean:

Was Greg Cohen playing bass? Man, what an ensemble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

Ike:

Been listening and enjoying. And BTW, I posted a lot of passionate disdain in the early days of the comments board! Maybe I should bring that back!

...or not.
  11:44pm
Dean:

I have a strong anti-Chicago bias in many respects. On a recent trip, not too many years ago, the city brought me to tears. It is among the most boring cities I've ever visited. Likewise, the music bores me these days. Not counting Vandermark, whom I adore, I can't fathom what musicians like Sam Prekop have to offer me. Their work exudes nonchalance and apathy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Sam Segal:

Your disdain is always welcome here, Ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

My distain for Chicago only extends as far as the band.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
WR:

Whoa, very active comments. Will be reading and digging on it while listening to the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Ike:

Well, if you *want* disdain, you'll have to play something that's actually bad! Got any Eagles-related projects or shitty Dead bootlegs?
  11:51pm
Dean:

Those first four albums, Franco...not bad. Not bad at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm

Shitty Dead bootlegs aren't out of the question, Ike. I won't treat this as a formal request though.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am
