Jan Turkenburg:

Hi MHLee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am
fred:

Good afternoon Jan and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am
Jan Turkenburg:

hello fred!
  10:12am
kreightoven:

Hi Jan, enjoying the show this morning. How was lunch with your lady friend over the weekend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi kreightoven! It was good. It was her restaurant so that was to be expected. We also had some business to discuss. She wanted my old web domain, I used as a music teacher, for her restaurant: meneer-jan.nl
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am
Jan Turkenburg:

She had asked me before, but at that time I was still using the site for workshops and such. Now I've decided that I'm not going to teach music at all anymore, I was reqady to give up the long cherished domain. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Jan Turkenburg:

So actually from today on it's hers and people don't accidentally end up on my site and I don't have to forward the odd wrongly adressed reservation requests anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
MHLee:

i was wandering through old sites and uploads of yours yesterday on a whim
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am
Jan Turkenburg:

I hope you could see the tree from the forrests.. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am
Jan Turkenburg:

whoops... player glitch... that hardly ever happens...
  10:25am
kreightoven:

Mr. Jan. Great url.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am
MHLee:

I think originally I was trying to see if your bike cover was kicking around out there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am
Jan Turkenburg:

I don't think I ever posted it anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am
MHLee:

Nick Mason encored with it last Friday... sung by the dude from Spandau Ballet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am
Jan Turkenburg:

But I vaguely remember sending it to Otis for a show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am
Jan Turkenburg:

You were at a Nick Mason concert?
  10:27am
kreightoven:

Haaa, what a surprise it would be to reserve music lessons instead of a table at a restaurant 😳😳
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am
MHLee:

Yes, Friday night which was why I wasn't kicking around the chat in the evenings or able to cover Rich again. Actually saw 4 bands last week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am
Jan Turkenburg:

It's also a coincidence that I happened to be one of the regulars of the cafe she also owns. So when she was starting up the restaurant she ended up at my site and was like... wait a minute... i know this guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am
MHLee:

Jan, I used to teach elementary school students music as part of my scholarship in college
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am
MHLee:

I don't know if I've mentioned that before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am
Jan Turkenburg:

yes, you did. We're collegues in more than one way :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am
Jan Turkenburg:

I mainly taught at elementary schools and music school, but I conducted choirs of all ages.
  10:42am
kreightoven:

Strange!! And serendipitous o.O
I was able to snag my first name as a domain for awhile. It’s now defunct, but from time to time I think about paying the annual fee again. Mostly for the novelty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am
MHLee:

I did age 5-10 roughly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
MHLee:

I've considered registering one for the otherworld but it's a pain to archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am
Jan Turkenburg:

But after having had a private student this spring I came to the conclusion that my heart isn't in it anymore; my teaching days are over, except perhaps for radio shows with an educational touch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
MHLee:

Alberta Hunter has a great 1989 comeback album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
Jan Turkenburg:

I encountered it in preparation for this show, haven't had the chance to listen though.

Mr. Oxford:

Hello Jan, MHLee, Fred and others! Just came back home from work and joining in. Fantastic (Japanese?) song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
David (in London):

Afternoon Jan and assembled vintage groovers: Mason, fred, kreightoven.
Avatar 10:52am
Mr Fab:

Jan! And fans! Lovely to tune in to the dulcet tones of xylophones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Mr. Oxford! Yes, Japanese.
Hi David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
David (in London):

Mr Oxford. Mr Fab. Ahoy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hey Mr Fab!
Avatar 10:53am
Mr. Oxford:

Ahoy David! Hey Mr. Fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am
MHLee:

Hi Fab and David and Mr Oxford
Avatar 11:03am
Mr Fab:

I heard “rock n roll” in that song, too. Thought I might have imagined it.
Avatar 11:04am
Mr Fab:

Harry Lauder: the Father of Rock n Roll
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, he definitely said it. I relistened it while prepping the episode
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am
Jan Turkenburg:

That's probably Teddy on Sax as well here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
MHLee:

Quite an opening on this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Jan Turkenburg:

There are vids out where you can see him switching the instruments. He also used to whistle the melody while playing xylophone solos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, I almost fell off of my chair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
David (in London):

Same here. I had the kettle boiling noisily and decided I must have imagined him saying 'rock and roll'. Hats off to Harry.
Avatar 11:19am
Mr. Oxford:

Never knew "O Sole Mio" was adapted in Dutch language. This makes me wonder how many other language covers of "O Sole Mio" exist. I know there is one in English sung by Elvis Presley of all people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
StringOFperils:

Good morning, evening, Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am
David (in London):

Don't know if it was the same elsewhere, but for an entire generation of Brits, 'O Sole Mio' means only one thing: an ice cream. It became synonymous with a particular brand - altogether now...

"Just one Cornetto / give it to me / delicious ice cream / from Italy..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am
Feldy:

Nut Cracker! Hi Jan and the rest O' the gang
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am
David (in London):

String, Feldy, ahoy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Feldy!

WR:

My bald head doesn't shine.
Avatar 11:27am
Mr Fab:

Oh yeah Mr Oxford, “It’s Now or Never” was huge for Elvis. Groovy little Latin rock arrangement. the King really got to show off his vocal chops on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am
Feldy:

I absolutely love this type of conversation/battle song
Avatar 11:28am
Mr. Oxford:

@David, I just looked up the commercial you were referring to! Never knew about it. I'm going to sing "O Sole Mio" during my shower singing sessions with those lyrics from now on.
  Swag For Life Member 11:29am
WR:

David (in London), Feldy, Mr Oxford, StringOFperils, MHLee, Mr Fab, Fred, kreightoven, and host Jan, I'm pleased to join your assembly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
MHLee:

Elvis actually thrived with some of the more creative arrangements
Avatar 11:30am
Mr. Oxford:

@Mr Fab, yep that's the one! I remember having a 30 #1 Elvis singles collection, think it was called Elv1s. It had "It's Now or Never". Elvis does sound great on that one. Just as good as he did on some of his early gospel albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
David (in London):

Mr Oxford, please send me a recording immediately. And next time you're in London, I'll treat you to a Cornetto.
Avatar 11:32am
Mr. Oxford:

@WR pleased to have you here sir!
Avatar 11:33am
Mr. Oxford:

@David, believe me you don't want to hear the atrocity that would be me singing O Sole Cornetto. But I will take you up on that Cornetto if I'm ever in London.
  Swag For Life Member 11:38am
WR:

Jan, perhaps this helps, this Scholte is linked on rateyourmusic.com to the song you played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi WR! I'll check that
  Swag For Life Member 11:40am
WR:

Ah, forgot the links"
rateyourmusic.com...

rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
Jan Turkenburg:

According to that page it would be Bob Scholte after all, which would fit the year, but I'm still not sure who the female singer is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am
Jan Turkenburg:

And I finally found a picture of Bobby Klein that fits the recording year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am
Jan Turkenburg:

Sofar I had only found pictures from the 70s and 80s. This one is from a newspaper from 1954 reviewing his debut as a yodeler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am
Feldy:

WR, I am pleased to have you join us
