Yeah. Unfortunately, this is the last episode of Box 13. Fortunately, with 52 episodes and evergreen content, this show was syndicated for YEARS after stopped making new episodes. In the 80's, when I was first listening to radio, Box 13 was still in rotation. They would just start over again, with episode one, after the last one would air. You wouldn't get a repeat for a full year.

I'm not sure if it was always on, uninterrupted. But it was one of the first radio dramas I heard, after I got my radio when I was 10. And it was on for quite some time, afterwards.

You still hear a fair amount of old radio dramas on AM radio, or in small towns. It's easy-to-find content, and can help fill the hours of a young station, or one that has trouble filling a full schedule.

I got a radio that had a built in cassette deck. It could record the radio, or the air through a built in mic. And I got a box, that could hold 10 cassettes, and I got several tapes from my mom. with the promise I could copy some of her albums. That was a big birthday: I got my own room, too! (To listen to the radio as loud as I wanted.)

The english channels here have them but there's very few of those on the french ones. I only listened to a few english ones here and there before Dimestore.

I do feel a little silly about the "Bird Brain Beer" jokes, as I have come to discover that biologists no longer consider birds "dim." (It's a long story... there's a NOVA episode about it.) Suffice it to say: while the phrase "bird-brained" is still in use, it's not accurate, anymore.

Regardless... I was looking for bird phrases, and... that one is quite common.

I do like the idea of detectives showing up in other detective-ish stories. Every detective story I've written usually has the "too many detectives" trope.

I can't think of an animal that's actually dim. I guess you'll have to go with Human Brain Beer.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Charles @9:22
Ha! I guess biologists used to think birds were dim, and that their brains were too small. Essentially: they were more instinct than thought and problem solving. However, most modern science has discovered that this was mostly based on some very biased observations, by a few biologists who were not really fond of birds.

So, Box 13 fans: How should the show have "ended"? This is really just another installment, really. And even this ending suggests that there will be more next week... but, really, only re-runs.

So: what should have happened?
  9:32pm
Charles:

Dan stops procrastinating and starts writing his book about all the stuff that happened to him in the last year.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Austin Rich:

I always wanted Suzy to have gotten the bug for solving mysteries, and in reality... Dan's books aren't selling that well, anyway.

I wanted her to suggest that they start a real detective business together, inspired by the other Dick they ran into.

Setting up shop in that kid's tree house. Lower rent.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Charles @9:32
Yeah. The idea that he's writing books about all his adventures is never actually shown, only implied. I like the idea that Dan is secretly rich, sold a couple books, but has had writers block, so the Box 13 is to try and help give him something to do until he has a new idea.

↳ Song: ""Russian Roulette"" by "Bold Venture"
Bold Venture, like Box 13, doesn't really have stories connected to the time of year. Regardless, this episode aired a couple days before the Fourth of July, so I suspect listeners had that on their minds while they were listening.

Slate's line about not wanting another girl around, because he already has Sailor puts into perspective the backstory that Sailor is the daughter of an old friend of his, and he has promised to take care of Sailor... and has also fallen for her. The idea that he has to "take care of another girl" is mostly a laugh line; Slate takes care of Sailor as much as she takes care of him.

My biggest complaint about Bold Venture: while the boat is the namesake of the show, they often go many episodes without having any stories connected to the boat. This one sticks out because the boat actually figures into the story.

At the end of the 19th Century, "Wireless" was the hot new technology that all the nerds were into, in the same way that "internet" was the hot new technology at the end of the 20th Century.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Austin Rich:

Both "wireless" / radio and the internet were "connecting" technologies, that allowed people to communicate in new ways, and in ways that transformed our culture, too.
👻 Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
WR:

Many years ago I read the Erik Barnouw History of Broadcasting trilogy and another book, Mass Communication, I think, that was expanded to become Tube of Plenty. Very much shaped my view of mass media. Interesting to me to hear the interview and dramazation bits Burns pulled together for the series you are excerpting.

↳ WR @10:25
Hmmmm. I should track those down. I'm always curious about what different people have to say about radio.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Austin Rich:

While we did roll out X-Minus One last week, that episode is considered the pilot, and this is considered the "first episode" of the show. It's unclear if the pilot aired before this episode did - probably not - but the pilot episode DID air later in the run, when they needed a filler between episodes. For our purposes here, I put the pilot first... but original listeners in 1955 heard THIS episode first.

"No Contact" was used twice during the Dimension X run of the series, but this version is with different actors in different roles, with different sound FX, and some scenes are slightly different.

WR:

↳ Austin Rich @10:26
The volume 1 and 2 will be of primary interest for radio. 1 being the development of the technology. Volume 2 the growth of networks. Volume 3 is more focused on the advent of TV.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Austin Rich:

↳ WR @10:37
Well, TV is still pretty interesting. Though, I loose interest in that subject quickly.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Austin Rich:

"No Contact" was from a story by George Lefferts & Ernest Kinoy, and the script was by George Lefferts. Usually, that pair "adapted" well known short stories into radio scripts, so the fact that this is their original story is probably why it gets re-used so often. Still, both of these men were sci-fi writers in their own right. However, they were better known for their radio work.

First man to the moon in 1962? Interesting prediction...

↳ Austin Rich @10:42
The idea that they would be sending men on interstellar trips by 1987... as originally predicted in 1950... seems pretty rapid to me. When I think about the future now, from 2023, I still think interstellar travel like this is... quite a ways away.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Austin Rich:

The SFX of that "condition red" alarm... the "Ar-oooga" sound... is really the main thing that has aged poorly in this show.
👻 Swag For Life Member 10:51pm

I remember us hearing this story before. They used a script from the previous series? Funny, I cant remember the out come. I'm always like that.
