Thanks everyone for joining me on my annual summer "break," where I run movies on the radio, and take a break from my usual programming. (Three years in a row, now!) This first week we are featuring one of my favorite actors, Edward G. Robinson!

This summer, I picked out all shows and stories from the late 30's. There's a lot of 30's radio available to listen to, but often, when people think of the "Golden Age of Radio," they often think of the 40's and 50's. While it was harder to record shows for preservation in the 30's, the stuff we do have from this era is very interesting. So consider these shows a nice slice of late 30's American culture.

While I wouldn't say that either of these movies are my favorite Robinson films, I do find parts of the story and performances in these two to be very interesting.

For my fave Robinson films, I would say it's a tie with "Double Indemnity" or "Scarlet Street." But I do like "Key Largo," even though he's not the lead.

As an experiment, I used some algorithms to take apart this episode of "Lux Radio Theater," so I could do a little production on the "vocal" and "music" tracks. I didn't do a lot, outside of some basic EQ. But I did increase the signal of the "vocal" track by a small amount, as the music was a little overpowering at times as it was broadcast. It's a subtle difference, but I think this version sounds better than the archived one.

Double Indemnity is as much about Edward G. and Fred MacM.'s near father-son relationship as the complicated scheme!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Austin Rich:

In the movie, you get the impression that the story is a critique of prisons, and seems to suggest we should questions some aspects of legal systems. I think that message is a little muddied in this version, and I'm not sure Beverly Roberts is a good in this role as Constance Cummings is.

I love that you can hear the local announcer say, "KMX, Los Angeles. The Voice of Hollywood," on this recording. This show was syndicated nationally, but local stations would make announcements like that. Often, we don't get to hear that kind of thing, as we often hear recordings derived from transcription discs. I would love to know the provenance of this recording, as it suggests that it was recorded at home, by a listener.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Austin Rich:

I was trying to imagine some podcast doing something like this now. Hour-long movie adaptations, with current actors and stars. Seems completely bonkers, but it used to happen.

I would love to hear the current schlocky action movies adapted to some radio show by current up-and-coming stars.

It is funny to hear Cecil B. DeMille do these hosting bits. He is clearly not a performer, and doesn't seem to know what to do or say on the mic. He clearly wants to be the host, and he is clearly trying. But he is, without a doubt, not a performer, and it shows.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Austin Rich:

Similar to what I did with "The Criminal Code," I used some digital audio tools to separate the music and the dialog, and then did some EQing on the tracks to get them to sound a little better. I also separated the Music and the Dialog by a couple db, to help the dialog stand out a little better. I think it sounds a little more clear than in the original broadcast.

I like the use of “choice” as an adjective. Don’t hear that too much if at all anymore
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm

Bette Davis plays "Fluff" in the film. While I don't mind this performance, Bette Davis and Robinson together are just fantastic on screen.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Austin Rich:

Joan Bennett - who plays Fluff in this production - is still a great actor, and you can hear the rapport that her and Robinson have together, even through the radio. A few years later, Robinson and Bennett would act together in "Scarlet Street," where they are both great.

I have no idea who the actor is that is playing the "Kid" in this production, I would say he's a bit of a downgrade from the film version. Kid Galahad is probably the least charismatic voice actor in this show, which is not great for the character the story is named after.

What I like about this story is that this was the "Christmas" episode of Lux Radio Theater in 1937. (The show one week later would be the 26th.) So listeners at home had Christmas on their minds as they listened to this story.

If you listen closely after Kate sings “Both my partners act like actors. You are Bogart. He is George Raft. That leaves Cagney and me”, you can hear an EGR imitator murmur “What about Edward G.?"
