Great tip, mic_a. I've forwarded it to a professor friend of mine who teaches about countercultures, inter alia. And I just forwarded this marvelous quote from Marx, Capital v.1, to another friend. It's from the beginning of ch.15, incl. a footnote: "John Stuart Mill says in his Principles of Political Economy: 'It is questionable if all the mechanical inventions yet made have lightened the day's toil of any human being.'" Note: "Mill should have said, 'of any human being not fed by other people's labour,' for there is no doubt that machinery has greatly increased the number of distinguished idlers."

Summer 1982 -- a weekday afternoon -- a friend and I are driving through a creepy business park zone on an outer perimeter of Philly (he's doing some errands for his mother's business). WDAS on the radio, as was often the case, and this new song comes on. Our jaws were quickly dropped and ears wide open. "This... this... this has EVERYthing!" "Even Kraftwerk!!" The dj segued both sides, and it seemed like it went on for miles and miles. Back home that night, I hurried out to my local record store, and praise Tommy Boy! -- they had it. It's good to remember how amazing it can be to hear a real ground-breaking record.
  8:14pm
Dean:

Some of this is reminiscent of the great Nik Pascal, a.k.a. Nik Rejcavik (sp. more or less), whose albums featured these bonkers covers with a big flourescent sticker reading, DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS IF YOU ARE STONED.
