@Joe McG; That'd be nice. I loves this old stuff. That's too bad about Hunter, but she would have been well over 100 by now, so not surprising.

The Spirit of Clay Pigeon:

David Bowie loves Fanny.
  12:46am
fxo:

  12:47am
Julie:

He did say that but I can't remember the context of it. This music makes me wanna dance.
  12:48am
YEs:

I'm picturing the Scottish guy from the simpsons humping air to this song right now
  12:51am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Joe and everybody!
I'm ecstatic about hearing Fanny! I love everything I've heard from them!

@YEs: AND, he'll be joining in, playing the melody line on his bagpipes.
  12:53am
cheri:

joe & julie,,,this is my final comment tonight,,but i will still listen on the radio,, also thnx for the company see you all soon!! night joe & julie,,
  12:53am
Matt from Springfield:

One time I was searching the WFMU schedule page on the Internet Archive "Wayback Machine", and I discovered that before the Best Show they had an ALTERNATING Antique Phonograph and Surface Noise--is that what Julie was talking about?
  12:54am
Joe McG:

@Matt: Yes, my old show was a bi-weekly 78 show.
  12:56am
Zarnigor:

I like PERIHAN'S song great.......
  12:57am
Julie:

ooh this is groovy
  12:57am
Matt from Springfield:

That's kinda cool. One 78 show, then another! But I like your variety and length of the current show, so it's a win-win for everyone!

(Does Tom like having a 78 show before him, or did he just adapt to the transition long ago with his surface noise intro?)
  1:00am
R I S K Y!:

TELL EM ALL BOUT IT JOE!
  1:02am
Matt from Springfield:

Even I was WTFing over this one, but it's actually quite a cultured Boogie song...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manneken_Pis
(You'll probably recognize the picture when you see it!)
  1:03am
cheri:

ohhhh i forgot just one more thing---joe & julie you two are two of greatest dee jays on fmu,, good night for real!!

  1:14am
Matt from Springfield:

This Eloise is kickass! Clav AND Moog keyboards!!
  1:18am
T-Zero:

@Joe: Do you and EFD ever team up and do a combined show?
  1:19am
Joe McG:

@T: Do you think we flow along a similar current?
  1:21am
Julie:

is Jah Thomas Jay Thomas's reggae persona?
  1:22am
Joe McG:

I don't know who Jay Thomas is!
  1:23am
T-Zero:

@Joe: Not necessarily to say your two shows are alike, but sort of sometimes. Having listened to you both, it was more just thinking it would be an interesting team up.
  1:24am
Julie:

Joe I KNEW You were gonna say that...longtime DJ and tv actor
  1:24am
Joe McG:

I'll have to invite him over! :)
  1:25am
Julie:

He is CALI now but when I first came northeast he was a NY morning drive time guy
  1:25am
Matt from Springfield:

I liked the Jay Thomas though (from what I could make out, it just seemed to be a social commentary about a "water shortage in all the parishes"...unless there was some innuendo in "the schoolgirls can't wash their _?_" ;)
  1:25am
cheri:

julie i just sent you an e-mail
  1:25am
Julie:

I think EFD would be a good single file guest, he plays a lot of 45's
  1:26am
Matt from Springfield:

This is a fantastic, upbeat "Here Comes My Baby"!
Remember also this was an early Cat Stevens composition.
  1:26am
Julie:

Cheri once and for all, yes it is sad when anyone dies young, Jeannette Jacobs or otherwise, okay?
  1:27am
Joe McG:

@Julie: The problem is that Evan has 10 million more 45s than I do, and often much better ones.
  1:28am
Julie:

@Joe I do think it'd be an interesting pair-up though.
  1:32am
12539:

Who sets up the marathon tag teams?
  1:33am
T-Zero:

I've not been a listener long enough to have gone through one of the marathons.
  1:33am
Julie:

not to be confused with the Swedish electronic conglomerate Zeitgeist
  1:34am
Julie:

Marathon time is fun..and crazy...and fun..and crazy
  1:35am
Matt from Springfield:

FANNY!! Touch Me! Wild Thing! LONG LIVE BRIT GLAM ROCK!
  1:35am
12539:

Marathon time is the only time I enjoy being asked for money on a repeated basis.
  1:39am
Joe McG:

@Matt: You're thinking of Fancy, Matt! This is Fanny from California, US of A.
  1:40am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey, they're American! I thought you had said they were a Brit band one time, and ah, "Fancy", that's my prob! I got excited over nothin' :-)
But no matter--this is good stuff!
  1:44am
Julie:

Fancy had a penthouse pet. What's not to like.
  1:47am
Julie:

They have a lot of hair http://www.nydailynews.com/img/2011/08/12/450x323-alg_millingtons.jpg
  1:49am
T-Zero:

what about Goldie & the Gingerbreads? i didn't know anything about them or Fanny. ;(
  1:49am
Joe McG:

I think they were also in the Wall St. Journal a couple of days ago. Help me, researchers!
  1:49am
coelacanth:

Some marathons i was shit poor & still was compelled to give. Usually fun & funny...A couple years ago"they"decided to pair djs up without their consent...That DIDN'T work! I remember Stan's co host acted like a manic schoolboy- just didn't get it! ruined the vibe! A few shows, too there was power struggle between host & co-host...oh well Live & learn.
  1:50am
Julie:

WSJ? Can we buy stock in them?
  1:50am
Julie:

Goldie & The G's really WERE the first major all-girl band
  1:52am
Matt from Springfield:

I'm seeing many pictures of the Millingtons with really long hair. They're Filipina but they kinda look Native American as they age.
  1:53am
Joe McG:

They were famous for their long hair. The record company hassled the drummer for cutting her hair when she got tired of wearing it long. Or so I've read!
  1:55am
12539:

@Joe: WSJ says "subscriber content only" the second time I view the article.

http://tinyurl.com/3bs2x5c
  1:55am
Joe McG:

@Julie: With all due respect to Genya Ravan, I think Fanny really rocked much harder than the Gingerbreads.
  1:56am
Joe McG:

@12539: Oh, that's a drag! Figures, it's the WSJ.
  1:58am
T-Zero:

@Joe: That's why I was asking. I wasn't sure, but was thinking Fanny was more "punk"y and the Gingerbreads more "popish". But I truly had no idea.
  1:59am
12539:

WSJ agrees with Joe, "Fanny, by contrast, eschewed pop and folk for the rugged, metal sound of their male contemporaries. Much of their gutsy attack was the result of June Millington's powerful vocals and searing guitar solos."
  1:59am
Joe McG:

@T-Z: I'd say that's pretty accurate, although Goldie was known a lot for soul music since Goldie could really sing soul music like hell.
  2:00am
Joe McG:

I'll play a little Fanny afterwards so y'all get a taste.
  2:01am
Julie:

The Clinger Sisters all played their own instruments too, but they didn't really rock till the late 60s. And where do the Pleasure Seekers fit in? Time wise though, G&G were the first all-girl ones recording I think.
  2:02am
Julie:

I wonder if one could find enough all-girl bands to fill a whole show.
  2:03am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: I'm sure of it. Even specializing in a decade, like 60s girl groups, you could prob. fit enough diversity to fill a whole show.
  2:04am
12539:

@Julie: maybe you will answer that for us musically someday.
  2:04am
Julie:

I find it interesting that even now an all-girl band who plays their own instruments is still seen as a novelty
  2:05am
coelacanth:

This set is quickly solidifying, but i have to return for the archive. Thank you Joe.Gnight,all.
  2:05am
Julie:

really nice set Joe thanks
  2:06am
Joe McG:

G'night, coelacanth! Glad you dug it, Julie!
  2:11am
Matt from Springfield:

Speak of the Gingerbreads...
  2:24am
T-Zero:

This is a great interview.
  2:29am
12539:

Thanks Joe and Guests.
  2:29am
Joe McG:

Really nice people, and we only brushed the surface of the 8 million cool stories they have to tell. Can't wait for June's autobiography!
  2:30am
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah, amazing interview! And set, thanks for bringing Fanny in!

Wow, and it's the Clapton-Harrison "Badge" that they were talking about earlier.
  2:31am
Matt from Springfield:

Since they have a best hits CD on Rhino, I oughta get me one of those!
  2:32am
T-Zero:

@Joe: What I liked about it was both you and the Millingtons seemed to enjoy talking together. So many interviews you hear, they're ok, but it's like Oh, I have an obligation to do this, or ask this, but seem distant and not as personal.
  2:32am
Word Up:

It's the phattest shit and deserves to be rekindled.
  2:34am
Joe McG:

The Millingtons are really warm people, so I have to say, it was easy to talk to them. I was afraid of the interview being too long to listen to, but I could've talked to them for hours.
  2:36am
T-Zero:

@Held my attention, and their enthusiasm was contagious.
  2:39am
Joe McG:

Glad to hear it, T-Zero! Agree totally, Word Up!
  2:41am
T-Zero:

@Joe: Yep yep yep, good job. Usually after about the first 5 or 10 minutes, I'm like ok, this is what everyone says and I fade out.
  2:47am
T-Zero:

@Joe: Not to impose, but could you select something by Gingerbreads that you think illustrates the difference between Fanny and the Gingerbreads?
  2:49am
Julie:

hey the show's almost over
  2:50am
Chop Scott:

JOE!
Excellent, as always---Thank you!
  2:51am
T-Zero:

Ah. True. This is one of the shows that goes by too quickly
  2:51am
Joe McG:

Thanks, Chop Scott! Nice to "see" you!
  2:52am
Brian in UK:

Late good morning, Joe. Great to see live music at this time.
  2:53am
T-Zero:

@Joe: Like night and day...

Thanks
  2:54am
Joe McG:

@Brian: Thought I'd dip my toe in and see how I liked it. I like it.
  2:54am
Matt from Springfield:

Goldie & The Gingerbreads was pretty good--thanks! Now, try to fit a single of theirs into the Single File! 'Twould go great with other 60s soul...
  2:55am
Matt from Springfield:

VampiSoul! Another label that virtually guarantees the material will be great!
  2:56am
Joe McG:

Couldn't agree more, Matt. Those guys put out killer stuff.
  2:56am
T-Zero:

@Joe: Take care. Thanks for another great show.
  2:58am
Joe McG:

All the best, T-Zero. Thanks, everybody, for listening, as always! Have a great week!
  3:00am
Matt from Springfield:

Sadly this show is once again coming to an end--but it really was totally awesome! Try to get other live sets in when you can, I love your interviewing!

Have a great night everyone!
  10:58pm
?:

@Matt, no no no, almost 18 hours later the show is still going strong :)
Great show Joe!!
