Robin Eisgrau:

Mike! I looove that you played "Date With A Vampire Girl"! One of my favorite teenage memories is of being in my friend Roger's car with that song blasting on the car radio and my friend Dave standing through the moonroof waving his arms around singing along as we zoomed down Queens Blvd. Late on a Friday night. Thanks for making me remember that.Have a very happy new year!

Michael Des Barres played the valet in the "smelly car" episode of Seinfeld. The earliest thing I saw him in was "To Sir With Love".
  3:40pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Des Barres was also on WKRP as a punk roccker in band Scum of the Earth.
Before that, he had Detective.
  3:40pm

Caryn:

  3:58pm
Jasperodus:

I thought it was just 11 there -- my dad usually calls at midnight and I was expecting a call around 5pm. He's in Hyvinkaa.
  4:00pm
Caryn:

OMG, Jasperodus, you're right! False alarm, everyone! That's what happens when you call your mom an hour early to wish her a happy new year, your entire schedule goes out the window. Retry in an hour!
  4:03pm
frenchee:

ha hahahahaha, please do so, Caryn! Cheers to yr. mama
  4:05pm
Caryn:

I also blame the local tv for starting their New Year's broadcast (usually a 15 minute affair) at 10:55 this year, instead of the usual 11:55. Have no clue why they're adding an hour this year, but it's not helping me keep track of what time it is.
  4:05pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Mike and all the listeners. Happy new year everyone.
  4:06pm
Caryn:

Good thing I'm an hour off though. Forgot to put the drinks in the fridge, so at least I can now toast in the New Year with a cold drink rather than a lukewarm one.
  4:06pm
Frank:

Yeah Twin Guns! One of the best releases from the past year.
  4:07pm
Jasperodus:

Kylmaa olvia vai samppakaljaa?
  4:08pm
Caryn:

Actually just some cola, Jasperodus. I'm a total freak of nature: a teetotalling Finn.
  4:10pm
Jasperodus:

Kippis!
  4:11pm
Caryn:

Kippis ja kulaus! Ja perseet olalle!
  4:15pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Not old enough to have seen Human Switchboard??
  4:15pm
Caryn:

Aha! Hour added because Helsinki is the 2012 Design Capital... I suppose the 3D lightshow might be interesting, but really, a full hour of lame music is not needed for this.
  4:19pm
NateTheK's Woman:

I approve.
  4:20pm
kat330:

2012's gotta be great since we get an extra day of it.
  4:23pm
PB:

What came first, this or Hush, because they are basically the same song.
  4:24pm
Sonny Rickles:

I think this 5 Americans song sounds more like A Day In The Life.
  4:24pm
frenchee:

LOL, Nate the K's Woman!
  4:24pm
Fuzzy:

Which came first, Hush or A Day In The Life?
  4:25pm
Tom:

QMS!! The best psychedelic band ever! Thanks and Happy New Year!!
  4:26pm
Jasperodus:

I though the chorus sounded like the bridge from "White Room."
  4:26pm
Frank:

Gurus!
  4:27pm
PB:

Oh well, there is a long and storied history of "borrowing" in rock n roll.
  4:28pm
David Shortell:

I love that Quicksilver song. Do you know it's featured in the extended DVD version of D.A. Pennebraker's "Monterey Pop"? Whoever QMS's singer was during that fest, he left the group before they recorded their first album.
  4:29pm
Harry j:

pls help ,,, stuck in albuquerque 4 new years ,, alls we got is tex-mex & dinosaur rock 4 new years shows ...waaa pity me ...
  4:30pm
kat330:

Is braking for pennies like stopping on a dime?
  4:30pm
Sonny Rickles:

Yeah that QMS clip on the DVD is really good. Those guys definitely had the longest hair there!!
  4:31pm
frenchee:

Harry J, you say "Tex-Mex" and "dinosaur rock" like it's a bad thing....
  4:31pm
PB:

What Jefferson Airplane songs are added on the extended version?
  4:32pm
Harry j:

not 24/7 365
  4:32pm
Caryn:

Are the Tex-Mex & dinosaur rock one combined show or 2 different ones? Because a combo might be interesting...
  4:33pm
Jasperodus:

If you brake for pennies, they go 'pop.'
  4:34pm
Harry j:

yes ,,,slayer meets the Al Hurricane quartet
  4:34pm
Sonny Rickles:

"Somebody To Love" only extra JA song on the Outtakes dvd
  4:35pm
Tom:

Will Murray quit QMS before the 1st album, but can be seen on the Monterey Pop Festival DVD box set. The Festival was held in June '67. Gary Duncan sings the lead on "Dino's Song" in the clip.
  4:42pm
David Shortell:

Big Brother may have been more hirsute, Sonny!
  4:44pm
kat330:

@David S: Hey, I wasn't being snarky, just wordplay.
  4:45pm
Caryn:

Okay, take 2. 15 minutes to go!
  4:49pm
PB:

The 1st 2 Oasis albums were great but it went rapidly downhill after that.
  4:51pm
Caryn:

My brother was a huge Oasis fan, but I had a problem with their songs. I couldn't tell one intro from another. All the damn same. Also, the Gallaghers posing as tough rockers while kissing Blair's ass were annoying. At least people like Damon & Justine avoided face-time with Blair.
  4:59pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Would luv to hear "People in Me"!
  4:59pm
kat330:

Phone call from Finland right on cue. Hauskaa uutta vuotta, Caryn et al!
  5:00pm
Caryn:

Happy New Year, everyone!
  5:01pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Brothers Chris and Anth Griffiths from the Liverpool band The Real People, wrote half of the songs on Oasis first Album.
  5:02pm
Caryn:

2012 so far: dark, noisy, and friggin' cold. Of course I am partying naked, so that might explain part of the cold...
  5:04pm
David Shortell:

I remember that Sean Bonniwell show at the Village Underground in November 2001 (my first time back in NY after the attacks). The Fuzztones backed him up.
  5:05pm
drewo:

I thought you were going to play Split Enz. Enjoying the show Mike, Happy Holidays.
  5:10pm
Jasperodus:

Didn't Fuzztones back Screamin' Jay Hawkins at some shows, too? They never delivered like they should have after the Lysergic lp...
  5:13pm
suzi pq:

so this is the last new years EVER i guess huh ?
  5:14pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Happy New Year:) Mike, WFMU & all listeners!!!
  5:15pm
Caryn:

@suzi: or some Mayans will pop up next fall going "Wanna buy the new calendar? The old one's nearly full."
  5:16pm
suzi pq:

hee hee yeah ,, i get so mixed up as to exactly when its all sposed to end
  5:19pm
Mike Sin:

Hey folks, thanks again for listening and commenting!
  5:21pm
kat330:

I've always wondered why do a cover that is so identical in every aspect to the original? That's more karaoke.
  5:21pm
Mike Sin:

yes, Japerodus, the fuzztones backed Screamin' Jay in the 80s and an album was released.
  5:23pm
frenchee:

I am in geek heaven!
  5:23pm
PB:

@kat, I totally agree. Covers are generally only interesting when they are changed up significantly from the original. For what it's worth I always thought the original of Got to Get You Into My Life would have been much better without the cheesy horns.
  5:24pm
Mike Sin:

sorry, meant to type JaSperodus
  5:24pm
kat330:

Yeah, write after I wrote my comment, I noticed the piano substitute for the horns.
  5:26pm
kat330:

Ooops "right" not "write"! (Celebrating Finn New Year's with too much bubbly, I suspect).
  5:27pm
Jasperodus:

Thanks Mike! I bet I saw the album in the bins somewhere back in the day, but never picked it out. Any good? If they played "Ashes" it couldn't have been bad.
  5:30pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

"I Still Care" is my new fave!
  5:35pm
Caryn:

Gotta say, if the "original" version hasn't even been released yet, it is easy to end up with a similar version, since you are basing it just on the notes (and the opinion of the producer, who happens to be on the "original" version). Thus, the Rebel Rousers have a great excuse for not making a particularly different sounding cover.
  5:36pm
Jervix:

Pretty durn cool to crank on my radio and hear the effervescent Liz French!
  5:38pm
kat330:

@Caryn: Still the ear has nothing very unique in a "faithful" cover. Perhaps the producer is the one at fault in this instance.
  5:41pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

I saw the Bon! They were great. They threw in the 45 when I sprung for the CD.
  5:43pm
frenchee:

HI Jervix, happy New Year!
  5:44pm
kat330:

'Laissez les bon temps rouler!
  5:45pm
PB:

As a transplanted Canuck I was pleasantly surprised at how good that Bon track was, most Canadian bands are beyond awful.
  5:47pm
frenchee:

Jumpy, what's shakin' in Brooklyn for NYE?
  5:48pm
Jervix:

Happy New Yeah!
  5:51pm
efd:

That CD by The Bon is available on CD Baby, just by the way! (Although it's easier to find if you search for the album title, Static Electricity.)

I receive no compensation from the band, just spreading the word!
  5:51pm
Jasperodus:

Ugly Ducklings were a great canadian garage band from back in the day!
  5:51pm
Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

French: free soul gig at Teddy's with Boogaloo Omnibus & Girlsoul!
  5:54pm
Mike Sin:

awesome guitar solo by STU the "R" Rutherford on this Brimstones cut
  5:56pm
