@ pss: got trapped in an unexpected downpour of Biblical proportions myself, Friday night here in NY.
Otherwise, how are you and the missus?

@ Holly T: I 've heard that The Americans is well-done and very imaginative, I know that one of the creators was involved in this kind of intelligence himself.

I'm learning a piece by Mendessohn and it's part of the "Songs without words" series. So it's a song and a piece?

The Reverend Toad-Eater bass solo was ambitious but fell flat for me. I felt his tone caused muddy chording, and his right hand technique was WAY too heavy-handed. Solo bass needs even clearer articulation than ensemble bass playing, there's a bunch of stuff happening here and most of what I hear is right-hand string noise... but maybe that's his point. I'm harsh on solo bass -- but that's because I believe basses should be used 3-5 at a time!
The Pyramid Vritra was also bass-centric. I like electronic effects gadgets on bass. Yes, I have lots of opinions about bass, so people assume I don't like it, but in fact the opposite is true. I think it's very difficult for non-musicians to understand how musicians listen to music because all the additional layers. If you don't play bass, you're not going to have the muscle memory that's so completely intertwined with the sounds, and although everyone hears the notes, non-musicians miss the "playing along" part. The "inner logic" of a song is physically tied to the basic limitations of which notes you can reach from the current fingering position. Musicians notice when the inner workings are "different" than what they achieve with their hands. Anyhow, I like bass.
Ahhh, Tull... Good on you, but unfair bashing the 80's era disc with just "you don't want to hear that one". An Uber-Prog friend of mine considers Passion Play to be Tull's greatest work! I'd love to hear you two go at it while I drink beer and laugh at you both!
Definitely enjoyed the piano sonata. During my road trip I listened to some NPR classical music affiliate doing its fundraiser and they were pimping their CD premium which was all pretty mainstream/pedestrian. There's about 300 years from the baroque to the romantic period but they're still playing the same 20 Mozart songs! No matter, the huge dynamic range of classical music makes car listening futile anyhow.
Your show seems even shorter when it's during the day than when it's during dinner. I don't care if you didn't play the closing CD you meant to play, I like the piano stuff! And bass! And drums! I like lots of instruments!
