@rw. Thanks. Yeah, I don't know enough about hip-hop, but plenty of other people at FMU do.
  10:14pm
rw:

No, I wasn't suggesting you shift your focus. Just that I think some of the most interesting music being created these days in that realm. I don't really know that much about the genre myself. I did go to an Odd Future show in Paris a couple years ago with my daughter. It was pretty fun. Reminded me of punk rock shows in the early '80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This Georgian thing is really interesting: it's like an early 80s thing - a few years behind - unlike the Greek 80s stuff on the last BodegaPop show that was totally on it (evoked Cure & Teardrop Explodes & such) - but otherwise, very together...

Agreed, Georgian is gorgeous. There is a somewhat similar language script (Dai, I think) on some buildings and signs in Yunnan Province, China.

Carmichael:

Dave, you are mellowing my harsh. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@rw: I think HipHop was more interesting (&Punk-like, in the best sense...) - early on - when it was more Street & informing about Urban realities that were not being communicated *anywhere* else
- & sonically more interesting before they came down *hard* on Samplers
(...also: after it succeeded commercially, it became all about 'bling')
...so - I'm *not* like Sinatra ragging on Rock because it's not Swing
- *but* - it's (Rap) not Where & When I'm from: I didn't grow up dreaming of having a turntable & two microphones - it was Guitar, yerknow
...& I *still* don't find myself thinking :
- 'I must *Own* this HipHop music'
- as much as I'm a junkie for all sounds...I guess I fully recognize it, w/out embracing it - even decades later...

rw, I don’t completely agree with RRNOV63, but to me I just can’t get into the headspace of modern hip hop. To qualify that I also don’t understand the appeal of “Green Day” or even modern Bruce Springsteen.

Davy Graham is credited - no? - w/ popularizing the DADGAD tuning used by guitarists in every Irish Pub in the world; it only goes back as far as (& *to*) *him* ! - is my understanding...
  11:03pm
rw:

The head space of modern hip-hop is for the most part kind of weird I agree. Lots of misogyny and annoying bragging. As with any genre not all of it is worth while. Just saying there seem to be people putting out some pretty interesting and progressive ideas/sounds/juxtapositions too.
  11:04pm
Carmichael:

Mike, didnt SNL ask you about pouring milk in a snare drum? Now THATS a good story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm

Sonny Clark sounds great. What an incredible, sadly short career. You know he's somethin' if Zorn did memorials to him!

@Eric: Yeah, he died at a horribly young age.

JakeGould:

rw, the other issue is everything is so over processed nowadays I lose respect. Not just with modern hip hop but modern pop in general.
  11:37pm
JakeGould:

But enough of that. I really like this current track.
  11:39pm
rw:

JG: I was just thinking the same thing.
  11:42pm
rw:

And not to dwell, but on the other side, it CAN be kind of disturbing to be driving around in the car with your 15 year old daughter blasting songs where a dude brags about how many bitches he's got hanging off his dick.
  11:42pm
JakeGould:

rw, FWIW it’s also the reason I used to like U2 pre-“Achtung Baby” but can’t stand what they have become nowadays.
  11:44pm
JakeGould:

“…a dude brags about how many bitches he's got hanging off his dick.” Have you really listened to AC/DC or Led Zeppelin lyrics? Pretty bad as well. And I like both groups.
  11:49pm
rw:

Yeah, I know. I guess that's why our parent's generation seemed a little concerned too. Thankfully my daughter has moved past most of that now. She still listens to hip-hop but it's of a more complex/sophisticated variety. Not so many songs about "Gettin' drunk in the club".
  11:50pm
JakeGould:

I think what disturbs me more is the focus on being aspirational to the point of idiocy. It’s one thing about someone singing about parties & partying. It’s another to brag about bottle service. THAT gets me riled up.
  11:54pm
