A quaff is simply a hairstyle that emphasizes the forelock. In Jame Joyce's Ulysses the dandy Blazes Boylan is seen walking down the street and another character says contemptuously, "There's Boylan, airing his quaff."

I was in the bathroom, but it occurred to me too what a pun "quaff" would be on "coif". When it's short for "coiffure", "coif" can be a noun, though I don't recall "quaff" as the noun form of "drink", but why not? In English we can do that. What you quaff becomes your quaff. But as a transitive verb in English, coif, back-formed from the noun I think, while in French all the conjugations of coiffer have a double f.

There are people who object, but I love nouning verbs, verbing nouns, & otherwise blurring the parts of speech. It gets really hilarious with "fucking" as ambiguous between an adj. & a present participle.
