Has occurred to me listening to Rob Weisberg's 'Transpacific Sound Paradise' Saturdays here 6-9 P.M.
- that a lot of the true 'Folk' music of the world conveys both gravitas & a deep soul seriousness & determination
- w/ a collective celebration.

(i.e. - these guys are both heavies & communicate fun.)

Hi Dan, been looking forward to this today!

Listener Robert:

Dan, did you say tonight's show was going to "hone in on" a certain style? I 1st hears that phrase 20-25 yrs. ago by Howard Stern, and have yet to figure out whether it's correct. At 1st I took it as conflating "home in" with "horn in", because of the context. But then people said that in honing a blade, you could approach a certain desired edge by degrees, thus "honing in" on it.

Dan Bodah:

@Robert: www.merriam-webster.com...

TL;DR: It's correct, but often taken as incorrect and thus better to avoid in formal contexts.

Dan Bodah:

@RevRabb - yeah, that makes sense, though I wouldn't necessarily generalize to *all* world musicians. Rob definitely bends in that direction when choosing what to play on TSP (one of my favorite WFMU programs). Some of these groups are definitely more "serious" or "heavy" that others. I'm not touching it much tonight, but there's a whole subgenre of Mongolian nationalist stuff that seems deadly serious about bringing back the glory of Genghis Khan.

...& the Tribal traditional collective thing is key to it. It struck me about some Klezmer actually - it's about heavy stuff - but so celebratory too...It moves me.

Listener Robert:

Wow, I'd no idea there was such a discussion of home/hone there, though I might've expected one at alt.usage,english . Thanks.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Nationalism is another thing - reminds me of Barbara Ehrenreich's two books 'Dancing In the Streets' about Collective Joy - & 'Blood Rites' about Collective Violence...
Aim on home - hone your focus - & they happen to be but a phoneme apart...
