Passaic, that's of course not what I mean. The thing is, there's a distinction between someone being a jerk and being a predator. If someone is rude or backward you can set them straight and avoid them. There will always be co-workers you would never have lunch with for a variety of reasons. Someone slipping a drug in your drink...beating you physically, setting up private "Business" meetings in order to rape you, much different. There seems to be no sense of proportion now and people can loose careers without having had a trial. That's what I mean by analogy to McCarthyism.

@MacGuffin right - I'm not sure I quite buy his "alibi". but given the current climate, I'm not surprised he didn't just come out and say, "yeah, I was rather awkwardly and lamely trying to hit on her. And obviously, it didn't come off too well."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
Passaic River Blues:

We live in an at-will employment world (thanks capitalism!). Generally absent a strong employment contract or firing due to discriminatory intent, we all can be fired at any time for basically any reason. One is very rarely entitled to a trial to keep one's job. Yes, there is a difference between jerks and predators; however, the distinction is less forceful when the person on the jerk-monster is one's boss. I don't understand how so many are so angry that women are tired of being forced to endure behavior that ranges from the gross to criminal from people who control their livelihoods. I apologize for being flip before, but I am tired of people shouting "Sex panic!" in response to news about men who proposition their employees or repeatedly make them feel disgusting. I don't care if I seem a scold or a moralist--fuck those guys. ... The comparison to the Satanic Abuse trials and HUAC investigations is inapposite, in my opinion. As to the former, the accusers were literally five year olds and involved criminal investigations by politically motivated DA offices with the full panoply of law enforcement powers. HUAC quite actually made shit up, was entirely cynical, and again enjoyed state power. With this raft of firings, we're talking private actors responding to internally investigated complaints where no criminal penalties attach and, again, the employment law standards are entirely different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
Passaic River Blues:

Dean:

For a contemporary, self-critical take on the McMartin era, see James Kincaid's Erotic Innocence: The Culture of Child Molesting. It's actually quite funny. Kincaid resorts to humor as sublimation of the painful and bizarre stories that occupied the media. I happen to think the outpouring of testimony against men (particularly men in power) is on balance good. There is risk of backlash, naturally, and "my side" won't always win (compare Franken with Moore), but the way many men act toward and talk about women makes many men (as human beings, as partners and associates with women) uncomfortable, too.
