@rbrt interesting. It also implies that most samurai were right handed or dexters. Hence the term dexterous.

  12:30pm rbrt:

@brian yeah!
  12:33pm rbrt:

I really have no idea how Japan's government works, is the emperor just symbolic like queen of england?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm tmoyo:

@rbrt interesting! I didn't know samurai swords were involved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm tmoyo:

Yes, just a symbol.
  12:35pm rbrt:

@tmoyo yeah assuming who ever answered this question is right? lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm tmoyo:

Haha, true Mayuko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Webhamster Henry:

from Reuters:
He is due to step down on April 30, 2019 after spending much of his nearly three decades on Japan's throne seeking to soothe the wounds of World War Two.
His abdication is the first by a Japanese monarch in about two centuries. He will be succeeded by his heir, 57-year old Crown Prince Naruhito.
Once considered divine, Japan's emperor is defined in the post-war constitution as a "symbol of the state and of the unity of the people", but has no political power.
  12:38pm rbrt:

"The constitution provides for a parliamentary system of government and guarantees certain fundamental rights. Under its terms, the Emperor of Japan is "the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people" and exercises a purely ceremonial role without the possession of sovereignty."
  12:39pm rbrt:

oh thanks Henry!...answering my own questions lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm tmoyo:

I think the emperor gives "permission" on important legislations, and also performs sacred shinto rituals.
  12:40pm rbrt:

I'm sure he has some kind of political "influence"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm tmoyo:

Yeah, I think he's quite liberal, but isn't allowed to speak out his personal feelings.
  12:42pm rbrt:

was there ever an "empress"?, seems like Japane is a very male oriented society though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm gloomsday:

well this is all very good and fascinating. so glad i tuned in this morning :) just what my saturday was missing.
  12:45pm rbrt:

oh this is an actual thing "The Imperial Household Agency (宮内庁 Kunai-chō) is an agency of the government of Japan in charge of state matters concerning the Imperial Family"
Avatar 12:46pm fred:

I think Japan had a few empresses, and they came close to changing the succession law until a male grandson of the current emperor was born
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm tmoyo:

Women can't ascend to the throne. The next emperor only has a daughter so there are some talks of making changes, but it seems unlikely that it will actually happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello! Hooray! Howdy!
  12:51pm rbrt:

kings, queens, emperors...archaic systems in a modern world
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

With stem cell technology, I wonder if they'd consider cloning the emperor to create male succession?
Avatar 12:51pm Mayuko:

Suiko was an empress but she's from 6th century, and the actual political leader was more like Shotoku taishi? I spent all my history class sleeping so I don't remember anything.
  12:54pm rbrt:

??? what is going on in this children's song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm listener james from westwood:

LOL at whatever is agitating this guy over the "Sing a Song" chorus!
  12:55pm rbrt:

oh ok wrong track lol! I'm assuming this is Violent Onsen Geisha
Avatar 12:55pm Mayuko:

Children's innocent singing makes me lose it and this is what needs to happen.
Avatar 12:55pm Mayuko:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Webhamster Henry:

More children!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: One of my earliest proofreading jobs for one of my clients was a college textbook on modern Japanese history. I stayed very awake during it (lots was new to me!), but remembering my time as a college student, I'm likely the person who will end up having read it most closely, aside from the author and the copy editor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

Jeez, hoping this guy doesn't go after the Americans with Disabilities Act next!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm coelacanth∅:

i can totally relate to this guy
Avatar 12:57pm fred:

@Mayuko: maybe you could play Junko when that happens. She kinda sounds like a child at times, yet also like that Violent Onsen Geisha guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm coelacanth∅:

haha just saw what he's going on about! Fuck him then!
  12:58pm rbrt:

I need to get this recording and blast it all week lol

Avatar 1:04pm Mayuko:

I actually thought it hilarious that gloomsday said those Akihito's bday songs from 1933 were "just what my saturday was missing" I appreciate WFMU listenership at times like that!
Avatar 1:04pm Mayuko:

Hey northguineahills!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, wow, Blind Idiot God, good choice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm redkayak:

Happy Holidays all :)
  1:12pm rbrt:

same to you redkayak :D
Avatar 1:14pm Mayuko:

@james I probably would have enjoyed modern Japanese history more. In my experience, in elementary school and middle school, we always started from ancient times, and then ran out of time at the end of year, so we would do modern times super briefly. Now that I think, maybe teachers didn't know how to deliver that time period without being political?, I don't understand.
Avatar 1:15pm Mayuko:

Hi, redkayak! Glad to have you here!
Avatar 1:16pm northguineahills:

I got to see Hirohito when he made his balcony appearance New Years 1988. I was maybe 150m away, but I could see him (and had binoculars)
Avatar 1:17pm northguineahills:

@Mayuko: So, like American History classes, where they are lucky to get to WWII (and we have much less written history to cover).
  1:20pm rbrt:

yeah I've had same experience with history in school
Avatar 1:20pm Mayuko:

@northguineahills haha! that's true we at least have more excuses for not getting there in time.
That's funny you saw him! I've never seen any emperor in person!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm redkayak:

@mayuko @rbrt Thanks :)
Avatar 1:26pm northguineahills:

hellos rbrt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm listener james from westwood:

If personality cults and creepy children's choruses are what you're looking for, Station Mgr Ken has played a bit of North Korean music now and again that combines both. Can't recall the title....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: That political aspect of it may be the case. And echoing ngh, my experience was similar—if we started in grammar school with the Pilgrims, we barely made it out of the Depression and into WWII.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Webhamster Henry:

Saturday is so empty on the Drummer stream! Stick around!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

And I for one dig hearing your perspective in addition to the music, so I'm happy to be here for both!
Avatar 1:35pm fred:

So US keeping the emperor indirectly led to an extra hour of this show? Good move!
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

@fred haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Extra Play Vertigo!
Avatar 1:39pm fred:

It's time for me to clicky-star the whole show, and we're only halfway through
  1:40pm Rickwaukee:

After decades have passed, the sins of one's forefathers need to be acknowledged and their true role in history settled - the people / culture who needed their security blanket (pride savers) should have taken to their graves by that point. Thinking about American South as I write this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm listener james from westwood:

Macarthur: "Old soldiers never die, they just listen longer to GTDR on the weekends."
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

It's a wife talking about killing herself and children so that her husband has nothing to worry about while he's away to the frontline of the war.
  1:43pm Rickwaukee:

So soldier receives word of family's suicide and can go through war with an extra spring in his step - maybe just knit him some warm socks?
Avatar 1:44pm fred:

Was that written in 1995 or an older text recorded that year?
  1:45pm Doctorjazz:

Hi all!
  1:50pm P-90:

Merry Christmas Mayuko and Mayukologists!
Avatar 1:51pm Mayuko:

@fred 1995 is the year the compilation came out - the words must have been written around ww2, assuming from the fact that the guy who made the piece famous died in 1949.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm tmoyo:

what a great set!!
  2:03pm rbrt:

water copy was wonderful
Avatar 2:08pm fred:

@rbrt: I agree wholeheartedly

I know Akihito is considered an ichthyology expert.
  2:15pm rbrt:

ohhh they're named after him
Avatar 2:18pm fred:

As long as you don't play Phish, I'm fine with it
  2:18pm Rickwaukee:

How many millions of homes at Christmas have been filled with the sounds of a plastic bass fish singing Take Me to the River?
Avatar 2:20pm Mayuko:

Hi Doctorjazz! Merry Christmas to you too, P-90!

@Rickwaukee @1:40 "security blanket" is a good way of explaining this! I do feel like keeping an emperor was like having that to tuck many Japanese people in. Sounds especially funny if I think about the fact that maternal logic being dominant in the Japanese culture.

I personally prefer the path Germans took - to make a clear break from the past - but I think it's interesting how different people react differently, and some people don't seem to be capable of handling some difficult history.
Avatar 2:21pm Mayuko:

Thanks for posting the link rbrt!
Avatar 2:22pm Mayuko:

@northguineahills yes he's a well-known "ichthyologist"! I saw it in the dictionary but I decided not to use that term cos I had zero confidence in pronouncing that word haha.
Avatar 2:23pm Mayuko:

BTW Is my mic volume too small again?
  2:24pm rbrt:

sounded ok to me
Avatar 2:24pm Mayuko:

Good! thanks.
  2:25pm rbrt:

you're welcome! :D
Avatar 2:27pm northguineahills:

Bonus Mayuko is the best Mayuko (ok, any Mayuko is the best Mayuko!)

Banks Bailey, new to me and clicky starred!
  2:27pm Rickwaukee:

@Mayuko Some descendants have a harder time giving up their cultural "pride" than the actual do-bads - they don't have any direct personal actions to feel guilty about, so they shrug and say, No big deal, I'm just keeping MY history alive. When they should be running as fast as they can from it - like the Germans.
  2:28pm P-90:

Mic volume was fine in the break
  2:29pm rbrt:

I love those field recordings
Avatar 2:31pm northguineahills:

Oddly enough, it was through MacArthur's initiative that help convince others in the State Dept to convince Truman to exonerate and keep the emperor, as a means of unification and keep the Japanese anti-communist. Considering how utterly destroyed Japan was, and the post-war trauma they endured, I believe it was probably the right move in the short term. Otherwise, MacArthur was a blowhard dick, but hey, even dicks can make the right considered decision.
Avatar 2:31pm northguineahills:

Now I'm hungry for tako.
Avatar 2:31pm fred:

@Rickwaukee: Do you think Germans gave up their cultural pride? I have German bosses, and if they did I didn't notice
Avatar 2:34pm Mayuko:

Thanks P-90 too!
  2:35pm rbrt:

I'm more impresssed with the fact that Akihito discovered new fish than the fact he is emperor lol
Avatar 2:36pm northguineahills:

me too, rbrt.
Avatar 2:36pm northguineahills:

Time to make some dim sum!
  2:36pm Rickwaukee:

@fred Was referring to acceptance of, if not actual pride in, the icky bad behavior of their elders - rather than making a clean break from it. Germans don't even allow swastikas in WWII video games.
Avatar 2:37pm Mayuko:

@rbrt haha I agree! Being born to be an emperor wasn't his choice and I don't even know if he likes it, whereas we know he LOVES fish.
Avatar 2:37pm fred:

Did he actually discover new fish? Species are often named after people who had nothing to do with the actual discovery
  2:38pm rbrt:

@Mayuko yeah!
  2:38pm rbrt:

oh good point fred hrmmm
  2:39pm rbrt:

and he is the emperor....do you think there is some poor scientist somewhere who gave up his fish discovery
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm tmoyo:

yeah, i feel sorry for the royal family.. its like being in captivity.
@fred: like Brian May's meteor or what was it??
  2:40pm Rickwaukee:

Emperor's fave movie. https://youtu.be/1Uvt83YWWWY?t=7s
Avatar 2:41pm Mayuko:

@northguineahills ah you're right! the decision was probably mainly part of the cold war thing.
  2:42pm rbrt:

now I'm bummed if he stole someone's fish discovery lol
Avatar 2:43pm fred:

@rbrt: naming a species can be an homage. I think there's a spider species named after Bowie, and a bacteria named after Zappa. I'm pretty sure no scientist had to give up anything for that
Avatar 2:45pm Mayuko:

@fred hmm, that's actually a good question! I just automatically assumed he discovered it since it was named after him!
  2:47pm Rickwaukee:

brb, sudden urge

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm listener james from westwood:

Mmm, glad to have both Stetson and Lattimore in this set.
Avatar 2:49pm fred:

I think naming a species you discovered after your own name would be considered bad form. I don't think it would fly. But emperors probably go by different rules
  2:50pm rbrt:

fred yeah I think you're prob right
Avatar 2:50pm fred:

I so want to see Mary Lattimore someday
  2:51pm rbrt:

humans make things so complicated lol, I'm just gonna enjoy the fishys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm coelacanth∅:

there are many animal and plant species named after the person who "discovered" them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm listener james from westwood:

Thought experiment: What do you thinks the animals call us? Do you think they had a meeting and arrived at a consensus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 2:55pm fred:

@coel: my first guess too. It has to be an insult anyway
